Age of Conan "Beta"?
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008 - 9:24am
I got an invite to the Age of Conan "beta" a while ago but never bothered to go get it. Is the beta over? I've heard the invites only last a certain time but you can do something to get a new one? After listening to the podcast I'm interested in giving it a shot.
Also... realistic requirements? My computer's pretty old now (my Sins buddies will attest to that), but will I be able to run it reasonably even if it's not pretty?
According to the official release I meet all the requirements but only exceed recommendations in RAM but I've learned not to trust official requirements.

The Beta tends to be a less kind mistress for those with minimal system requirements, but I know some have had luck with tempering graphics down and at least getting it playable. I expect the release version to be much friendlier.
As for joining the beta, it's open until the 11th, so if you still have your key, you should be able to join. Be warned, there's quite a lengthy download involved, so you may want to get that going soon.

I'll take a look when I get home.
By the way... should I decide to get this I'm going to want to pre-order. I'm hearing that the rhino is the mount to get (BestBuy pre-order) but the mammoth comes with saddle bags that are apparently important? Does the rhino get those too? :/ I'd kind of prefer the mammoth but I hear the rhino is better for just getting around because it's faster.
On the other hand, I do have good memories of leaving war elephants to die on battlefields, thanks to Dynasty Warriors 4.

Is the Rhino faster? I hadn't heard that. If true, I'd expect the Mammoth to have some other benefits such as siege combat abilities. Hopefully, each will come with saddle bags, too. Eventually, though, both will be available to everyone in game (pre-orders are expected to look differently, though, to retain some unique benefit for doing so), so you can't go too wrong either way.
Honestly, for me, it came down to convenience. I didn't have easy access to a Best Buy locally so an on-line order was the best option.

Rhino is the faster of the 2 but his damage out side of his charge is lower.
The Mammoth is obviously bigger and can do more damage etc.
Rhino will come with saddle bags as well.
As for the beta invite, at this point if it is an open beta invite. I would pass, you are going to spend a few days downloading only then to be frustrated by the client. By the time you get it running you may have a few hours to play before the open beta closes.
With my CE I will have the 5 passes I will PM you one on launch day if you like to try out the finished product.
If you have a closed beta invite fire that sh*t up hop on vent and let’s roll some heads.
The open beta client makes Hellgate’s launch day look like a success.
Luckily the closed beta client is pretty damn smooth right now. So I am not worried about launch.

Based on what I've read:
- The mammoth is slower, but does more damage in PvP siege combat.
- Rhino is faster, but less damage.
- Both come with the bag.
Lobster, if your system is at the minimum required, your system will probably need to play at relatively low resolution with most of the cool graphic details turned off.
I'm planning to upgrade my system just for this game, but I'm waiting for the retail release to decide whether a video card/RAM upgrade will be sufficient, or whether I need to upgrade everything.

I can't really afford an upgrade so I've kinda gotten used to my non-Valve PC games looking like sh*t. Valve games are still programmed with faerie magic so they run nice and smooth even at pretty high settings.
Wired, I do have a closed beta invite but I'm not sure if it's valid anymore. I got it a while ago. I'll let you know if I need to take you up on your CE invite offer.

Lobster, you plan on plying a game that has a monthly fee?
I can only think of a certain Ghostbusters line when i see this...

Actually, I have to give Blizzard a lot of credit in that department, too. Their games have been visually pleasing even on older machines. WoW, though cartoony, still has wonderful scenery and sharp animation. Blizzard is the best at giving you the most while asking for the least, in my opinion. That may be one of the reasons WoW is so successful.

Oh COME ON, like 1% of the threads on this board are about something other than WoW, can we please keep it out of this one a little while longer?
After a year of paying well over a thousand dollars a month in bills and mortgages and whatnot, the value of $15 has shifted slightly.
Slightly.

Housing costs have a way of putting a $15 monthly fee in perspective.
Especially if you'll play it enough to avoid purchasing a lot of other games.

A happy ending! Time to help keep the MMO section clean.
Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles
