I played SWG from launch up to the speeder patch. The game has been plagued by nerfs, counter nerfs, lack of QA in patches, bad design, and finally, to cap it all off the NGE, which is widely hailed as the worst idea in the history of gaming.
So, given all that, while this may be a cool thing, I have a real, real hard time getting behind SWG in any way, shape or form these days. Could it be awesome? Certainly, but given that, the game itself could have been awesome. They just don't have a track record of pulling that off.

Completely untrue. Granted the NGE was a kick in the nuts that doesn't mean people don't learn from their mistakes. With you being gone for so long you've not seen the updates they've been pushing out for the past 2 years and they're top notch compared to what came before. The game as it stands now is actually fun to play if you forget about pre-NGE.

My big issue is this game is running on very old hardware now. I have recently played it and found that graphically it's dated and often times the outdated servers had issues with even 15+ players being in the same area. It basically has the same effect if 200+ players were pvping in the same area in WoW.
Their content releases are definitely bringing the game back from the brink of destruction, but unless they get some good hardware going and find some way to move their users from ghost servers to more populated ones I don't think they are going to get the type of numbers they want for a userbase.

The game Pre-NGE is what made it fun; I enjoyed the sandbox aspect of the game more than anything. So, if NGE is what makes the game suck, then it's hard to forget that.
I really, really liked SWG in it's original incarnation. When I first heard about the game going into development, and the vision they had for it, my first thoughts were that they were bringing the pen & paper RPG to the computer, and that's exactly what they did. It was wonderful and glorious. NGE destroyed that sandbox, and short of getting rid of the NGE, there isn't anything they can do to bring back the times that it was fun. Advance the timeline, add great content, but it's still missing that key element to me.
On a side note, I've found that sandbox environment anyway. EvE is even more diverse, but still manages to hit a lot of the key notes that I miss from original SWG.
