I need some Civ tourney competition!
I'm a regular participant in the Apolyton Civilization Beyond the Sword Tri-League Tournament. This event is a monthly exercise in, for lack of a better term, "duplicate" Civilization. Roughly twice a month the organizers come up with a map, and players download the map, play through it and submit their final save game. The tourney is on the honor system with respect to no reloading and only submitting your first playthrough of the map.
The "Tri-League" name refers to the three levels of tournament competition: novice (where I play) playing at Warlord difficulty, intermediate at Prince difficulty, and advanced at Emperor. For the last couple of games, though, there haven't been many novices playing, and last round I was the only one to submit a final game! The maps are fun to play, but it isn't much fun only competing against myself.
I know there are a lot of goodjer Civ players, so if you're interested in a little friendly spare-time competition, this might be of interest to you. Especially if you're a relatively inexperienced player, I encourage you to check out the games here:

I am in. Warlord is about my level.
It may take me a few days to get up and running. Is there a particular tourney number with which you want to start (the next one posted or the most recent one posted)?
Anybody else?

Well, if you start with game 15, you have about 10 days to finish the game. Depending on how much free time you have, that may be doable. Game 16 was just posted, so it's got a full month left: June 15th is the deadline for that game.

That's interesting. Are they custom maps or just a duplicate of a random one? If custom, are they gimmicky?

I think they start with a random map and then playtest it to make sure it makes for an interesting game. The challenge usually comes from the type/size of map, the leaders you are up against, and the allowed victory conditions. The maps tend to have a theme, but it's nothing too silly. For example, in one game we were up against all the female leaders. In another we were up against all the warlike leaders. One map used a "terran" map generator and put Inca (the player) and Maya on one continent with several european leaders and Zulu on the other continent. Most of the games just have interesting map settings that I'd never tried, like Boreal (where most of your food comes from deer), island and archipelago maps, low sea levels and things like that.

oooh, this looks fun. Thanks for starting this thread, Badken! I'm decent at Warlord and not quite up to the challenge of Noble yet, so I'm probably roughly in the right bracket for competing with you.
Looks fun. Don't have beyond the sword though.

Seems intriguing, count me in too.

I downloaded and started an advanced game last night. It's fun. I definitely paid more attention to the details than I would in a typical single player game, but not as much as in our multiplayer human games. I'm guessing my final score will be nowhere near the top scores.

I once saw that the Apolyton site had tournaments, but I didn't realize there were difficulty levels. I'll have to try it out, Warlord is about my skill level.
Are these the same games as the ones on CivFanatic? Well, similar in any case. I was so happy to find them because, while I can in no way compete with some of those players, it does make the game more interesting. It's easy for me to play the same map type/rules/rulers over and over, which was getting stale. Even if you don't want to compete (at all or seriously) it is a good way to freshen the game up a bit.
*I checked, they're different. The CivFanatics game of the month comp requires you to install a mod, I guess to ensure fair play. It's rather innocuous- I don't think it's changed gameplay at all. Anyway, goodie! Two games!
You should. If you have Civ4, you should have BtS.

I bought the gold edition two weeks before BTS came out and so far its just been my single player fun, although I haven't played for a month or so.

Count me in. I love Civ4 but have been playing FfH. This'll get back into vanilla. My GF always gives me a hard time for my competitive streak. I guess she's right!
I'll have to register and stuff and have a busy weekend, so I'll start with game 16 at warlord level.

I am busy too. I will start with Game 16.
Thanks! Let's get a good turn out.
Fun, fun, fun!

Sounds interesting!

Geez, game 16 is kicking me in the nuts, hard. Yeah, Warlord's still plenty challenging.
Alright, I think I'll try it out on Prince level.

I've decided to "warm up" using game 15. I'll submit my save later this week. Pretty tough - a cultural or political victory where all the AI civs I've met so far are cultural or spiritual !
Vassalize them all for the diplomatic victory.

I threw my hat in the Novice ring too. Do we just download the latest game and go to town?
