So a new video for Mirror's Edge, the First-Person Parkour Simulator (FPPS), came out of the SCEE gamer's day. Honestly I don't know how to feel about it.
I want to like it, because it seems like lightly trodden territory (with the emphasis on the running and less on the, well, everything else). This is doubly impressive when one considers it's publisher (maybe EA is cleaning up it's act, because this sure as hell don't look like Madden)
I also think it looks quite pretty.
But as I look at the video I don't feel like I actually want to play it. I would be happy to watch someone else play it. I like looking at it, but I don't know if I actually want to be in control.
So am I crazy (hint: the answer is 'yes')? What are your thoughts on the matter, ye gainfully employed?
I think the color palette in this game is fantastic. It's so refreshing to see a first-person title that isn't brown/gray/green. The geometry looks quite ambitious too.
I'll need to see more footage to comment on the gameplay, but I'm definitely interested at this point. Triple bonus points for featuring a leading lady that looks like a real person. I'm so weary of the buxom Soul Calibur babes that have overrun the gaming landscape for far too long.
I very much like what I see so far.

There's actually a point to that color palette too: to keep the interface immersive and HUD-less. Note how everything in the environment she can interact with is either bright red, blue or yellow.
It's like Driver, without the car!
It looks interesting. Maybe I'm a party pooper, but I found myself thinking: "This is cool, but it'd be so much more efficient if they would have used a third person perspective."
I suppose the idea is to head toward immersion, but there are plenty of ways to be immersed in a game that don't require a first person point of view.
Bravo for trying, though. I'll definitely give it a rent.

There are elements of what is essentially platforming that can rely too heavily on the third person perspective. Shifting to the first person doesn't just change the point of view, but changes the entire game, even if the same buttons made the character perform the same actions.
The only equivalent in first person I can think of is Halo. Though unnecessary, the challenge, benefits, and skill required make precise, agile manuevering very rewarding; and that's in an game that doesn't even attempt to focus in that area of gameplay. I know there's a game waiting to be made in this arena, but I can see where it would take many iterations before they nailed it. I hope they get enough right in the first go to warrant further exploration with this type of game.
I've been looking forward to this game for a long time now so i hope it doesn't disappoint - so far the media released hasn't so i'm feeling positive
EDGE had a nice preview feature on it a while ago and i really love the cover art... am thinking of making it into a mousepad.
Looks freaking awesome, I got goosebumps.
I would be happy to watch someone else play it.
While I applaud the designers for breaking away from the standard FPS and videogame cliches, I think Zoid came close to something else important. Very few games are fun to watch someone else play for any significant amount of time. I feel like I could watch this for 15 or 20 minutes at a stretch and not get bored.
Here's hoping E Hunnie feels the same way!
Oh no, this looks like a game I will spend a LOT of time with.
An FPx where you can see your feet? Inconceivable!
(Looked real purty-like. I'm curious to see where it goes.)
How did she not shoot herself in the leg?
How did she not shoot herself in the leg?
Sexy reasons.
A prettier version of "meh". Looks like it'll get repetitive very quickly...
She is pretty sexy. After being spoiled by adult content in GTAIV and Age of Conan I'm pretty sure I would like to see a First Person Shower Scene.
This reminds me that I did a survey not too long ago involving this game. I'd totally forgotten about it until just now. It mostly had to do with boxart and which would make me more likely to want to play/buy it.

Are you presuming there'd be someone else in the shower, or just hoping for one of those fog-less mirrors?
Who doesn't like a good DP?

I was hoping you could look down at er, more than your feet! Multiple mirrors wouldn't hurt either.
This looks fantastic so far.
I was mildly disappointed when I found out it wasn't an "open world" game, but as long as the gameplay that exists is good, I'll be very happy.
Unless they screw things up terribly in the future, I'm already sold on this.
Condemned 2 was a great leap forward in terms of First Person Melee (since Breakdown and Riddick) so I'm hoping they can pull off the awesome sense of kicking someone's ass in that perspective. But more importantly, I hope they flesh out her character with a solid story.
I just downloaded and watched the trailer again from PSN, I got goosebumps watching it in HD on my big screen. Gotta love the blue skies!
I like the concept, the visuals and the sound (the sphat, sphat, sphat of running shoes, etc) but not sure I could cope with the first person view. At the moment I don't think it works but maybe, when you play, you get into it. I'd need to try a demo.

Give me the ability to leap across the tops of buildings, and I'll give you my dollars!
What has caught my attention in interviews is their stance against enemies as fodder that you clear to move forward. Plenty of games have chase scenes, but most can be beat with some judicious turtling or simply breaking the game logic. Will be tough to properly reward out-positioning enemies while not letting the endless swarm aspect get too obvious. And the whole game could choke on a ridiculous level boss. Yet I still have hope (and that feeling is almost worth $50 right there).
If nothing else, they'll raise the bar a little and remind other developers that it's okay to show some feet.
Ambitious. Looks like a fun one to play on the big screen, with plenty of heart-in-your-stomach moments the first time through. Definitely dug the use of color to draw the eye to the stuff you're supposed to interact with.
Not that I'd buy it. Will probably wind up on the list of "games that I would rent if I had Gamefly." Eventually that list will reach critical mass, and I'll sign up.
Thief is a twist on the first person perspective that was very immersive. I played it on my PC with my nose inches from the monitor. I wonder if this new twist will suck me in the way that game did. I could see how that perspective could make chases more involving and jumps more vertigo inducing. Yet, I wonder if I'll have to get the PC version and sit close in order for that to happen.
Is this what Assassins Creed would look like in FP?
I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed in the FP perspective for this game. Part of the enjoyment of watching parkour or free-running is all of the cool movements and jumps and I just don't think it will come across the same way in FP. I also don't think the immersion is going to be so great that it makes up for it. I didn't really like Breakdown or Riddick that much and I don't see this offering much more.

Are you sure you can do that?? This *is* the internet!
Looks good but I don't think it will live up to the hype, unless I can run all the way across lower New York any way I want it, that means going into buildings or running down the middle of the street. Without that the game is going to be composed of a few platforms per level disguised as rooftops....
