Seeing as the tourney and season are dead things, I thought we'd use this thread to consolidate talk for those few of us that still play.

Well the Mariner's had a major roster change today that I'm sure Trashi' would like to use. But alas who knows when the next roster update will be. I'll be joining up shortly. (obtw, there is a rumor that another patch is in the works and there has been another roster update given to MS on the 23rd to put up...maybe it has. I've not been on for a few days.)
Good luck everyone.

Hey Donan, Please feel free to go ahead and take the M's for the season. I really enjoyed playing the tournament with you guys but I'm afraid I have too many things going on right now to commit myself to a season. Good games in the tournament and have fun in the season!

Darn. Too late! If not a big hassle with just 3 of us signed up, can you restart the league Swampy and I'll take the Mariners? If a hassle, no big deal (I just hope we get 8 folks.)

NOTE: Btw, Trashi', you certainly picked the right 3 days to watch the Mariner's early on. Great Summer like weather (which has long gone back to Winter shortly thereafter) and goo games. Hope you enjoyed them!

Trashi, you'll be missed. It was great to play with you.

Donan, OK. I will restart with 6 teams given the rather low response.

hey guys, i'm afraid i'm bailing on the league too. i enjoyed playing against you guys in the tourney and the pickup games, but found it to be kind of a hassle having to schedule my free time (for the tourney and league games). i'm afraid i'm just gonna stick with my single-player offline franchise.

like i was telling swampy last night, i let my live (gold) membership ran out since i just don't play enough online to justify having it. i think i will eventually re-up it, so hopefully i will get to play some pickup games with you all in the future.

Sorry to hear this, but can completely relate. It's definitely hard to schedule free time AND especially from West-East Coast too (especially during the week). Take care and have fun and hopefully we can all get together for something else down the line.

I hate to say that I'm also going to bail on the league. I just didn't enjoy the online gameplay much at all. I think I will stick to text based sims for my online baseball fix, although it's been awhile for that as well.

If you see me online, feel free to hit me up for pick-up games, but I don't want to commit to more than that right now. Our APFB league is taking up all the time I really want to give to online league play for now. That game really shines online, while MLB 2K8 is much better offline.

Good luck to you all!

Oh well, I blame 2k's flawed game release more than anything else.

Next year may be the year I take the plunge for a PS 3 to play the show.

Yep, for all the bad rap about Sony's free Network problems and lag and etc., lot's of folks play on-line and many call the lag problem a myth (but I think it's there and random from all I've read in Sony's forums. And not that bad anyway). Torgo, who posted in THE SHOW thread got 12 folks to play a league with The Show.

Last night I won my first ranked game, 5-2 over the Yankees at Fenway. The guys had some kind of "Top Dog" rank thingie, so I got a 50 gp achievement for beating him and now that price is on my head, so if you play me in a ranked game and beat me, it passes to you.

I fear that those of you that got disenchanted with the softball -like scores playing strike only may have missed out on how good the game plays if you are willing to accept high cheese with a 1-2 count, just like real life. I have had some very realistic scoring games playing pubbies in ranked games. Sure there are more strike outs, but I dare say that makes it a better more realistic game. I have yet to play a pubbie that never throws a hittable ball. I end up taking some 1st pitch strikes early on, but that does send a message.

If any of you guys wants to play me in an anything goes pitching game, I think I'll be able to convert you.

I saw you playing the other night, and noticed the score. I wondered how it was playing a ranked game.

If you see me on, hit me up. I'm willing to give it another go.

I've been playing the crap out of my single player franchise. I recently started using SFG's sliders with the latest roster update (5/09). The gameplay realism just a got a huge boost. Part of the key was the zoom and wide angle for hitting. While the pitcher seems farther back, you get such a better look at the pitch, and enough time to decide to swing or take. I've been getting quite few walks. The other big epiphany for hitting was setting the back step to zero. That way, you are no longer penalized for stepping early or late. It makes a huge difference.

On the pitching side, I've been forcing myself into some house rules, Mainly, I only throw what the catcher calls. And I aim for his glove exclusively. So I throw more balls, but I also get the CPU chasing breaking balls out of the zone. The key is really concentrating and getting your pitches down. This guys sliders includes some notes, letting you know where to move them if you start getting too good. I'm not having that problem yet. Last game I gave up six hits, and six walks. While only gave up two runs, several of the innings were intense battles. Not much more I can ask for. Especially since I've had teams also score 6-11 runs on me.

But limiting myself to what the catcher calls forces me to not rely on a fastball that I have boosted by hitting my payoff pitches. It also forces me to risk that boost on payoff pitches. That system is really amazing, as it really emulates the confidence that pitcher has. If you hit your marks with two strikes, you get that boost, but miss them and start seeing those red numbers, you start to panic.

I'm 8-6 so far into a 162 game season. I've 11-1 and 3-2. I've lost 6-0, and 8-6. Just a great variety in games. Totally blew an extra inning game. I score four runs in the last two innings to tie the Dodgers 4-4. Despite loading the bases in the tenth, I failed to push a run across. Then, in bottom of the eleventh i made the big mistake. I used a pinch hitter form y pitcher in the top half of the inning, bit forgot to warm anyone up. The first pitch was deposited into the seats, the Dodgers winning 5-4 on the walk-off home run.

