XBox 360 to get Blu-Ray
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/xbox-blu-ray-360,5272.html
After months of rumors and denials, the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive is due to be manufactured soon and shipped in Q3 of 2008. Pegatron Technology, an OEM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, is reported to have received the winning order from Microsoft for a Blu-ray equipped XBOX 360.Earlier reports cited Lite-On as the company with the privilege of building the new console for Microsoft. Lite-On is also currently one of the suppliers of the internal DVD drive fro the XBOX 360.
One of the strong points for Sony’s Playstation 3 has been the integrated Blu-ray player. The PS3 had the ability to draw both gamers and audio/video enthusiast, and this was proving to be a major advantage over its XBOX rival. It is estimated that 85% of Blu-ray players in use are PS3s. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer had admitted that Microsoft had been working on support for Blu-ray under Windows during this year’s Mix08 conference. Rumors began to swirl and many began to expect Microsoft to announce a Blu-ray peripheral for the XBOX 360.
However, Microsoft came out and denied all rumors, stating that they were not exploring any kind of Blu-ray add-on or in talks with Sony about integrating Blu-ray into the XBOX experience. The software giant stated they would continue to invest in its XBOX Live online service as the means of high-definition content delivery. Toshiba received a crushing blow earlier this year at CES that Warner Brothers would be Blu-ray exclusive. This eventually led to Toshiba withdrawing from the HD format war and the demise of the XBOX 360’s HD-DVD add-on. It is interesting to note that sales of the XBOX 360 lagged behind Sony’s PS3 in the month of February, the same month Toshiba withdrew.
Many expected the death of HD-DVD would trigger a growth in Blu-ray hardware sales. However, to the dismay of the industry, acceptance and adoption of Blu-ray has been dismal.
The PS3 is one of the cheapest (relatively speaking) Blu-ray players available — and you get the console thrown in for good measure.
Saw this coming and am sort of glad I held out to buy either a 360 or ps3. It will be interesting to see what this puts the price of the 360.

They still won't be able to do games on Blu-Ray, because of the existing hardware base. This doesn't seem like a good move -- raising the price of their console by adding a technology that not many people want which won't even benefit gamers. It sounds like it's the result of marketing people raising a stink about the number of bullet points on the back of the box vs. the PS3.

I didnt buy any of the consoles I own - Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 for the video capabilities. They are nice add on features, but until Blue Ray meets the price point of a normal DVD 14.99-19.99 then the Blue Ray format will remain fairly stagnant at least among those who tend to purchase their movies as well as rent. Blue Ray will remain strictly a luxury item for video enthusiasts in a way CD's coexisted with standard cassettes tapes until both the hardware and the CD became priced in line with the technology they would end up replacing.

Yeah, I don't do $30-40 movies unless it's like Blade Runner CE or something totally awesome. Regular movies need to bump to the $15-20 before I start buying them casually.

i wonder what kind of market has video gamer and av enthusiast? If I was both, I'd most likely get a regular blu ray player and pick my video game system based on games.

The market for video gamer + AV enthusiast?
Well, I have to wonder ... even if Blu-ray did not sell the PS3 to gamers, how much Blu-ray sold the idea of a PS3 to gamers' spouses?

Too little, too late, I should think. Anyone who would want that combination probably already sprung for the PS3 in addition to their 360. Who knows, maybe it'll make them drop prices on the other models.

Asus eh? I guess Microsoft still hasn't learned any lessons about using quality hardware.

Meh it's a selling point for me. I don't have a 360 or a PS3. By the end of the year I'll be able to finally afford one of them. Perfect timing imo.

Do MS ever confirm anything? Ever?
Personally I couldn't really care... but I *might* be buying one in the future, so it's a selling point for me...
Also, it gives them a good opportunity to start working on the software/firmware for the next MS console, which will HAVE to have a blu-ray drive in it.

That's assuming it has an optical drive at all. I'd not be surprised to see the next gen go digital download exclusively. The only reason I think it wouldn't is retailer pressure.

Unless they stop selling their consoles at retail, I don't see retail discs going away.

