Flags on Constitution Day - An outsiders point of view

Quick background: May 17th of 1814 Norway signed its Constitution and it's celebrated every year on that day, just like 4th of July in the US.

Ok, so here's the thing: The other day the mayor of Oslo (our capital) decided that all citizens were to be allowed to fly the flag from their nation if they so chose. This means the flag of Pakistan,Palastine, the US and so on will be seen all over the town on the 17th. I'm normally a very liberal guy, but I think this is ridiculous. Why would they want to use the flag of, say India, on Norway's day of independence? It would be like all immigrants would use their flag 4th of July instead of the US flag.

What I want to know is if you guys think this is right. Would this be accepted in New York or Los Angeles?

I just needed to went that. Sorry...

So hell did freeze over after all; Welcome to Skjold!

Folks get threatened with knives for flying the Mexican flag in the US.

There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

Not as a common occurence though. Can we please save the America bashing for P&C?

It does seem strange to me to declare, I dunno, all flags equal on your country's Independence day? That does seem a bit off.

You couldn't really outlaw someone from flying a foreign flag on the 4th of July here in the US, but I don't think anyone would recognize it as pertaining to the holiday either.

Is there a flag day for everyone to fly their own flag?

Well, consider a reverse scenario. In Russia, amuzingly, the citizens cannot fly the state flag on their domiciles. The flag and the sigil (St. George spearing a dragon from a horseback) are considered state attributes, and as such can only be displayed on federal state's official buildings and premises, in a set of specific cases.

If anyone hasn't figured it our yet: In Soviet Russia, the state flag flies YOU!

Not around here. We've got every flag on every day.

Maybe they should allow every flag except the Swedish one on your independence day. I think that'd be interesting.

America could change "Independence Day" to "'Screw You, England!' Day." I bet it'd be great for our foreign policy.

As far as what Paleo said, it was not because the guy was flying a mexican flag it was because he was flying it over the US flag, in the USA. While I agree with the guys setiment his actions where a little wacky.

Funny you should bring that up, seeing as yesterday was Cinco de Mayo. A great celebration of a victorious battle in the war for independence... Mexico's independence, that is, not ours.

QFT.
In defense of the way the United States flag is flown in America, and not in defense of the knife weilding clown, the American flag in the States is flown above the other on a flag pole. I have actually worked places where the flag would come loose on the pole, and we would get phone calls from concerned citizens. Although, an upside-down flag is a sign of distress, not a falling off flag.

Another place I worked had some hillbilly want to fly a skull and crossbones if their was an American flag flown. Damned Cajuns.

As far as being sentimentally against disrespecting your nation's flag, I agree with you to a point. But a flag is a symbol, which is a form of speech, and what's more it is a symbol of government. And if there's one area of speech I want to be allowed no matter what, it's speech about the government.

Fortunately, the US supreme court agrees on that point.

Correct.

Quote:
Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "5th of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla. It is not an obligatory federal holiday.[1][2][3][4][5] The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

It's weird that the US seems to celebrate 5 de Mayo more than Mexico =/

It was just some battle... The interesting thing is that Mexico was outnumbered like 2 to 1, but it's not really like a big holiday here or anything. I doubt most people even know or care.

Amend the "war for independence" part with "fight against occupation" and then it's correct. More importantly, the point still stands, it's an odd one.

From what I have read, 5 de Mayo was always celebrated in places like California more than in places that are still part of Mexico. It was a way for some of the more remote areas to protest French rule.

Does your country celebrate Finland's independence?

Oh yeah, he's Norwegian, not Finnish.

I suppose I need to change this, then:

Not exactly. We're not allowed to fly the flag as we want. It has to be a real reason behind it, like a birthday or Worker's Day (May 1st). I think it's like that because if you see the flag everywhere every day it doesn't mean that much to you. But when you see it now you know that there's something special. Maybe that's a weird sort of thinking in the US, but it seems to work here.

Canadian Budweiser has a higher alcohol content than the American version, it almost tastes like real beer.