Last night I got my own walk-off homer, as Chris Duncan hit his second of the game, and my Cards won 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth. The best part was that I finally got my Chris Duncan card, in that I needed him to be named player of the game. That was fun.

The big downside with these sliders is time. When you start going 5-6 pitches into a count, it takes so much longer than swinging at the first pitch, so it is now taking me longer to get the season in, but I am enjoying it even more.

Like the grounded Jayhawker (hope that knee feels better), I've been playing exclusively an offline single-player 162-game season with the Pirates. I modified the sliders and was able to get reasonably realistic scores and offense. Although my Pirates were 22-15, 1st in National League Central, with LaRoche and Bay leading the Majors in BA and HR, and my pitching staff has a sub-2.00 ERA, so I guess it's not all *that* realistic

But here's the bad news, I had to make a mid-game progress save, and now it seems my saved file is corrupted. It will not let me load the franchise file and I get stuck on a loading screen every time. I emailed 2K Sports and they offered no help except for 'start your season over.'

I am disappointed that I may have to scrap my season that's nearly 1/4 finished, and a bit hesitant to start a new one since I am afraid it may happen again. The general consensus on the net seems to be to avoid the in-game save as much as possible.

I'm tempted to trade in my 2k8 for an used copy of the MLB'08:the Show for the PS2. Is that too melodramatic?

2k has had problems with season saves getting corrupted for years. Nice to know they never cared enough to fix it.

To be honest Nova, for single player if you have a PS2 or 3, the show is a better game (from what I hear and have seen on the PSP).

I got a PSP for my wife the other day, so now I am considering picking up The Show. The problem is, the biggest draw I found for The Show is this year's Road to the Show, which is absent from the PSP version. But some handheld hardball sounds cool (now there's some OOC materail for ya!). I just need to wait long enough so that my wife still views the PSP as "her thing" before I start buying games that are strictly for me.

Now that my wife is enjoying the PSP, all I need is for LotR to show up on BluRay, and I will start my full court press to pick up a PS3.

Until then, MLB 2K8 is my baseball game of choice. It's too bad 2K let all of the glitches overrun what is a pretty cool game. I'm very excited for next year's version. Of course, instead of just polishing this game up, we'll be introduced to another "feature" like baseball cards, which will take resources away from fixing the bugs. But I can still dream, can't I?

Hey Jay', hope you are feeling better. BUT, the PSP version of the 'The Show' does indeed have RTTS (i.e. Road to the Show).

(btw, Best Buy has a great deal that saves you $40. PSP Core, 2GB mem stick and a travel case for $189. 99. And they are selling The Show for just $29.99 (10 buck savings.).

See thread on The Show for a review of the PSP 'The Show' and RTTS (or check gamerankings).

I'd love a desighner to say "We're not adding any new features this year - this development cycle will focus on stamping out b ugs and glitches, as well as producing realistic on-field action". And I want a pony.

One thing I have found out is that if a pubtard does the old "unplug the network cable" trick to get a drop instead of a loss, if it is an official game (5 innings) you still get the win. Kind of like a rain out - a tard-out.

I'm 4-6 in ranked games. Lat night I won with Wakefield giving up 2 runs through 7 innings before the tard-out occured after Manny smashed a 3 run shot to put me up by 6.

The June campaign starts and I am now 1-0.

The guy I was playing bailed in the 3rd after I hit a double to put me up 4-2. Odd, he was pitching me tough, I had struck out 3 or 4 times, walked once even, before Manny hit a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to the wall. As the second run scored he disconnected.

I tell you, pitching realistically with junk balls if the guy is swinging at anything makes the game very realistic. Maybe Strikeouts are high, but if you start taking pitches, and can work the count and make him throw a strike to avoid a walk, the game becomes SO much better.

With JayHawker's settings for the batting view, I can get a feel for pitches. I still strike out alot, but I'd rather have that and a 4-3 loss than a 20-18 win!

Yeah. But you have to be willing to guess sometimes, I equate it to sitting on a fastball so you may take some strikes. All in all I find I can still get hits and even walks from guys that will try to strike me out using any means necessary. I'm sure some guys expecting strike only games hate me and think I'm a dick, but as far as I can tell I'm not getting bad reviews. I always thank my opponent, even the quitters, and no one has replied saying I play unfair. But yes, I highly recommend it for online play.

2-0 in June thus far, last night the guy quit early. Way early, 3rd inning whgen I was up 4-2

So last night I (As Manny) hit a long drive to left center. The guy I was playing gets his fielder against the wall. He had the guy jump (I think he would have caught it without the jump but it was at the wall). The ball glances off his glove into the stands for a home run. I thought the game would not know what to do and freeze up, but it disn't and called it a home run. I ended up winning, 5-3. I'm 5-4 in ranked games so far this June.

I finished June 10-4 in ranked games.

Sounding like you are really enjoying yourself with this game and that is great. AND kicking some dudes and getting dang good at it too...which is REALLY great. Continue success (and now if MLB 2k8 ever does come down in price before the season is out, I can pass on it for I would be like single A playing an MLB team if I tried to play you:>)

I highly recomend the ranked games. By this time of year you have some talented guys playing that don't mind a realistically played game.

Although my rep has taken some hits by some poor sports (IMO), I still have more good games than bad ones. Just realize that if you are pounding a guy he may bail before the 9th. I give them a free out < 5 inninngs these days, otherwise I make them forfiet or they just drop. But still, I am having a great time.
