Nintendo Channel
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 - 11:54am
Information available here.
Basically, it's a way to look for games, with trailers, info, etc. and some sort of recommendation service based upon what games you're playing and maybe what games you rate highly (presumably using a recommender system ala Amazon). Kind of neat idea; I could see someone who doesn't play a lot of games using it to figure out what's good and what's crap.
The cool bit though? Downloadable demos for the DS. There's only nine right now, but the service works well.

Interesting. I assume this is why my Wii was glowing blue this morning?

I like this channel. I finally got to try out Jam Sessions without dropping $30 on it.
!
I think i'll like this channel, tonight i'll try Ninja Gaiden.
Great idea. I just wish Nintendo had a friends system like Live and I could see what my friends recommended people to play.

Finally Nintendo brought it to America. Japan has had this for months. This is just one more step for Nintendo to finally offer all the connectivity they should have offered from the launch. I love you Nintendo, I've owned (and still do) all your consoles, and I like playing the games brought to your consoles more than the comptetitors, but you are just way to slow getting online with stuff that should just be a no questions asked standard.
That said, I can't wait to try out Ninja Gaiden on my DS! I've heard lots of good things about this game and my DS is getting dusty sitting on it's perch in my room.

At least this starts to address one place the Wii falls behind the 360--demos. Yeah, I know there are some demos you can get at via Smash Brothers, but demos are one of my favorite parts of the 360 online experience.

Yeah, but those demos are only for the DS. What about Wii game demos? It seems this is a near impossibility as the system doesn't have enough memory to store console demos really. Yeah, Wii Ware is coming (should have been around a long time ago, too) and that will have up to 43MB games that still look good, but nothing as complex as a real game demo, I'm sure. That sentence sounds funny saying finished games will not be as complex as demos, but it's kinda true as you see w/ other systems demos can easily be well past the 100MB file size and many times in the GB's. There was a recent comment from Iwata (I think it was him) that the storage capacity issue is being looked at, though.
Plus, it's not like it's easy to walk into a store and go play at a Wii kiosk as usually controllers are nowhere to be seen for the system.
At least one of Nintendo's systems gets demos.

Wait, it's up now? I thought it was going to be released concurrently with the WiiWare channel. Guess that's why my Wii is glowing blue right now.

Oh no, I'd never do that again. I just got rid of the polterglice, don't want to repeat that mistake.

Considering many Wii games must be played to be appreciated, game demos would be most appreciated.

I agree on the demo issue. I've bought several DS games based off of the DS download station demos - most notably Elite Beat Agents, which looked incredibly stupid to me in videos but was awesome when playing. Currently I'm enjoying the Crosswords game (a bit easy, but I suck at crossword puzzles) and Ninja Gaiden. I'll probbaly end up picking up Ninja Gaiden - the stylus control really works.
If I were a bad demoman, I wouldn't be sitting here dicussing it with you, now would I?

I think you can recommend games for friends to play at least I thought I saw that option.
I was surprised at the video quality. IT's good. Full screen too if you click on the video. Volume controls too. (Tangent: should they have a permanent volume control knob or switch on game controllers?)
Makes for good couch surfing.
DS download stuff is great. NOt sure why you can't download directly from your DS, but it's easy enough to do otherwise. Ninja Gaiden DS is pretty sweet actually.
Big purchase button on the main screen for any video you watch if I remember right.
Links to other related videos and games and internet sites under more info for the game you're looking at. Upcoming release info too.
All in all it's a nice touch.
Yeah, the buy function and everything is there. I like the fuill screen function a lot as borders around videos ALWAYS bug me. I want the video and then nothing but blackness coming from the screen.
Recommendations are there as well, but only for select games. Zack and Wiki and Okami both do not show up when searching. I gave up after that.
My gf played Ninja Gaiden while I fiddled w/ the channel and watched videos (boom blox looks entertaining, but not worht $50). She really liked it and wants the game now.

Boom Blox is totally worth $50.
!
The skiing game looks intriguing.

I was wondering why I woke up and my Wii had turned itself on I shut it off and then I got home from work and it was on again. I figured maybe my Wii was getting mad at me because I haven't played it recently.

Seriously, did the Wii do a stealth update and not turn itself off? I've noticed my Wii doing the same thing a few times over the last month or so. I always figured one of our neighbors somehow got their Wiimotes to turn on our system (like cordless phone cross-talk).
I turned it on this past weekend to play Mario Galaxy but didn't look at any of the other "channels". Maybe I should check it out.
I tried to make this post not beg for OOCT, but it's pretty much impossible when talking about the Wii .
