So, amidst all the GTA nonsense, Jayhawker and I played our game. He won 16-14 on a FG with 0:13 left. Very close game without that much offense. Indeed, even the stats were incredibly close. Our QBs had identical 52.4 ratings. Both backs had 17 carries (my Earl Campbell with 4.8 ypa and N. Means with 5.5 ypa). Etc., etc.
I could not stop some late drives where Novacek just ate me up. I also threw a terrible INT on a drive early in the 4th quarter that set up one of his FGs. I still have no idea what happened...I led the receiver to the left, Cunningham threw short, to the right, and right into a LBs hands. Ugh. On the flip side, my defenders had *11* passes defensed...no INTs. They have fricking hands of stone!!
At any rate, great game as always, Jayhawker! I think we've played 5 times now, and you've won each of them by about 3 points, almost always late in the game. These sorts of tense games, though, are part of what makes APF2k8 so much fun!

It was a great game. How about this balanced stat? We both punter FOUR TIMES!!! When I forced firesloth to punt the first time, he told me it was his first punt all season. When he then forced me to punt, it was just my second. Who would have guessed that this would have been such a defensive struggle?
At no time did either feel like we could just go get points, although the drives for FGs at the end of each half saved my bacon. It really was a classic game. If I could, I'd sit and watch this one again. The game turned on what it usually does. Turnovers. I picked off Cunningham once, and I avoided (by sheer luck - 11 PDs!) an INT. I did get a second INT on the final play of the game, as Cunningham launched a Hail Mary.
Great fun!

Yeah, I was impressed -- I've only seen a Hail Mary get to the endzone one other time in all my games. I find it's a pretty awful offensive play, as the TE is kept in to block, but the defensive scheme against it usually involves a blitzer (CB?) who often gets to the QB before he can launch it. Still, even in those plays where the QB got off a pass, I've rarely seen the ball get to the endzone.
You're right, too, about not being able to go out and get points. I felt like my running game didn't get going until my last drive. Stupid Derrick Thomas (and all those other LBs). In a season that seems like it's offense happy, this was an interesting, tense affair.
Wow, if only APF had a saved games feature!

Campbell had 9 carries for 64 yards on the last drive. He had 8 carries for 18 yards up until then. I had really put all me eggs into stopping him, but that workhorse ability really came into play in the fourth quarter. That's why I knew I was in trouble when you held me to another FG on the previous drive. A TD would force you to pass, because you would have to score twice. Instead, you had 4:30 left to drive for a TD. Not only could you afford to run it, it was the right choice. I had to burn all three timeouts in order to have just 1:13 to drive for a FG. So Campbell was a beast on that drive.
But this was why the game was so fun, clock management was huge. There were so many things to take account of when calling plays. You had no idea how much I was panicking trying to decide to pass or run at the end. I really didn't want to settle for another FG with any time left on the clock. It was a tight balance, with no timeouts to use.

So, this morning on Sirius they were interviewing Jay Novacek, who was recently chosen for induction to the College Football Hall of Fame (here in South Bend...). After my recent close game with Jayhawker, in which Novacek caught a crucial long pass on his winning drive, I said to myself: "I hate that guy."
Nice that my reaction to players comes from APF. Incidentally, after listening for a bit, I don't really hate him...well, not as much as I did early in the interview. Sounded like a nice guy who is spending lots of time hanging out in Wyoming.

Wow. GTA derailed the league, I think. Ertic, I'm back from out of town and will be available around 7-10pm PST until Friday. Friday I take off on vacation for 10 days. I'm hoping we're not still on Week 3 at that point, but it wouldn't shock me right now.

Doh! Apparently somewhere in there everyone else played and now they're waiting on us. Let's try to play tomorrow, Ertic. I'll be around like I said. Let's do it and roll on to the next week. If we do that I can get my next game in pretty easily before I head off on my vacation.

Me and frankie played our game because he was going out of town this week. So we didn't want tie things up for next week. Just a thought because of the flex schedule maybe if if get tie up for a long time. let some people play the next week to help get things moving. Because it fells like we have slowed down to a crawl.
Of course people can always play a week ahead. I'm not stopping that.
I made it a flex schedule for that very reason. I just don't post the next week's thread until I've officially advanced the schedule.
As far as things slowing to a crawl I'm as bummed as anyone. This is my favorite game. GTA just took over. Sucks.
