Haze Demo on PSN

The exclusive FPS for the PS3 now has a demo available for download. It's 1.43 GBs and supports four player coop mode as well as single player. It's done by the fine folks behind the Time Splitters series.

Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles

Beat me to it, I just messaged you on PSN - Haze Demo Out! I'll be down for some multi once it's done, if you or anyone else wants to mess around with the co-op. This one's completely off my radar so I hope I'm pleasantly surprised. I used to love me some Timesplitters back in the day.

I really dug Timesplitters, but the PAX co-op demo last summer was very disappointing in terms of level design, art style, and graphics. I'll be interested to see whether the demo is an improvement.

I'm downloading it now, I'd like to try the co-op out sometime this weekend.

I tried the single player demo. On one hand, this feels like typical FPS fare. On the other, there were flashes of what they're going to convey with the story and I find that element pretty compelling. Seems like a solid renter.

Anyone want to give co-op a quick go tomorrow night? Maybe the game really opens up and shines with co-op. Anything could happen...

I was a little unimpressed. It seemed to be a very solid Halo clone with some catches, but it didn't grab me in the first 10 minutes of playing. It definitely is a solid shooter though, but it might have some trouble against the competition.

Any demo that kills me 10 seconds in with a completely unheralded airstrike apparently dropped my own side does not fill me with confidence for the finished product.

I saw a preview of this some time ago which left me with the impression that...

Doesn't this mean that the hook that makes this game unique vanishes, and leaves the character more underpowered than when he started?

That's not actually a spoiler, they've been rubbing the transition from Mantel to renegades in our faces for quite a while. Apparently the Nectar remains a gameplay hook from the renegades' point of view by providing weaknesses for them to exploit. For example, since the Nectar obscures the world's gritty violence, corpses are overlooked and so playing dead becomes an option. The nectar isn't the hook, but the element that provides an excuse for heavily asymmetric sides in the conflict.

Also, the renegades use Nectar grenades to overdose the soldiers, sending them into berserker rages so they cannot distinguish friend from foe. I played a demo of this back at PAX last year.

Well I was ready to pat myself on the back a second time for being right on yet another polished turd after Dark Sector but after playing, I'd have to say that its a polished turd with some redeeming features. While it is, for the most part pretty standard FPS fare, the graphics are above average, though really not good enough to justify most fanboys' desperation to compare it to Crysis. The shooting gameplay is actually somewhat fun and above average compared to most FPS'. However I can't see any real benefit from co-op other than it's now the AAA flavour du jour. Depending on how you feel about the whole nectar gimmick, this could be a $20-30 buy or not but overall better than I expected. Dark Sector on the other hand, even more mediocre than I expected

Im getting sick of all this wannabe military bromance that Ive been seeing of late though, Turok, Haze etc.

I actually kind of liked it in the demo, because it made you're teammates seem like assholes who you don't want to really be associated with. It strikes me as something the developers are poking fun of.

Also, I heard one of my 'bros' cry "Leeeeroy Jenkins" as he ran into battle, which is win in my book.

Well the only thing is they're not making fun. They're living out the fantasy of being in their own personal war movies and late developed macho jock envy that comes from spending the early part of their lives as nerds and the military culture that develops from working on video games 24/7 with no women around

There are more branches of military than just the marines and most people that have not only seen combat, service and had anything up close and personal will not be all "Hey brah" about it. It's fantasy but it also devalues war into something like a sunday football game.

That animation is awesome.

Tom Chick had a brief write-up on it at Quarter to Three. He didn't like it either:

Okay, it's after midnight so the embargo is lifted on the review copies of Haze that went out last week.

I've played through the whole thing and as much as it pains me to say this -- I've loved most everything these developers have been doing, and I wish them all the success in the world -- Haze is utter and complete tripe. If I can prevent just one of you from throwing away money on this underdone turd of a shooter, I will be happy.

I'll have a full review online somewhere in about a week, but I care enough about you guys, and I know that enough of you guys are Timesplitters fans like me, that I just had to warn you, before it was too late. Heck, get Dark Sector, or that cool Viking game, or that cool time travel one whose name I can never remember. But trust me: this is not the shooter you're looking for.

I have this high on the rental list as I thought the demo was OK. I'm very eager to try it. My prediction on this: The gameplay and story will be no better than Halo but Halo will continue to be held on a golden pedestle while this gets dumped on.
