Ottawa S&T - NEW VENUE NEEDED - Tentatively for Friday, June the 13th

So I was talking to Stylez and we were discussing how ridiculous it is that with all the Ottawa Goodjers on here, we've never had a slap & tickle yet. We're also about to launch our new on-site computer service business and we thought hey, what a perfect opportunity to meet our fellow Goodjers and toast the start of our new bounding into the void of entrepreneurship. So I'm throwing this idea out to the Ottawa crew to see who's up for it.

I think this would be a great opportunity for a long overdue Ottawa Goodjer meet-up and we'd love to celebrate the launch of our company and our new lives with our forum friends. Hopefully everyone's cool with taking home a stack of flyers too. I was thinking of doing it in about two week's time but we'd like to gauge reaction to the idea first.

What do you guys think of this idea? If any alternatives are desired, feel free to toss them out.

Just say when. I haven't been to The Works in waaay too long.

Is it likely to be a family-friendly affair (ie, wife and 1-year-old son)? I'm easy either way, but it would be nice to know beforehand.

Feel free to bring your wife if you want but I'm not sure how friendly it would be to young kids, mostly just because of the noise (Works Westboro in particular is very loud) and because there will likely be some alcohol consumption and related antics.

I meant to mention too, if any of our Montreal friends feel like making the short road trip up to hang out for the night, that'd be awesome too. Anyone who can make it is more than welcome! If anyone who wants to come doesn't have a car as well, Stylez and I can probably provide some transportation as well.

That's like 5 minutes from my house. Unfortunately, I am pretty introverted so this idea sounds a little scary. Maybe if I bring someone I will come, I will see what other people think. Age bracket?

I'm definitely there. I most certainly hope I can bring a friend or two, depending if their wives let them out of the house. Any dates in mind? My summer is relatively hectic so it would be nice to see what you're thinking. Last weekend of May or first two weekends of june would be ideal.
Also looking forward to trying out my GH skills at some Rock Band, since I've never played.
Between food and drinks I can almost certainly commit to a minimum of 50$ spent myself alone, possibly more depending on how long we stay.

It's going to be pretty varied but I think we're all good people so I wouldn't worry. We're going to try to have Rock Band there so we'll all have something in common. People may be able to bring more than one person with them, it'll depend on the response we get. Stylez and I will have a couple of "VIP" guests of the company's we'll be inviting as well but nothing huge.

If we get enough interest, I was thinking of setting things up for two weeks from now or so which would fit in your time frame nicely. It will depend on when I can book the room but since I've done POS work for the chain management at The Works, it shouldn't be too hard. I think if some peopel want to bring an extra friend, it should be OK. I think this room has capacity for at LEAST 30.

In terms of spending, an average full meal at The Works with appetizers and a couple of beers of one of their kick-ass milkshakes will usually cost around $30-$40 a person. Obviously, if you want more drinks, it will go up from there. With 15 or more people, I think we'll be covered fine. Anyone else in?

So Certis, as per our discussion on GTA4 earlier tonight, I found a return flight on seat sale with WestJet. Winnipeg to Ottawa for $144. I know it isn't $50 each way but that's pretty damn good. Start lobbying guys, we can get him here!

WE GOT OUR FUNDING!!!

Sorry about that but it's been a very good day. Stylez and I got confirmation that our $15,000 startup loan will be in the bank account tomrorow. That means that in approximately two weeks, we can open Digital Lifeline for business! I've never been so happy to be in debt up to my ass! So, that said I'm thinking of trying to book Works Westboro for either Friday the 30th or Saturday the 31st of this month. What does everyone think about that?

I notice there's also a couple of Ottawa Goodjers (Kuddles and I think there's another couple) that haven't chimed in yet. Are you guys interested in joining us? We'd love to have as many Goodjers as we can cram in the room. I'm going to check into capacity for the room but depending on the response from here, we can probably open the door for those who are coming to being more than one guest.

Let me know what you guys think about the date. Let's do this!

Grats on the funding! Good time to be taking a loan, with interest rates going the way there are.

Either the 30th or the 31st works great for me. My friend Gradskull (who has posted once or twice but mostly lurks) will be joining, maybe one or two others.
Send Kuddles a PM - he may just be avoiding Everything Else.

I also think Certis should come. If he does, I promise to write one e-mail a week illustrating how his points of view are clearly superior.
I'll also buy him a beer or two to offset planefare.

As for age bracket - I'm 23 tOW so we can both be "the kids" together.

Man, I ran a quote for you on WestJet and it's basically double the fare I found for Certis. Kind of nuts how big a price jump one extra province makes. You're certainly welcome though if you want to front the fare or spend a few days driving here.

Ahh shaddup. It's not like I'm rabbit or anything! I keed I keed.

Curious too that Certis has chimed in on the thread since I posted that very reasonably priced air fare. I think he may be trying to avoid having to say no and looking incredibly cheap.

Sorry to put in a bumping post of sorts but I just want to make sure that some of the Ottawa Goodjers who don't maybe come by as often get a chance to see this.

I'm going to contact The Works tomorrow and see about getting Saturday the 31st for this with Friday the 30th as a backup. We don't have too many Goodjers responded yet (I'm going to PM kuddles but if there's anyone else, let me know and I'll PM them too) so if we don't get a massive influx of new interest, it'll be cool if those coming want to bring a few people with them. Stylez and I will have some friends and VIP customers there too but I don't think we'll come close to capacity on the room. I'm telling ya' t0w, you should definitely come.

Hey guys. I got a response back from The Works and we've got a couple of options:

1. If we want next weekend, we can have the room between 2pm and 5pm on either Friday or Saturday. The evening shift in the room (6pm to midnight) is booked for next weekend.
2. If we want the evening shift, we can do it the following Friday, June 6th.

They need a response pretty quick so I'd like to know what works better for people here. Please let me know what you guys prefer and we can go from there. For me personally, I don't mind going for the afternoon.

Also, another thing that's a little annoying is that everyone in the room that night has to be on one bill. I'm going to see if I can get them to make an exception because they know me but if not, I can use a credit card and we'd have to keep track of what people buy there and everyone will have to make sure they have enough cash to cover their own stuff. Not terribly convenient I know but it's one of their conditions.

I just need a few people to chime in with whether they're cool having the event in the afternoon. If enough are good with that, we'll do it then. Otherwise, we can push it a week to get the evening. What say you all?

Alright, I've asked them to book us for the evening on June 6th so I should get an e-mail soon letting us know if the slot is still open. I also asked if there was any way they could make an exception for me with regards to splitting up the bills since I work for their POS provider. No promises but I'll try to work my unending charms on them. Maybe I'll offer the managers free service calls or something.
