Metal Gear Solid 4 Catch-All (Formerly "Metal Gear Retrospective")

GameTrailers just started a metal gear retrospective.

This is pretty cool. I think the retrospectives are some of the best content on GT, and I think this will provide a good refresher course leading up to MGS4.

The first installment goes over the MSX and NES installments of the series. This is also a good way to get a summary of the story for those who never played those games.

SPOILER ALERT! The video essentially walks through the plot of each game, so there are spoilers galore. END SPOILER ALERT!

Edit:

Made it a catch all, for both the new game and the retrospective.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. The Final Fantasy and Metroid bits they did last year were excellent.

Can't forget their Zelda retrospective either. I love their theory about the connection between all the games in the series.

Awesome. Hopefully their recap of MGS 1-3 will be enough for me to go into 4 with a working understanding of the story? Maybe?

Great first episode. The retrospectives really are the best part of GT. I remember waiting in excitement for the Final Fantasy ones. I love the Metal Gear series.

Nothing will provide you with a "working understanding" of the MGS series. Playing the MGS series doesn't provide you with a "working understanding." Just prepare yourself for that, they're amazing games, but the stories are notoriously out-there. You just have to strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.

But these retrospectives should prepare you pretty well.

Recently, GT has also posted part 4 of Star Wars Retrospective, focused on the space simulators. If you're a fan of X-Wing and TIE Fighter, don't miss it.

A new video went up yesterday. Playing Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 brings back some good memories.

If you want a good retrospective, pick up the Essentials box for $30. I loved MGS1, but just picked up the box last month. A lot of gaming for $30.
I skipped 1, just played through two and three. 2 was good, but felt very similar to 1 (not a bad thing). 3 was good enough, that it kept my copy of gta4 on the shelf for a week, while I finished it... fantastic.

Welcome, Snowsquirrel.

I might look into the essentials collection, but what with MGS4 being (supposedly) the end of the series, I have no trouble at all imagining a PS3 set featuring all 4 games with various enhancements (a complete remake for the MGS4 engine would be hoping for too much.) There's already been an MGS1 remake hinted at, hasn't there?

Yeah, memories of when the minutes of gameplay used to outnumber the minutes of cutscenes.

MGS4 pre-orders were supposed to get The Metal Gear Saga: Vol.2 on DVD. Volume 1 actually does a decent job of explaining--or at least covering--the overall story in each of the 5 main games released so far.

I've been meaning to pick up the essential collection. I've played the first 2 games multiple times, but I couldn't make it through Snake Eater. I want the collection mainly for subsistence.

Part 2 is now up. This time detailing MGS1. Spoilers galore!

I got the essentials vol. 2 with my pre-order and really liked it. I was kind of wondering where vol. 1 was. Where did you pick it up, snowsquirrel?

There is a Vol. 2? I didn't know that, I need to find it!

I never actually played MGS games, but I really like the story behind the game, and I have gone through a great length to archive recordings of most of the more recent MGS games, so that I know the plot. (Anyone got recordings of earlier MGS games? Please? )

Fantastic retrospective, as usual from GT. Some of their content is marginal, but these retrospectives are great.

Surprise, surprise; there apparently are very lengthy cutscenes and Konami doesn't want you to know about them. Gee, don't you think people would have found out about them when they, I don't know, played the game and talked about it online?

Dumb enough to put them in the game but not quite dumb enough to shout it from the rooftops.

Awesome, I've always liked the concept of MG, but never get the whole plot as I don't finish games, or even play all of them, this is usefull to me.

Yeah, that'd be like JJ Abrams getting pissed about Lost spoilers only to send emails to TV reviewers telling them not to reveal who was in the coffin.

Woof. No kidding.
Eurogamer wrote:
Metal Gear Solid has always been a love it or hate it proposition. Millions love it for its involved, conspiratorial plotting, its arch sense of humour, its demanding stealth gameplay, its sprawling cinematic ambition, its preposterous stylishness and pretensions toward artistic weight. Millions hate it for exactly the same reasons.

Then there are those - this reviewer included - for whom Metal Gear Solid is a love it and hate it proposition. Flawed, intractable, unspeakably tedious at times, and yet blessed with incredible production values, imaginative design, and a brilliant, brave willingness to think and do the unexpected and impossible. At times they're barely videogames at all, but they're capable of moments of pure videogame genius, joy and shock that few other series can match.

So how do you review a new Metal Gear Solid? Do you assess it on its own terms, ones that its legion of fans will understand? Do you play the sceptic, and take Hideo Kojma and his team to task for their stubborn refusal to catch up with what the rest of the world expects of a videogame? Or do you walk the path of compromise, down the middle?

Quote:
The latest issue of EGM includes a short note on the status of its MGS4 review and why it was delayed an issue:
"Metal Gear Solid 4 will hit store shelves shortly after this issue of EGM lands in your hot little hands. And four EGM editors - Matt Leone, Jeremy Parish, Andrew Pfister, and Shane Bettenhausen - have already invested plenty of time in the game. So why don't we have a full review in this issue? Simply put: We weren't happy with the limitations Konami wanted to impose on our comments, and rather than publish compromised reviews in the interest of being the first to rate the game, we'd rather wait until next issue, where we can be completely open and thorough with our thoughts."

Bravo, good sirs.
