I actualy like Firefly! (read on for stupidity on why I didn't)
Ok so just like Fallout, I've learned not to question my geek brethren, especially when they rave about something over and over till my eyes bleed. I had the revelation a few nights ago that I'd actually confused Firefly with Farscape many years ago since I was introduced to both about the same time and Farscape was so very very very very lame that I forgot it even existed. It was nagging me how I'd watched Serenity years ago and Didn't Actually Hate it. So after watching the series now, it's very endearing. It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread (well except Inara, she pwns sliced bread and I'd give up my 360 for her) but it was definitely unfairly cancelled and in the ADD age I can see it taking too much time to bloom for most network execs. I'm still more saddened by Drive's cancellation as Tim Minnear seemed to have learned from his experience with Firefly but still apparently not enough for the execs
So did anyone else start speaking in Western colloquialisms and a twang after watching this show?
Oh and it definitely sucks watching Serenity without watching Firefly and I can see why it did poorly at the box office if you hadn't got a chance to see the series before it was frakking cancelled. *goes off to watch it again now*
I also sat through all of Serenity the first time wondering where that Ben Chowder fella was and maybe the show had the balls to kill off the main character or three in the series lol

Oh god. That's like confusing Mickey Mantle with Mickey Rooney or something.

Don't believe him! It's a trap, it's gotta be! I saw how he hated on it in the 'things you should like but don't thread'.... Nuh-uh, no way, not going to get me in your 'kill fans of Firefly' thread.... no-siree!

Love Firefly, didn't get round to it or Serenity for ages then saw the DVD's in bargain bin - Joy..
Love the tongue in cheek western space philosopy and enjoying summer as a Terminator too!!
Can't believe it hasn't been resurrected after all the positive feedback, even at this late stage?

All the kings people (browncoats) couldn't put humptey dumptey back together again.
Even with a huge push from the browncoat community to the point of them buying thousand of dollars of tickets in some cities and handing them out couldn't help the box office results. People that didn't know about it stayed away. It was considered a flop. It'll have to make-do with "cult classic" status

I refused to watch Serenity without seeing the show first. People told me they could be watched independently and I (wisely) didn't believe them.
I watched Firefly on hulu.com a couple months back and then picked up Serenity from Netflix. Both were really good. I was saddened and surprised about certain happenings in Serenity (I won't give specifics for people who haven't see it). It really closed the book on Firefly... granted they could always make more stuff either before Serenity or before Firefly.
I think the saddest thing for me is that they never explain Shepard Book's history well enough for my liking.

I remember when Firefly first came out I was still (and still am) jaded by the awful piece of crap "Mantis."
Remember Mantis? Guy in a wheelchair? Suit that helps him walk? Doesn't share this technology with the world? Just uses it to beat up normal motherf*cking people?
Anyway, I remember hearing "Firefly" and immediately thinking "Mantis", figuring this to be another attempt at using a cool bug name to promote the worst f*cking sci-fi show I've ever seen.
Anyway, I went and saw Serenity and loved it. Then my poor Cro-Magnon brain but 1 and 1 together and I went out and bought Firefly the next day. It is to date one of the best shows I've ever watched in my life.
Don't feel so bad. Sometimes we just ain't using our smarts.

Sadly, yes.
It's a series that took a little while to get its legs. It's not lame, however like many sci-fi shows, the first season (or two) was inconsistent. And you have to be able to get past the Muppets.

I, for one, am in the "loved the show, but don't want them to resurrect it" camp. And I have a two-word explanation of why: Evil Leaper.
I have too many bad memories of what they did to Quantum Leap in the fifth season to want to see another show get "saved" by its loyal fans.
And given that I really dislike most of the episodes on disc four of the series, I'm not so sure the writing wasn't already declining. (Why'd they have to go and make Mal all Noble in the brothel episode? As if the poorly written, cardboard villain wasn't bad enough, they totally nerfed Mal. The Mal from "The Train Job" would have just shot the bastard.)
I am, however, willing to entertain the argument that the last few episodes went downhill due to pressure from the network to make the show into something it was never intended to be. That's certainly what it felt like. (In my mind I don't even consider the brothel episode to be canon to the Firefly 'verse)
All that notwithstanding, though, I still think it's one of the best sci-fi shows ever aired. If only because they steadfastly refused to make space noisy. Serenity doesn't hum, rattle, or whoosh during exterior shots. That alone gets them a gold star in my book.
On the Farscape thing, I like Farscape. But I am unwilling to pay the money they're asking for any given season. I'm as big a fan of Jim Henson's Creature Shop as there is, but I wouldn't even pay more than $50 for a single season of a series if I were the star of it.

I agree. Not one of my favorite shows of all time, but very solid space opera. It was kind of what Buck Rogers is supposed to be like. I put it up there with Babylon 5 in my category of "SF Shows to Enjoy Without Going Crazy Over." I'd put the current Eureka in the same category.
They can't all be Kirk and Spock kicking the crap out of aliens, which remains my own personal gold standard for TV Sci-Fi.
I agree wholeheartedly. Perhaps my favorite moment of the entire series was when the Alliance torpedoed a derelict and the entire scene was done in complete silence. It was at that moment that I realized "Yes, that's exactly the way it should be!"
One of the saddest moments of the series was the big space battle in Serenity when, because it sounded like every other sci-fi space battle ever.

Whedon defends this by saying that everything within the ion cloud was in atmosphere.
Does it make things better when you remember that the scenes around Miranda were silent as well?
Fedaykin98 wrote:
I loved Whedon's take because he realized that total silence would be odd, so some of the best music of the show and the movie is during the exterior space shots. Not only does it make the scene correct, but it is a fantastic opportunity to show off a really wonderful score.
Full marks all around.

Yes I have a friend now experiencing Firefly for the first time, and she is loving it.
I envy her the "first time" experience, but I still enjoy the episodes a lot when I run through them about once every 6-8 months.
And then I get angry again at how it was cancelled.
Happens. Every. Time.
