I have decided that with my economic stimulus check that I will buy myself a new office chair. I'm willing to bet office chairs are an important part of most of our lives, so I was thinking that I should ask the goodjer hive mind. Does anybody have an office chair that they really love?

Hmm. Here's the one I use:

I bought this one for my home office about a year ago and love it. It's slightly less comfortable than the Star Treky ergonomic chairs like the Aeron. It's a good deal, especially considering that it only costs a third of what those other ultra-high end thrones will set you back.

The Herman Miller Aeron, hands-down. I'm still sitting in one I bought 10 years ago. It's taken a truly amazing amount of butt time. There have been few days in the last ten years that I haven't used it. I bet I've got close to 10,000 hours on it so far, and it's still in excellent shape... except for the left arm, which I took off because I screwed up the cushion on it. Not the chair's fault.

Great recommendations. Shows how sheltered and cheap my workplace is, haven't even seen chairs that nice. The Aeron might be a bit steep for me but maybe that's because I haven't tried it yet. And I guess if it does last for 10 years it would be worth it. I'll probably end up with something in the $300-400 range like OG_Slinger's recommendation.

Anyone going to take the easy layup here?

I guess I'm no help. I've got an Aeron at work and a Mirra at home.

I've seen Celle's (their newer model) online for about $450, though.

I'll just second everything Malor said about the Aeron. I can sit in mine for 8 hours straight with no fatigue at all. It is by far the best work chair I've used.

Another vote here for the Aeron. I've got one at work and another at home. Expensive, but the apparently the finest asses in the world are using them...

Wow...you people spend a lot on butt-comfort. I like Paleo's chair, but I work for the gorvernment so no religious decorations allowed. Also, there aren't enough bloody skulls on or around it. It really needs to be on a hill of bloody skulls for...ergonomic reasons.

Seriously though, the Aeron looks interesting, but not very cushiony. For $1000-1200 you would think they could throw a little foam on the thing.

The mesh seat in the aeron fills the role quite nicely.

I can't stand the way mesh chairs feel. I have never felt comfortable in any of them, though I've never been able to pinpoint exactly why.

My discomfort normally comes thinking that my gigantic buttocks are going to destroy the chair. It happens in normal office chairs - I've broken three - so I don't see how a mesh chair can contain the raw power of my ass.

I'm in bighoppa's shoes on this one.

Although in my case it's usually not the seat it's the connection with the back (maybe the sides) and mostly the base. They use crappy plastic for the legs and the hinge (I like to practically lay down in my chair at home).

I got this about four months ago and really like it. It's for folks with, umm... shall we say, big spreads. Picked it up for $450, it has pneumatic lumbar, wide base, extra long seat to support your thighs, and pivoting arm rests. Really comfy and solid as a rock.

Yeah I'm starting to lean more towards that Aeron. My back is always sore and I have the money. Now I just need to find a good retailer where I can try all the variations out. Does anybody know of any big name companies that sell them or is it really just Herman Miller retailers?

I'd imagine it's less comfortable for long periods of "riding bareback" as it were. Is... that a concern for you?

Another Aeron fan here. I have two. At one point my dotcom had 20 of them we had to sell in the inevitable bankruptcy fire sale auction. I bought them from the company for about 100 bucks each and distributed them to friends. I'm going on 10 years on the two I have. Flawless. Pain in the ass to dust, thats about all I can say about them bad.

You don't need any cushioning in an Aeron. It looks hard, but the mesh is suspended, kind of like a trampoline, and has quite a bit of give to it. It breathes very nicely, and you don't have any hot spots at all. You can sit down, stay put 12+ hours, and then get up without being sore. It's just remarkable.

I used to wreck chairs on a regular basis; hardly any would last more than a year or so. I bought the Aeron sometime in '98, and it's still just as comfortable as ever. Assuming they're still built the same way, I don't think your ass power has a chance.

If I could just find a Aeron True Black chair, Size C being sold tenderly used from someone on Ebay or Craigslist.
I can't even conceive to spend $900+ on a single office chair. Rabbit is one lucky mofo. Lend me that foot of yours.

I sit in one at work and if I could I would steal it and take it home with me.

Edit: I stand corrected. They have a few Size C Aeron chairs on Ebay that are $500 range.
I still can't force myself to pay that much for a chair though... grrr.

I highly recommend you get the right size chair. I have an aeron from my dad, who worked at Herman Miller which is maybe just a bit too big, and I get kind of restless in that after sitting for more than a couple of hours.

My brother in law has a Freedom Chair that I was impressed by. The lumbar support dynamically adjusts as you tilt and the head rest was very comfortable. Its about the same price as the aeron at places like http://www.sit4less.com.

That is quite the awesome chair. Thanks for spreading the word on that. Very cool indeed.

The Aerons are expensive, but they're built better than anything else I've seen. Like I said, I have 10 years of constant, heavy use in this one, and it's still just fine, thank you very much. Yes, it's expensive up front, but it's super-comfortable, and lasts freaking forever.

I went through a lot of cheapies until I found this one, and I've never had to buy another. $500 is really pretty damn reasonable.

Aerons are available at my workplace per request/ergonomic assessment. That's IT. On the business side some departments have them as a standard-issue chair. I am content with my chair (another standard-issue model), and what I really like about is is the integrated coat-hanger on the back.

My colleague in a cubicle next to mine asked for an Aeron, and received it. He likes it a lot. I tried it, and although it feels nice, there is nothing extraordinary about it. I think if you're in healthy bodyweight limits, maintaing right posture, don't cross your legs, and take breaks and stretch every hour or so, then you can use any chair. Most of my early career is a programmer took place in Soviet-made chairs that usually didn't even have any cusioning on em -- just lacquered plywood hard-tops.

No matter what chair you get, you're going to get restless. Unless it's so comfy you fall asleep. I stand up every 20-30 minutes to do something (pushups or 30 seconds of darts usually or more coffee) unless I'm really in the groove.

I've been having back trouble for some time and my current job is very cheap. Our chairs don't even tilt backwards. So I knew I was in for a world of hurt when I took the job. So I bought a Steelcase Leap. It was around $950. Well worth it, though. My back pain went away and I can sit comfortably all day. It's actually become somewhat of a joke now, the fact that I bought my own chair. Sometimes someone will ask what we could do to make working here more attractive and someone will say something in the neighborhood of "Get everyone a 'Preston chair'".

Also it gets stolen a lot when I go on vacation. It's that comfortable. I'm not bragging, btw. I'm just stating what I did and how much people (including me) like the chair. It's obviously a serious investment, but it's the kind of investment I think you make if you have to choose between back pain for life or spending extra money.
