Fancy Pants Adventure

Fancy Pants Adventure features a stick figure protagonist whose pants, to be honest, are not all that fancy. And while Mr. Fancy Pants is adventurous, to be sure, today's Act Casual selection is not an adventure game. It's a two-dimensional platformer.

Fancy Pants Adventure lifts its game mechanics and design sensibilities from Mario and Sonic, so expect lots of leaping, sliding, springboarding, and looping acrobatics. It's a beautifully animated game, and unlike most browser-based platformers its controls are precise, fluid, and fun. The series' second release, World 2 (wherein you rescue a tasty frozen treat from a giant purple rabbit), is more polished and varied than World 1 but both are worth a look.

Use left and right arrows to move, "S" to jump, the down arrow key to duck/roll, and the up arrow key to open doors. The space bar pauses the game and "M" toggles music. Hit "Read more" below for some screenshots.

Frustrating. I can't get that snail shell to go where I want (in the level with the cannon that shoots you up), no idea how to get the shell to go up that high onto a platform. No amount of kicking it around seems to get it up that high.

Argh. Silly game.

The shell kicking is completely optional. You don't need to mess with the snail to get to the exit.

Aye I know. I'm just OCD that way. When a game gives me an optional goal that offers a challenge that exceeds the basic game mechanics by that much, I tend to obsess.

As an example of a game that offers optional challenges that AREN'T this much above the difficulty of the main gameplay, I offer Psychonauts and its collection mini-goals. I loved the gameplay in Psychonauts enough to play through a second (and third!) time to try to get them all.

Perhaps my dismissal of this one as silly is a bit harsh, but it drove me nuts, whereas Psychonauts collection games (for me) were a fun goal to work on mostly because they were not that much more difficult than the regular gameplay, and it was easy to retry levels when I missed a few.

I know, I'm comparing a AAA title with a flash game. Silly.

I liked this a lot. It was great to see a major layer of polish go onto the existing concept. I went back and played the first one, and there were some issues with "bumpy" terrain. This was a much smoother experience.

This is a great casual game. Something you can mess with for a few minutes, and is deep enough to be fun. It really pained me when platforming got far from exploration and experimentation. Fancy Pants captures that old feeling.
