Force Unleashed - No multiplayer for PS3/360
Friday, May 16th, 2008 - 3:07pm
So we have an announcement coming from the latest Star Wars game today. There will be no multiplayer included in the PS3 or 360 versions of the game.
Why? Well, they put it in the Wii, PSP, and DS versions, so buy those too. I really like how they've simply said it's not there because we are running out of time and took it out.
This is the kind of thing that will cause me to rent rather than buy. I've been looking forward to the game and some of the multiplayer, while not entirely revolutionary, seemed like it could be fun.

Well, the handheld versions for this sort of thing are generally entirely separate games on separate codebases. The Wii version only has same-console duel. I suppose you could be cranky that you can't have lightsaber duels in the 360 version, but my guess is that it's more of a wii gimmick thrown in than a missing 360 feature.
The game's so heavy on the crazy physics effects that I don't really fault them for leaving out multiplayer.

This is the kind of game I bought the Wii for. I've been disappointed so far that it's gotten so little usage, but I've continued to plan on getting the Wii version.
Hell, why wouldn't you go for the waggle this time?

Wait, a Wii version has multiplayer, but the 360/PS3 doesn't?
What sort of parallel universe have I fallen into?

Looking at this title, I would have expected it to not be multiplayer.

Bah. Keep it then.

Apparently the Wii "multiplayer" is only Duel Mode, which is 1v1 same console only. The PSP and DS version have 4 player WiFi multiplayer, but I believe those games are rather different than the PS3/360/Wii ones.
It didn't sound like a big multiplayer game to me. I enjoyed Oblivion and Bioshock and Resident Evil 4 without multiplayer, so it will all come down to how good the single-player game is.
I'm in the crowd that didn't expect multiplayer anyway.
I'm still a little ticked off that there won't be a PC version, but I'm going to have to at least rent it for the Wii.

I thought the same thing Funkenpants. I had no big hope of it ever being a multiplayer game to begin with, so no big let down. However, I am really looking forward to a Star Wars Battlefront III over Xbox Live, when and if that is ever a reality. This game on the other hand doesn't sound like much more than a mediocre fighting game in the multiplayer department, even if you get to waggle a wiimote and pretend it's a lightsaber.

I think we'll be seeing fewer and fewer titles that are below the CoD/Halo budget level that feature both MP and SP. It's just a huge money and time sink when your main focus is SP to invest in an MP, when anything less then best-in-breed typically fails to gain any traction on live. I bet we'll be seeing more titles begin to choose co-op as an MP option, though, rather then a traditional adversarial multiplayer.

I'm just worried with the insane amount of hype this game has gotten, I won't have any option but to be disappointed when it comes out.
Most non-multiplayer games do.

Where have you been? PS2, PS3, PSP, 360, Wii, and DS only. No PC version for this.

Don't care. I'll buy it if it's cool. I'm not into this "no mutli, no buy!" attitude. I already have CoD4, GTA4, Gears of War and TF2. I'd much rather a superior single player experience. My multiplayer jones is already fixed.

I wasn't expecting multiplayer so I'm fine with it. I've always considered multiplayer a bonus, not a requirement.

I was kind of hoping that we'd get mulitplayer like we had in Jedi Academy, but oh well.

That's what I was really hoping for too since another game in the Jedi Knight/Academy series seems unlikely at this point.

I guess this means someone needs to organize a Jedi Academy retro night.

I didn't even know there was supposed to be multiplayer until now. I couldn't see them doing anything revolutionary with it anyway. I'm still very interested in the single player. I think too many games try to tack on multiplayer so they can say they have it, only to have it never utilized anyway (see The Darkness.)

I'd be up for that. But would it be Jedi Academy or Jedi Outcast? I'd need to know which one to reinstall.

Jedi Outcast. Oh my Lord, did I play the hell out of that game.
JA ruined the multiplayer saber combat. Superior single, FAR inferior multi. I played no-force saber-only 1v1 duels to the exclusion of any other gametype, and any other game, for the better part of a year. I placed third in an international tourney.
Probably the only game I've ever been genuinely really good at.

Technically I can understand why, but what a shame, I was looking forward to getting online and sharing!!

The main reason I was disappointed was not that the game simply will not include multi-player. I'm all for having a rich single-player experience. There's no better example of this than Bioshock. The problem here is that the MP had already been created, the dev time was put in, and then scrapped so they could push it out the door quicker. Not to mention, this is a game simply built around, "Kicking someone's a$$ with the force." With a design mantra like that, why wouldn't you want to put in some kind of MP.
I'm sure it wouldn't have been revolutionary, but I was looking forward to throwing people off cliffs with my awesome physics based force powers. I'll play the game, as it still looks great. But having things removed from the overall package simply makes me a little sad.

Boom Blox used Havok so I'm not sure that the Wii can't do realistic physics. I'm sure the graphics won't be close to the 360 or PS3 but no one expects that and it may leave room for them to get a good physics engine working.
Oh, I agree that Wii can do physics but what they've been planning for FU (...hee hee... FU...) is closer to CellFactor than Half-Life 2. Materials that break dynamically based on physical structure rather than pre-programmed break points, splintering wood, that kind of stuff. There's a neat trailer about it floating out somewhere where they throw R2D2 at a plank. Now, maybe it's possible they could do that on the Wii if they optimized the hell out of their code. I mean, Havoc is one fine piece of programming. From my understanding they aren't really even trying and they've simply cut that feature. I can't say I really blame them... it must be hard developing 5 games simultaneously.

I remember watching a video interview a while back in which they said that the next-gen versions of this game will use three seperate physics engines working in concert to create the effects they wanted. A feature-limited version of Havok does indeed run on Wii but it could never handle what they're doing with the 360 and PS3 engines.

If that's true (about the three physics engines) then I would agree the Wii wouldn't have a chance.
