Why Doesn't My 360 Recognize My iPod?

Not sure if this belongs here or in tech or whichever...
For some reason, my iPod is never recognized by my new 360. What am I doing wrong?

What ipod are you using?
If its a touch then you're out of luck my friend.

sorry that's all I got.
I hate you soo much Phil Collins!

Its working, just the xbox fans are drowning out all sound in the room.

sorry... I'm using an iPod Video (5th gen) with the latest 1.3 firmware installed.
I plut the USB cable into the controller port on the 360 and... nothing. The iPod goes into "I'm connected, don't dare touch me" mode, yet when I go to the media blade, it tells me that no USB device is connected. I know Microsoft was kind of sneaky about getting the iPod to play nice with the 360... but did Apple purposely "break" it with firmware updates?
Not a huge deal, but I thought it would be kind of neat to hook it up and see what it looked like.

Not sure if it affects recognizing the device or not, but I'm pretty sure there's an 'optional media update' somewhere on XBLM that has something to do with ipods.

As far as I know, all it does is add AAC playback support so it can play music ripped using iTunes. On a related note, I have to re-download this update every time I want to play music in order for it to take effect. Anyone have any ideas on what's going on or how to fix it?

The optional media update (which is a royal pain to find) is needed for iPod support, I believe.

The iPod Support download is actually what lets it read the iTunes DB in the iPod, although it only seems to work for audio. AAC support is just something it does. And remember, you have to change the media source in the dashboard to access it--the popup Guide would just list it.

Times likes these makes me glad I have a Zune. Wireless Zune to 360 Streaming <3
A few additional points:
1) I downloaded the AAC thing from LIVE before trying to connect. Unless there is another download I'm missing, I don't think this is it.
2) I hit X to change source, and the USB device option is greyed out. If I try to click on it anyway, it gives me an error sound.

The miracles of google search. "Xbox 360 IPOD support" + google = First link.
You need to download the "Optional Media Update".

The miracles of skimming. I already said in the post IMMEDIATELY ABOVE YOURS that the "optional plug-in" does nothing. All it does anyway is play AAC files, which I don't use.
Any other suggestions?

I didn't skim, you were just calling it the "AAC thing" which made me think that it was a different file altogether then the "Optional Media Update" that everyone else was referring to.
For the record I needed this file for my IPOD Mini to work correctly even w/ MP3 files so Kurrelgyre is correct that it makes it able to read the iTunes database. As far as I know, none of my friends that have the 5th Gen have any problems although I doubt they ever update the firmware. Maybe try clearing the xbox cache then re-downloading the update?

Maybe your iPod's file system is corrupted in some subtle way that doesn't cause any problems for your PC and the iPod itself, but which the 360 doesn't like? If that was the case, a factory reset should do the job, though I guess doing that will be either an annoyance or a real PITA, depending on how much stuff's on the iPod.

I've got a fifth-gen video (with the most recent update) and my 360 reads it fine, though the media player just lists all the files alphabetically by filename, including videos and podcasts, rather than by artist/album/genre/etc. It's such a pain to sort through I generally don't bother with it unless I reeaally want to stream a podcast through the console.
It's all well and good until someone loses a torso.
Well, here's an obvious question: is it formatted for Mac for Windows?

I think I've got the same iPod version (different size) and haven't had problems. I usually just stream from my computer, though. Seems to me that something's wrong.
In the meantime, have you tried streaming from your PC?

formatted for PC.
I have about 45GB of stuff on my 60GB iPod... so yeah, major PITA to to a restore since I don't keep any of my files in the iTunes library.
Baffling.
Is it possible I have a bunk 360 somehow? Is there any way I can test the USB ports?
xbox LIVE: NatsuMatto
Plug in a keyboard, external hard drive, or USB thumb drive.

Yeah, make sure your USB ports are working on the 360.
Actually Matt, it looks like we have the same device, only mine's entirely full.
