All under non-commercial share-alike Creative Commons as well.
It's Halo 27 so it's an actual full release, not a remix album.
All I can say is Reznor's post-label career is getting cooler and cooler, off to listen to the album now.

Listened to it once, so far, I'm really digging it. It's like a mix of Year Zero and With Teeth. I think I need some more time with this album to really get the full effect of it.

Still waiting for my email with the download link. Their servers must really be getting hammered this morning.

Podunk: go to a torrent site. It's free! I doubt they'll be upset about you not hammering their servers.

Yeah, Trent seems to be under a new renaissance of creativity now that he's out from under the thumb of his label. =) Digging the album, it's pretty good. I've got to digest it more though.

Listened to it twice so far and I'm really liking it. 'Letting You' contains some definite shades of 'Broken' to my ears, whereas 'Head Down' is just fantastic. I'm also really digging 'Echoplex' and 'Demon Seed', and I'm looking forward to listening to it some more.
Trent has really impressed me these last few months, and I bet it must feel so liberating and creative to put all this music out on his own terms. When he updates his blog, you can almost feel his enthusiasm for what he's doing and I think for a musician in his position and relative experience, sometimes that enthusiasm gets lost with some of his peers. What he's been doing lately got me thinking that all future bands / musicians that decide to distribute music online from now on will have a hell of a lot to live up to thanks to Mr. Reznor.

Hmmm.
The Fragile + The Slip = Broken?
Anyway, I love this. I'm seeing NIN this summer in CT and Mass, anyone else going? God I love Trent Reznor, I want to have his manbabies.

Trent just keeps on 'Slip'ping all these new albums out under our noses, but how awesome! This is good NIN stuff here... I'll probably pay for the physical version when it comes out...
I like how each song has it's own image (at least in iTunes)... nice touch

I wonder if My Buddy Trent will be releasing some interesting retail package, like the Ghost I-IV, or Tool's 10,000 Days.

Stream of consciousness:
иine inch иails is the only band I've seen live on each of their major tours, including the first Lollapalooza. They continue to be the only band I will still see on all their major tours. The club warm-up tour for "With_Teeth" was incredible! It was great to see them in a small venue like that.
Oddly, I still like With_Teeth more that Year Zero, but The Slip quickly becoming a favorite. It's a little less friendly than the last few albums, which is an interesting turn. I think I am still having trouble registering it as a full album as it was released with no notice, and right after another double-album. Plus, I didn't have to buy it. Anybody else finding this to be the case?

However, he made a ridiculous amount of money on Ghosts and probably surpassed all of his sales estimates for both albums combined, so he just gave this one away. I've never seen him as a guy who was all about wringing every last penny from his fans, more about making a very comfortable living doing what he loves to do.
Oh, and I'm loving the album. I'm hoping to go to the show in Seattle this summer, but with the new baby I may have to miss it.

That is awesome that you've got to see all the different tours and variations of NIN live. I saw them during their warmup tour for With Teeth at the Kool Haus in Toronto and then during their full blown version in Montreal. I was planning on attending this upcoming show in Toronto but I had to cancel that approved week of vacation due to a surprise project that I have to take care of at work. I'm still getting over it. That's three albums worth of material to hear live since the last time I saw them! So upset.

Funny story about the Lollapalooza show I saw:
During the middle of the set, the backing tape broke. The audience booed, but shut up as soon as the music kicked back in.

It's to bad the album turned out to be crap. It reminds me more of ambient Electronica; bad ambient Electronica
Thanks for standin' still!

I really like it. I definitely like it more than Year Zero, which cooled pretty quickly for me. The more abrasive moments of The Slip almost remind me of Broken, but at the same time I think Trent has found some more immediately appealing melodies than I've heard from him in quite a while.
I'm with you. And yes, the lack of ceremony is a bit disorienting with this album, especially after the huge ARG lead up to Year Zero.

I'm right there too. I definitely prefer this one to Year Zero, right up there alongside With_Teeth. I've been through it probably three times plus a few listens to specific tracks after, and it's growing on me more each time kind of like With_Teeth did.

The Fragile and The Downward Spiral are still tops for me, but I'm enjoying the diversity across his catalogue, especially in the recent years.

You must be talking about Ghosts I-IV, because I can't think of anything even remotely "Electronica" on this album. Then again, you're probably just trolling. And here I am, responding. Silly me!

BTW Trent is having a Summer Tour 2008. Check out www.nin.com under performances to see when he might be in a town near you.
I may be going to the one in Houstin, TX on Aug 16th.

Downloading it as well now. This is really cool that they keep coming back with free downloads.

I appreciate that their album is free and all, but I just can't get into it. I like their old stuff though, like Pretty Hate Machine.

I'm starting to like nin more and more every day...
It sounds to me like The Fragile with all the fat stripped out, seasoned with Awitha Teetha-era danciness.
Trent Reznor is the pioneer in 21st century music distribution. He convinced Saul Williams to release his excellent album The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust for free (or $5 for a higher-quality version; it's well worth it), and he's been giving away the multitrack files of his songs for fans to remix since 2005. Not to mention debuting songs through USB drives left in bathrooms at shows - who else would think of that?
