Canada: Humanity's Salvation
Well, they had to be good for something
:
Next year, the Canadian Space Agency will launch the Near Earth Object Surveillance Satellite (NEOSSat), the first space-borne asteroid hunting device ever made.If a comet or asteroid doesn't slam into the planet between now and then, ending civilization, it will greatly improve our chances of killing ourselves off, instead of being snuffed out by some cosmic accident. Thank you, Canucks.

To be fair, we don't like them anymore than you do and if it were made legal, I think we'd happily eliminate them for you. Though my girlfriend likes both (no idea why) so I couldn't do it without getting in trouble.
That said, would you like me to list a few of the things the US has given the world that deserves ramifications of a nuclear nature? ![]()

I know I will be in the minority when I post this view but why has it become commonly accepted practice here to take cheap potshots at my homeland at every given opportunity? There are tons of stereotypical jokes about the US that I would incur much haterade for making but it seems both acceptable and funny (I believe neither) to do so to Canada and every thread related to us always deteriorates into this. Sorry to vent like this but it really bugs the crap out of me.
And you have never told a Newfie joke, I bet.

Corrected. (That is the US spelling, isn't it?)

Hey PA, if it makes you feel better it really grates on me when people dig on American beer. Canadians love to do that and from what I've had of Canadian beer and whisky I have no idea why.

Funny you should mention it, I was just going to compare Canada to Minnesota's cooler (heh) older brother. The whole family is sort of the home-schoolers who live down the block. They might be better educated than your family, but they suck at sports and have that annoying ability to respond to insults with niceness. It's this impenetrable Lawful Good that I can't even begin to understand. Man does that piss me off! ![]()

I do get this, my problem is just that it doesn't seem a two way street. My experience has been that making fun of Canada gets you laughs, making fun of the US gets you scorn. This doesn't offend me as much as I probably let on in my initial post. I just saw a thread about a significant Canadian advancement created with the purpose of making fun of us and every response consisting of exactly that. No one cared about the breakthrough, just using it as a reason to poke us again. Something just doesn't seem right about that to me.
That's probably the flip side of my second point. On a majority-U.S.-visited website, a joke about the U.S. just won't get the traction that a Canadian joke will, just as I wouldn't expect a joke about Poles to get a laugh in Krakow.
You can't make somebody love you, but you can buy a bigger television.

It really doesn't bother me at all. Maybe if living in Canada was actually a bad thing it would rub me but well I wouldn't live in the states if you guys paid me. Wait a minute you already try that one on lots of Canadians. The breaking point I find for most people isn't even the money its the weather.
Tell me how to do it without getting caught and I'll assassinate Nickleback for anyone. ![]()

It mostly has to do with jingoistic breast beating. Sure, Canada's currency is kicking the snail snot out of ours and your health care system makes ours look medieval in comparison and you manage to provide a better quality of life for your people with far less effort than we seem to. But knowing that things can be better for us down here with a little competent leadership doesn't make us feel better about our culture of hopelessness and complacency. So instead, we drag you down.
There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.
Well said.

I think there is nothing wrong with poking a little fun here. Canadians for the most part, myself included, understand who we are and often the perception of who we are, and can see the humor in our role as the North American little brother. There is an entire branch of Canadian comedy it seems based on this lot in life. One of the main reasons that we generate so many famous comedians for hollywood, I believe, is because of this unique perspective to take part in the trappings of American life ,yet be able to step away and observe from just outside the bubble. The point is, part of being able to take pride and enjoy being Canadian is to be able to also laugh along with the jokes that go along with that. Every brother takes a punch in the shoulder or a noogy, once in a while, the trick is being able to take it, because at the right moment you will give one back.
To hazard a guess:
1. People all over the world make fun of people who live near them or with whom they're a little bit familiar. US citizens make fun of Canadians, among many others. Swedes make fun of Finns. White English-speaking South Africans make fun of white Afrikaans-speaking South Africans. Minnesotans make fun of Wisconsonites. Wordsmythe makes fun of Minnesotans.
2. The majority of Goojers are US citizens, therefore there's plenty of people who enjoy making fun of Canada.
3. It's less fun when it's your own country or state being made fun of, but it's the price of admission. Have you never made a joke about the Quebecois?
You can't make somebody love you, but you can buy a bigger television.

Naw naw, I don't make jokes about Quebec, I just bitch about how they drive. Having done hundreds of service calls in Gatineau, I've seen it first hand.
