Xbox 360 HDMI to DVI

I'm trying to hook my 360 up to my 19" LCD monitor (a cheap Proview off-brand thing) so I can play games while my girlfriend watches TV, but before shelling out for a VGA cable I figured I'd try the HDMI-to-DVI route. I plugged a HDMI-DVI adapter in to the 360, ran a DVI-DVI cable from that in to my monitor, fired everything up, and... nothing. The 360 doesn't even look like it's booting -- it just sits there, and the controller keeps flashing all four lights of its ring of light at me. I know the monitor and DVI cable are fine, though, since I use them on my PC, and I also tested the adapter successfully the other way around, taking DVI from my laptop and outputting it to the HDMI port on my HDTV.

Everything I've read online suggests that this should work, though there's also the odd report of it not working for some people. Have any of you tried it, and if so, did it work for you?

I don't know if it's a requirement for HDMI usage, but perhaps it isn't working because your monitor doesn't support HDCP?

Can't really help you with this problem but if you can't get it resolved, I do recommend getting your VGA cable off of E-bay - sure you get a Chinese knock off, but mine works great at 1/3 the price.

I'm not sure about the 360, so I doubt this will be of much help, but when I used the same setup for my PS3, it took forever to actually display a picture on the screen after boot up. It would get there eventually.

If I tried to change channels on the TV after turning off the PS3, it would usually ignore me for a while as well.

Have you tried setting the resolution down to bog standard using another type of connection, and then changing back to HDMI/DVI and optimising it from there?

I had a problem specific to an HDMI-DVI adapter with my own TV, but it was with a computer and not the 360.

It was solved in my case by a $2 HDMI-DVI cable from monoprice. As soon as I took the adapter out of the mix it worked great. No guarantees it'd work for you obviously, but it was suggested to me as a cheap potential fix and it worked.

Dunno if I just had a bad adapter or if there's something else going on there.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I looked in to HDCP, but apparently it shouldn't be an issue for games and the dashboard (just protected video content), and I did try a few other resolutions as well, but to no avail. I think I'll just cave and get a cheap VGA cable from eBay -- they're super-cheap (about $10 shipped, compared to $50 for an official cable at retail), and if they do the job, then that's awesome.
