AoC: Building a Guild City

I noticed that we got a brief overview from FunCom's Newsletter today. A few things I found interesting:

* The guild leader needs to be level 40+ and we need 24+ members. That doesn't seem all that unreasonable.

* We get to choose the location of our city - three options, one from each of the nations.

* You need to hit tier 3 with your Guild City to attempt to take Battlekeeps. It will be interesting to see what kind of resources and effort it will take to do this. It will also be interesting to find out if you can assist in taking a battlekeep if your guild isn't at the third tier level.

* There are a number of buildings you create for your city that grant benefits to the guild's membership. This is a very cool feature and some thought should go into how this will be handled when the time comes.

The Guild City aspect of AoC is highly appealing to me. I know there's been a lot of talk about how the game will appeal strongly to the solo-PvPer who likes to live dangerously, but I hope we can rally up enough support to make a serious effort to unlocking some of the bigger picture stuff as a team. For that, I am certain, we'll need a more unified effort and focus.

It sounds like a really cool idea, and it definitely bolsters the idea of "for the guild" instead of "for myself" which can tend to happen in other games.

So how is this handled though, all instanced, right? I know the Battlekeeps are attackable, but is that also handled through an instance?

I do like how the guild can hang out there and craft, etc. The screen shots do look a bit drab though, nothing inspiring at all. I hope you can at least have it look different from other keeps

Yeah, you know, I had the same sort of reaction when I saw the individual buildings. I suppose they are trying to maintain the "period look" of Conan. Dirty, real, rough around the edges. Not overly inspiring, though is it.

That said, it's a fabulous idea. Having guilds that are more than a channel and label beneath your character's name is very cool. A place to make plans, work on trade skills, gather for events, and hang out all sounds great to me. Toss in the benefits to members for said buildings... woot!

But, yeah, I hope we can get at least a faction of the guild that's willing to taking on this project and see what we can accomplish as a collective.

Not sure where this talk is coming from, but if you dont have and work with a guild you might as well not play the game. You'll be stunted the entire way. From the start they talked about how guild centric this game would be.

Swat... everything is instanced. In your guild info screen there will be a button that will transport you to the guild city instance.

You can also choose 4 different styles for your city, and once they're up and populated with the different buildings...They're impressive to look at.

That's very cool.

Actually, Ran, in a couple of other threads, I asked about cooperative play, groups, instancing, and the like, and had at least a few people say it was more about waiting in the shadows, avoiding trouble or starting trouble. Gave me the impression that PvP was more about PvP than leveling or progression.

Again, the reason I say I am still on the fence about this all is because I want the challenge of PvP, but I don't want it to come at the price of progression, grouping, and being able to play when I want to play.

Well if i was one of the ones giving that impression i'm sorry, because that's not what i meant. Now on pvp server you will be waiting in shadows, and all the above. You'll have to, to survive, but only to wait for the rest of your group/raid/guild mates.

Personally at the start i suspect a good portion of the population will leave other groups/raids alone when going against end game content unless provoked. You'll still have assholes trying to start stuff but they'll be the minority. Everyone will be rushing to get through the content as quick as they can so they can have an advantage over the people coming in later.

Yeah, that's certainly the hope.

During the week, my wife and I have some windows of play that range at around 4am-6am (Pacific) and some spot play between 4:30pm and 7pm. Generally, I have some extra time to play in the late evenings, too.

I'd like to think that we'll be able use that time to help with progression and guild building, etc. Both of us are very goal oriented and the Guild City feature sounds like it's worth pursuing.

Regardless, probably going to go where the majority of our friends here go as that will be where the fun is at.

I think it will compare to the launch of Burning Crusade. Sure, there were a few skirmishes here and there, but for the most part everyone was big eyed and couldn't wait to level. Now, when everything settled and everyone was max level, that was an entirely different story.

As it should be. I know i get excited and i'm not trying to recruit people to one side or the other. Just trying (poorly it seems) to clear up misconceptions

Well, I'll tell you that i'm more interested in the city part than the day-to-day pvp. Thats just me...i'm one of those folks that played stronghold and castle and such - love the city option, so you know you can count me in Shade.

Very excited...

Unless you're running out of mana overhealing is the most worthless stat in the game. Underhealing is effectively known as "wiping".

so sayeth the Bear...

Coffee Grinder

from the pvp i have played so far, it seems pretty tamed, there are a few people now that hide and wait. I probably am going to a pve server cause i want to work on my character and the guild stuff. Plus i like the pvp being instanced. just annoying if u are soloing something and some group comes from hiding and kills you.