Another reason is that fact that not everywhere in the world has good internet...
Even if it is a couple of years away, some countries are lagging behind (read Australia) and thats detrimental to their sale.
I have what is considered an excellent speed in Australia (512/128) and I can't imagine having to download games, full 10gb+ games over the internet. I downloaded TF2 over the weekend and that took me forever, and meant I couldn't use the internet at all during that time.
Digital distribution is not a viable solution for another 3 or 4 years. Unless there a serious advancement on the horizon.
I suspect optical drivers are here to stay for another generation at least.

Eh, if it's true I kinda wish I would have held out for both consoles, but then again my PS3 allows me to watch Blu-rays without it sounding like I left the vacuum on.
Which makes me wonder if Microsoft is making this move because they are foreseeing the tough slog ahead. About a year ago, everyone I knew chose the 360 because paying $600 for a system with less of a software library and an unproven video format didn't make sense. Now I know that a lot of people making their first console purchase think PS3 is the better deal. The best Blu-ray player and DVD upscaler on the market, free online play, a larger hard drive that's cheaper to replace, and most importantly you get wireless without having to spend another $90 for a piece of plastic.
You're nuts. The only company that makes better motherboards are Intel.

If they end up selling a Blu-ray addon, like the HD-DVD addon, how is this at all a bad thing? I can see myself buying that pretty quickly.
I'm already eying the HD-DVD addon on eBay, having both on the same console would be amazingly convenient. The whole media hub experience.

Because they've stated that it won't be an addon. It will be built into the console. If it was an addon, I'd love it and would definitely purchase it. But if I have to buy a whole new console to get the Blue-Ray, then forget it. I'll buy the PS3 if I ever decide I want Blue-Ray.

Not true at all. I've been eying the PS3 for a couple of months now because I want a Blu-Ray player. I've never been much of a console gamer, but the lure of Rock Band and GTA4 is calling to me. The fact that the PS3 has a Blu-Ray player makes it a justifiable purchase to my wife. As much as I really want a 360, I can't find a way to justify a $400 gaming machine right now, but the bundled Blu-Ray changes the dynamic.
If there was a Blu-Ray 360 out right now, I would probably talk my wife into purchasing it.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Asus hardware (several mobos and an AsusTek laptop) but I have heard that for some reason they've gone downhill in recent years.

I've had so many of their mainboards (including high end gaming ones) for customers that have failed in the last two years, some less than a year old with problems like disdended capacitors. It's definitely possible that many of their other product categories are better but I wouldn't go near one of their boards anymore.

That's really a shame. It's been almost 3 years since my last build, but the Asus mobo in that machine has been just bulletproof. There's no excuse for a "high end" manufacturer like that to using cheap capacitors.

I've built up a couple dozen A8N (and who knows how many A7N) machines and have now switched to the Crosshair boards and have had nothing but good experiences. I'm fairly certain every board manufacturer had capacitor issues when the big counterfeit capacitor conspiracy was afoot. I think we lost a couple of Asus dual CPU boards due to caps but I use Asus MBs exclusively and have had great success.

Seems like a smart move to counter people picking up a PS3 because it does Blu-Ray, as long as they don't end up making the 360 cost significantly more than it does now or dropping their profit margin too far into the red.
It'd be nice if they moved the Premium down to $300 or so, dropped the Arcade down to $250 to compete with the Wii, then put the new model where the Premium sat. As long as I'm dreaming, an external $100 Blu-Ray add-on would be great. Get to work, Ballmer!
Obviously my experiences are my own and everyone's mileage may vary. My personal experience is that I've been personally using MSI boards since 2003 and couldn't be happier. Good support, regular updates, quality builds, good BIOS design etc. Asus is still hugely popular and will continue to be and hey, the restaurant POS guy I do work for has built with Asus mini-ATX boards for years and has had like 2 of 300 fail. I just remember when I ran my Geek Squad store, replacing a lot of Asus boards that were barely out of warranty. Who knows though. You can definitely do a lot WORSE than Asus and for a contract as big as Microsoft, I'm sure they'll be putting their best Blu-ray drives forward.

Yeah, if it's "integrated" into the new systems, and not also available as an Add-on, screw 'em, I'll buy a PS3.

Frankly, I plan to get both systems eventually anyway, so this is not a selling point for me.
Of course, I have to worry about getting another job first. Stupid suppressed job market in this stupid backwoods fricking town anyway...
