EDIT: This thread is now about coding color schemes.
I am really, one would say, desperately interested in adopting a e-ink display device for purposes of editing C++ code. My dry eye syndrome isn't getting any easier, and CRT/LCD displays continue to be major irritants.
So far the best match for my needs I found is called iRex Iliad, because it actually has a rudimentary code editor made by the community (called Beaver Project), and because with more hacking it is possible to hook up a USB keyboard to it.
The problem is that both of those actions require one to be a Linux wizard and are not accessible to mere mortals.
Is there some other, more obvious and easy to use choice that I possibly missed ? Possibly with a larger than 8" display ? Something more suited for programming from the start ?
I sincerely doubt it, but thought I'd throw this out there before spending money on the iLiad.

I know this may sound silly, but have you already tried a dark color scheme?
I've downloaded and tried a few different ones for VS.NET 2005 and love having a black/dark gray background and lots of LOW CONTRAST code highlighting colors.
It's made a world of difference for me lately, maybe it can help you? I don't know what IDE/Editor you use, but I don't know of (m)any modern ones that don't let you change the color scheme. Black on white suuuuuuuucks for code editing and really fatigues the eyes.

Have you tried using any eyedrops?

One of the reasons I love Notepad++ is that it's pretty customizable on that end.

duckilama, thanks for the idea. I wasn't aware that there were downloadable schemes for Visual Studio (which is what I use, 2008). Changing the colors by hand seemed like a hassle since they all need to be coordinated with each other, but now I will start googling for that.
Can you point me toward a particular scheme you're using right now ?
EDIT: I found ZenVim, which is pretty neat, however I dislike that the theme doesn't affect the scrollbars and menues of Visual Studio - even in fullscreen mode, the screen is surrounded by a light border. I wonder if I can mess with my Windows colors to make them match the scheme...
Gorilla, the "removes redness !" type of drops you listed do more harm than good to people with chronic dry eye syndrome.

Okay, I combined ZenVim with an old Windows 95 skinless theme, which allowed me to create ... this !

Ye gods. I've gotten complaints about my use of pink comments in Emacs, but that green text everywhere has got to be worse.
I don't know, self! I still kinda suspect that this sucks!
I just pulled up those windows... this is what it actually looks like most of the time.

Might as well post what my setup usually looks like since it's of the dark background variety as well. After having used this for many years I can't imagine ever going back to anything with a white background, or similar. While I don't have any problems looking at those, it's just so much easier on the eyes if it's dark.
I prefer not having anything visible that I don't currently use, including menus and everything else.
(Never mind the actual code, it's just two of the standard IO modules used as examples)

I prefer that too, but making the borders dark and using "full-screen mode" is as close as I can come in Visual Studio, apparently.
Iteration 3 of the color scheme !

eInk displays pretty much suck for typing. The refresh rate is very very slow compared to a regular monitor, typing code would be horrendous.
You could use something like Windowblinds or a Uxtheme.dll hack to change your widgets and all. Here's a quick article on using the uxtheme.dll mod on Vista. Works the same on XP.
