One Less Thing to Argue With My Girlfriend About

My girlfriend has been complaining that she doesn't see me enough, mainly because she'd rather have me change my schedule to match hers than change hers to match mine. My problem with that is that she works from home and has not a single reason to not change hers other than "I don't want to" and changing my sleeping schedule on my weeks off never really works and always f*cks up my week, and that she'd see a lot more of me if she'd check her myspace and facebook less and actually suggested things to do together. I'm perfectly happy eating breakfast while she's having dinner, but for the next two months, it won't be an issue.

I'm getting moved from nights to day until (at least) the beginning of July. Normally I work a 7 days on, 7 days off (a Thursday to Wednesday week), 5pm-5am shift. Come 5/17, I will be working a 5am-5pm shift. I'm most likely going to hate it (I am NOT a morning person, and I'm going to have to start dress "nice," since, on nightshift, no one cares what you wear), but my girlfriend will love it. There's nothing I can do about it though (short of quitting). They need some of the normal dayshift people to help set up a new location, so I get to do what they normally do until it's up and running.
Cons:

  • Dress code.
  • Mornings.
  • The sun. During the fall/winter, I could go entire weeks without having to see it, and liked it that way.
  • Having to look busy for management even when there's nothing to do except wait.
  • Potentially less time spend reading the forums, since I do most of my reading/posting while I'm at work, and one of the daytime manager's a jerk about things he doesn't like (if it doesn't involve Survivor, hunting, fishing, hiking & camping, it's stupid and a waste of time).
  • Potentially a slightly smaller paycheck. Last time I was on dayshift, I got to keep the nightshift differential, but haven't heard whether or not I'd get it this time.
Pros:
  • Girlfriend happy. <- Most important.
  • Mother happy. She's never understood that I LIKE being awake at night.
  • Brother less likely to think I'm a vampire and threaten stake me if I couldn't prove I wasn't (actually happened).
  • Finally going to be awake to play Sins with other Goodjers.
  • Able to play TF2 on Stan's during my work week. This depends on how early it starts, since I'll be going to sleep around 9pm EST on weeks I'm working.

Now to convince her that "likes to look at boobies" != "wants to cheat on her".

What do you do that's 7 days on 7 days off? That sounds kinda like a sweet deal. Only thing I've heard of like that was firefighting.

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

My friend use to do 4 days on 4 days off. He worked as a junior engineer/manufacturer of...something I don't remember.

I too am not a morning person. Starting a new position at my old job after a year away and I have to work from 7:00am until sometime around 5:30pm. I'm salary now so hoping to take lots of time off and skip out relatively early on occasion.

Thats tight. I don't think I'd be on videogames that much after a 12 hour day anyways, but your choice.

Having a proper sleeping schedule is never a bad thing. Being a frequent nocturnal creature myself, I still feel that being in sync with the activities of those around you can provide a sense of rhythm and purpose to your life.

Sounds mostly good.

I used to work nights just two nights a week..was a killer to stay on schedule the rest of the week.

I'm a "computer operator" for a company that's contracted to help run the State's lottery and a casino. I sit in a room, make sure the system doesn't crash, do the nightly reboot of the system, make sure reports balance, et cetera, et cetera.

I'm not on that much, I get home at 6, and head to bed at 7:30-8. If I had a job that required much in the way of actual thinking/work I'd probably crash as soon as I got home, but my job is a very boring one. There's about 5 hours of actual work to be done in my 12 hour shift, so the biggest challange is keeping myself occupied while not getting so absorbed that I lose track of time. Also, I want to be fully awake when I drive home, which means I'm not ready to sleep when I get home, and use video games and movies to relax. If I were to go to sleep immediately after getting home, I'd start getting tired earlier, and run the risk of falling asleep at the wheel and crashing on the way home.

If you resent your girlfriend for making demands without being willing to compromise or work to change things on her own end, you might want to talk about that with her.

Oh, I have, and she understands now, but it won't even be an issue for the next couple months.

As someone who used to work the graveyard shift, I can say that a person who's never worked that shift will never, ever be able to comprehend it fully.

I should get points for admitting he's my brother...

This is so true.

I'm working 7:30pm to 6am right now and it's quite possibly the best shift I've ever worked. I went into it with some amount of trepidation but the longer I work it the more I like it. I've been on nights before, but never with a schedule quite like this.

Plus I'm practically nocturnal anyway even when I work a morning shift, so it works out great for me

Good luck on a less stressful couple of months. I think your girlfriend needs to rethink her complaints when your schedule switches back though. Sounds like she's being more than a tad selfish on that score.

I guess that was a little over the top. What I said before was something along the lines of too bad you're not a hair splitting singularity; I edited it because it didn't make complete sense and I couldn't phrase it right.

Okay, I'm still confused, but don't worry about it.
