Microsoft Game Studios 2008 lineup
Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 - 1:46pm
MGS has a page up here detailing their 2008 publishing lineup. The list is as follows (taken from EvilAvatar):
EvilAvatar wrote:
Ninja Gaiden II - June 3rd, 2008
Too Human - August 19th, 2008 (August 29th in Europe)
Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise - September
Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - November
Gears of War 2 - Holiday 2008
Fable 2 - Holiday 2008XBLA
Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One - May 21st, 2008.
I'm really pleased to see a new Viva Pinata game on the list. The first one was a diamond in the rough, and a more-polished version with collaborative multiplayer could be a huge hit in our house.
Any other unexpected surprises or glaring omissions?

There's a trailer for Two Human's coop gameplay on Gametrailers that had me salivating. I'm not a big fan of the "juggling" mechanic in games like DMC but overall, it looks like a great Diablo-clone.
Gears looks exactly what I would expect for a Gears sequel, which makes it a day one purchase for me.
And even thought I think its a bit over priced, the Penny Arcade game looks like it could be a lot of fun and inventive.
I'm surprised that Halo Wars didn't make an appearance at all. Also I'm extremely disappointed that Alan Wake didn't either. I keep hoping for some new info on it but its in a perpetual blackout. And I was hoping to see some promotion of upcoming DLC content plans for Halo3, GTA4, and Mass Effect but that was a bust as well.
So, 2008 looks good for MGS. Maybe not the slam dunk that 2007 was, but all in all, pretty solid.

Same here. The first didn't sell well, so I was expecting that Microsoft might end up dumping the franchise, so I'm glad to hear that it will live on.
Talk about a dry summer, though. It's starting to look like Metal Gear in June for me, and then nothing until August. Well, a chance to catch up on the backlog I suppose.

Decent list, but there is no way in hell that Rare gets two games out in the same year.
Stranger things have happened.
Also, the new Banjo Kazooie sounds fantastic.

Finally, Too Human release date!

So they are porting gamecube games still?
It really is looking very good (though a tiny voice in the back of my mind keeps whispering lies about Hellgate looking great before its release as well). There's also a nicely detailed interview with Denis Dyack up at EvilAv today.
I was surprised by that as well. The fact that there's been little or no word on Alan Wake in quite some time, and it doesn't appear to be on its way to stores this year, gives fresh life to the "quietly canceled/troubled development" rumors that periodically swirl about.
I'm really torn on Banjo-Kazooie 3. I really, really wanted an experience closer to the first title rather than the second, and we're getting something completely unlike either.
However, if it weren't for the "Banjo-Kazooie" name, I think I'd be completely gonzo for this. It's just like Viva Pinata: a game that's wildly inventive and, if it's what they say it is, will end up being another high water mark for gaming. Viva Pinata and Banjo-Kazooie 3 may mark the return of what originally made Rare so great: truly inventive games.
Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie were N64 games, actually. And part 3 looks like it's going to be completely unlike part one and two. Which is actually a disappointment to me initially, but hopefully will turn out to be a very smart move.
They can't really afford dropping titles like VP. Or Scene It, while we're at it. Microsoft has nothing else that would cover those bases, and the variety of the software portfolio, mainly targetted at hardcore players, is already quite poor at this point - one of the reasons why the system is struggling in Europe.
I feel the same way. On the one hand, they decided against creating a great platformer (a truly rare genre); on the other hand, they seem to be creating a great something.

I bought Viva Pinata on day one.
It was most definitely not the kind of game I usually buy, but it seemed really interesting and innovative.
I enjoyed some aspects of it a lot, but in the end, I felt like it was lacking direction and purpose.
I think I was hoping it would be something more like Dungeon Keeper or Overlord, where mostly autonomous AI creatures interact in interesting ways while the player handles macro-scale aspects of administration. (In Diablo 2, I reflexively gravitate towards a skeleton casting necro, nothing else is really that much fun for me.)
But then, my wife spent over a solid month obsessively building gardens full of different pinatas.
I'll probably buy VP2 as well.
Banjo Kazooie looks pretty interesting too. I have no interest in the characters, I have no history with the franchise, I'm kind of embarrassed by the title, and my experience with platformers is mostly limited to Psychonauts and Kameo, but the vehicle building aspect of the game sounds neat.
Is there a list like this for the PS3?

Remember, this isn't the entirety of the Xbox 360 lineup, just the stuff published by MGS. Going by IGN's release dates, here's what Sony Computer Entertainment's publishing lineup looks like:
May 20: SingStar
June: WipeOut HD
September: SOCOM: Confrontation
October: LittleBigPlanet
October: The Agency
October: MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
"Q3": Free Realms
"Q3": PlayStation Home
TBA: InFamous
Also a bunch more "TBA 2008", many of which probably won't actually make 2008. Who knows if InFamous will either?

I too bought Viva Pinata on day 1. And out of all the games that have come and gone in my collection that's the only game (besides All Pro Football 2k8) that has never left my collection, even to loan to a friend. I love that game and go back to it frequently. I couldn't be more pleased to hear there is going to be a sequel. I now have roughly 4 months to get 1000/1000.
That will be the first game ever where I actually try to get all the achievements.

Sucks that Too Human lost 4 player coop. At least theres still 2 player, but 4 would've been really sweet.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

The video of Banjo is pretty damn awesome. It looks like you construct your own vehicles out of lego like parts to get around. I approve.
Danjo Olivaw Lives
It's the only game I have all the achievements for.
I played that sucker obsessively, and while I haven't popped it in lately, I still love it and it's never leaving my collection. Ever. It's amazingly close to a perfect game, if there were such a thing.
Yeah, that's what sounds so awesome about it. From Kieron Gillen's preview, linked above:

It looks like THQ is porting it but Viva Pinata DS should also be out this Holiday season.
Xbox Gamertag: Armchair Jockey
Viva Pinata DS is being developed by Rare, done by the same team that did Diddy Kong Racing for DS - it's just THQ to publish the game. (Microsoft didn't publish DKR either.)
Thats good news. Its one of the few games that my girlfriend will actually play on her own. If I can get her to not lock down the TV while she's playing, all the better.
