X360 UPNP
So when I test my XBox connection it tells me the NAT is set to strict, which might be why I'm having trouble connecting to some people. I opened all the required ports (88, 3074, 3075) but that didn't fix the problem. The internets says that I can fix it by "turning on UPnP," and while there's a UPnP tab in my router settings, I've been unable to find just WTF "turning it on" entails. There's no radio button for Enable or anything like that, it's just a bunch of fields asking for external port, TDP, UDP, internal port, and IP. I took a wild guess and made three entries, one for 3074 on both TDP and UDP and one for 88 on UDP, with those numbers as the internal and external ports, and my router as the IP address. No dice. Any suggestions? Is it going the other direction? Should I use the XBox's IP address? Also, what's this I hear about needing to turn off DHCP in order to do this?

What hobo router you using? I love my wrtgl I am using 3rd party firmware and upnp works like a charm.

It's a Linksys BEFSR41 V3 router (firmware 1.05) and the modem is a Motorola 2210-02 (DSL modem).

You may want to check your modem for Gaming/NAT configs. My modem has a preset for Xbox Live already preinstalled.

Searching for "Linksys BEFSR41 UPnP" yields some people complaining about connectivity problems with that router and UPnP. I had a Linksys router whose UPnP implementation was garbage. That's why I made that bastard run real firmware: DD-WRT.

That was a great router, Lobster, five years ago. Ran Linux. Good stuff. But that's kernel 2.2-era, and I don't think it was ever updated. If you have the most recent firmware, and it's not working, buy a WRT54GL (note the L!) and use that, optionally with third-party firmware. If you don't want the wireless, the third-party firmware has the ability to simply turn the radio off, so it ends up being more or less like your BEFS unit... same number of ports and everything.
Note: most current Linksys products are total sh*t. Don't buy anything else they make. But the 54GL is pretty good. Don't get the G or GS, get the GL. You'll probably have to buy it online.
Another option would be the DLink DGL-4300, which the GWJ crowd likes a lot.

Just received my new router yesterday. As per the recommendations, I grabbed the WRT54GL. I was going to throw DD-WRT firmware on it, but some guys at work were telling me to try Tomato instead. I have it installed and working now. Already I'm noticing a difference with transferring files and general usage/streaming working better. I've been playing with the QoS settings, and I think I've got it setup well enough. Xbox 360 network tests show everything working and open NAT. I'll try to actually jump into a game later on today to test it out.
Anyone else using Tomato, and have any tips or any cool info that I should know of?

Yay! Glad to hear things are going well.
I'm not running Tomato here, but I know a number of forum denizens are, so if there's any tips/tricks to be had, you should be getting them soon.
I've been using DD-WRT for a while, but today I saw that there's a new Tomato "experimental" release that finally adds Buffalo WHR-G125 support.
I installed it, and so far, so good. Nice and snappy. I still have DD-WRT on another router, one that's bridging a connection with my main wireless network (one of those crappy newer Linksys WRT54GS models, no Tomato support).

Those Buffalos are built kinda cheap, but are very nice units, with good range, once you replace the firmware. (it's much more involved on a Buffalo, because they try to lock you out.)
But, sadly, you can't get them anymore. Buffalo is fighting some court case, and they got an injunction against them, forcing them to take the units off the market. Real shame. I'd point people at those instead of the 54GLs if they still existed.
Yeah, I've had mine for a while. Getting DD-WRT on it was a bit of a hassle, but it was very much worth it in the end.
Going from DD-WRT to Tomato was no big deal (luckily, I caught the one "gotcha" in the FAQ before proceeding).
With custom firmware, the G125 is the best "who cares" cheap piece of crap wireless router I've ever owned. It'll keep me going until I move to newer wifi technology.

NewEgg sells the LinkSys WRT54GL, that is where I got mine.
Anyobe have a link to the 3rd party firmware for it?
Also, how do you get into your cable moden firmware to muck about? Never heard of doing that for connection issues.

Here's the link to the Tomato firmware, which I'm using.
You can get the DD-WRT firmware from here.

I've been running Tomato for a while -- haven't had any problems with it so far, and I really like the snappy AJAX-style GUI, and the realtime bandwidth usage graphs. I used to run OpenWRT (I have a WRT54GS, so I have extra RAM and flash for installing and running random stuff), which I customised with all sorts of things, to the point where I ran my irssi on it in a screen session for all my IRCing, but I eventually realised that apart from the geek cred of having an IRC version reply that said I was on a MIPS CPU, it was all fairly pointless

After a few days with Tomato, I must say that I approve.
However, important note: when using QoS, don't take the L7 filter's word for it.
The L7 filter has an entry for Team Fortress 2. However, I found that it only applied to SOME of TF2's traffic, while the rest was falling under my "Bulk traffic" rule. With my wife sending big attachments on Gmail, my ping skyrocketed. Made a custom entry to cover the 27000-27050 port range, and that caught all TF2 (and other Source engine game) traffic.
The QoS "View Details" section shows what connections are being made on what ports, and how they're being classified by QoS. Extremely handy. Don't think I ever saw that capability in DD-WRT. That plus the traffic monitor that DD-WRT lacked make Tomato more than just a lighter DD-WRT.

I noticed that too with the Xbox Live filter. A lot of the traffic was showing as Bulk Traffic. I made a custom entry to the MAC of the 360 on all ports to fix that up.

Hey, LobMob, did you find that the router was your problem?
I have the same modem and I'm having some torrent download speed problems.
Which sucks cause I'm running way behind on BSG now.

Using DD-WRT on a Linksys 54GL, as a wireless client from another router, and I'm getting more indicators that the 360 uses voodoo as its main protocol. If I just turn the 360 on I can't connect to Live, but if I run the connection test on the 360 it then will work fine until I turn off the 360. NAT is reported as completely open now that I set the 360 in the client router's DMZ, and the client router in the first router's DMZ.
Before that I tried port forwarding similar to Lobster's above, but that always left a moderately restricted NAT according to the 360 connection test.
Is there something I'm doing that's retarded?
Danjo Olivaw Lives
Are you running NAT on both routers? It might be better if you can bridge the wireless somehow; then, the 360 would effectively be plugged straight in to the first router, with the wireless link and second router becoming transparent. Hopefully that's the kind of thing that DD-WRT can manage.
Xbox Live: pneuman | my tech/games/rant blag
Well, he says "as a wireless client", which implies client-mode bridging... which is no NAT at the second AP.
I've struggled a bit at times getting my 360 to bridge properly through my Squeezebox. What I've found is that I have to turn on the 360 and powercycle the Squeezebox. That seems to get the connection working essentially every time. It's kind of a pain, but it does work.
