Do you actually like your avatar?

I haven't been a member of the site for terribly long, but I've changed my avatar three times already. However, there is a ton of people on the site who have had the same avatar as long as I've been here, and I've really started identifying them by it. I have never been able to pick an avatar and settle on it. It's not just this site; I can't settle on an avatar for any of my IM clients, or other sites I belong to. Does anyone else have this problem? For those of you who have settled, why? Did you find "The One"? Are you too lazy to change it?

Please, grant me some insight! Make me feel better about my "condition"!

I love my avatar. I only had two before it for brief periods before I settled on it. I changed it for five minutes a month ago, but never again.

I've considered keeping it as Colbert but switching the photo but love the horns too much. I know Desram changes to different photos of his avatar. Chiggie had an Iron Man thing for a bit.

I'm with you Lex and identify people by their avatars. I don't even read the names. So, when skimming, if I don't recognize your avatar, chances are good I'm skipping you. So, I'm really thrown when people change their long standing avatars, like Legion did for a while (or is it still changed?). However, I still spot Desram. The change is only slight enough that he's still recognizable.

In conclusion, Podunk can never change his avatar. Ever.

I really like my avatar, though it's a bit overdramatic. It's a picture from CNN of a french student walking towards riot police. If I change it, I'll probably put something funny in there instead.

I think I've had something like 35 avatars.

I'm not joking.

I use to save them all and just stopped.

Frankly, I always try to find an avatar that represents me as a person, but, I'm fickle and complicated (and arrogant) so I find the only way I can stay happy is to change my avatar with my moods.

I've been using the same one for a while now, though I've been through a handful (such as Jayne and 300). You just gotta keep experimenting until you find the one that you feel suits you. Sort of like relationships.

I just changed my avatar last week. It used to be the ninja. I really liked it, but I felt like it was time for a change. My interests switch so quickly, that its hard for me to find one that really gets any kind of deep emotional response. So I just keep switching until I find one that lasts for more than a month. Then I eventually change that one.

Switchbreak, I've always thought yours was from that episode of the 4400 where the kid takes over Seattle.

Thank you, Chiggie. That really does make me feel better.

Tkyl, I was so used to the ninja that I didn't even recognize you. I'm trying to avoid inflicting that kind of difficulty on other people like me.

I've thought about changing my name before. I don't think I'm the same person I was two years ago, and have often thought that the moniker I chose for myself might not be the best.

But, I wouldn't dare change it at this point. More people know me as "Chiggie" than Stephen at this point. Changing my name would be like getting plastic surgery.

I had an actual coffee grinder back when I was, well, a coffee grinder. The TF2 beta had just gotten underway, and I signed up for the steam community, and noticed that someone had posted a comment that was something like, "It's like the invasion of the coffee grinders around here..." So I decided to humor them. Since then I changed it each time my rank changed. I settled on the soldier, since that's how most GWJers would recognize me anyway, and resigned myself to the fact that my tag would be a soldier quote. Whether I like it or not, I think it's how most GWJers will identify me, and that's just the way it is. It's like a nickname a friend gives you.

I use this one most of the places I use an avatar. I've got one or two others I use from time to time in other places but I'm pretty happy with the diver dog here.

I used to have an avatar that was me with a gas mask and sunglasses (which I loved and still use elsewhere) but when the 100 Kirbies came out and a got a chance to reference my namesake with little effort on my part I had to go for it. I'm pretty sure I won't change it unless something particularly perfect comes along.

I think I am one of the few here that actually made mine. It's no major work of art, I admit , but I think it reflects my nature of keeping things simple while still being creative. I've considered updating it from the basic black & white sillouette to something colourful and 3D a couple of times but I kind of like it the way it is.

I can attest to that. When I met him at the Chicago S&T he was like "kaostheory.... Companion Cube?" (which was my avatar at the time)

I'll probably switch periodically. I don't think I can be a Centurion forever.

I've changed mine a couple of times. Lobster proposed this one as a jokey dig on me, so I just kinda embraced it and ran with it.

The joke is that I do a lot of "Indian Princess" program activities with my daughters. Basically a daddy-daughter program like cub scouts. So Lobster sent me that avatar as a joke. I naturally made it mine.

Tell me about it. I was posting over at IGN since it was N64.com and when they opened up the new board system, I picked a terrible name (ad69). It was a combination of my initials and birth-year, so I thought it was witty. Now it just looks dumb (good thing I finally cancelled my subscription after 8+ years of posting there). While I only have a couple sites where I actively post these days, I've found that it's much easier to simply have my real name as my user-name.

..................

As for my avatar, I like it well enough. I'm a fiend for Dostoyevsky so my pic fits the bill.

I've gone through a few. I have my current one because Pyro is my favorite class in TF2 and thats when I stopped lurking so much and started participating in the forums a lot more. Plus, the Pyro shoots fire just like my namesake Gamera does.

If I could find a decent picture of Gamera that still looks good when shrunk down to avatar size I would switch to that in a heartbeat.
