I've been enjoying getting back into LOTRO recently. In case anyone is looking to get the Founder's pricing, here's your chance.

Very tempting. However I've yet to see what it can be like with a group. I would like it if other people I actually knew were playing the game. I know GWJ has a community, but it's also great to play with an actually buddy, you know?

I can't imagine that this says good things about the financial state of the game. It's a shame as the LotRO guys seemed quite nice when they were on the podcast.
WoW Blackhand Alliance

Erissar - 67 Druid
Grumbar - 65 Hunter
Jergen - 65 Paladin
Heckfire - 63 Warlock
Groups are great fun. And Joe, I'm not hearing that they are doing badly. I think it's just good business for them. The Founder's pricing deal is predicated on not missing any months, so it's a lock-in.

Yeah, a long time gaming friend of mine recently gave LOTRO a try, so that drew me back in. I'm having a good time exploring a new MMO with him. A newbie once again.
Like Robear, it's not like I'm hearing this game is on the skids or anything. It obviously doesn't have the same subscriber base as WoW, though.

You know, this certainly tempts me into trying the 7-day trial to see what it's like. My itch to explore, discover, and behold new wonders is growing quite insistent. I can't get that in WoW anymore.
With my wife (Valleja) having to travel pretty heavily over the next three months (including Singapore), I don't think she's going to be able to dedicate herself to the long hours necessary to raid anytime soon. I might be able to tempt her into trying LotRO, though, if it doesn't involve having to commit yourself to 5-hour stretches of raiding time.
The real question will be whether or not AoC will prove dominate as my MMO of choice.
A small voice in the recesses of my mind, though, whispers that my wife (very PvE & Anti PvP) might find more enjoyment in Middle Earth than in Hyboria, and quality play time with her might be better found herein.
And I certainly hope LotRO isn't struggling... that last thing MMORPGs need is one title to rule them all. It would kill the genre.

It's actually a 14 day trial right now.

With the price of the base game (which includes the first month) hovering at $19, you could literally do the trial, then add the base game for a mere $19, and still have a week or two to decide whether you want to take advantage of the special pricing. I sent an email around to my buddies because the timing of this is too perfect.
That said, I plan to try AoC in May. But right now I'm having a good time seeing a new world with a friend. Kind of what you're looking for.

LOTRO has some form of raiding, but I have only experienced up to L15. The quests have not generally taken longer than 10-15 minutes so far. But, I'm still in newbie land.

Yeah, I gathered that there were some instances and raids that could be run. Something about 6-man dungeons, and four groups of 6-mans for raids, or some such gathering.
Personally, I'd be happy if it was possible to run anything that didn't involve missing dinner on the west coast.
Another aspect that struck me as hopeful was seeing the screen shot of a dead balrog (in the other LotRO thread) that was apparently taken down by a couple.

Errr, that screen shot was of a couple that went with a a 12 man raid.
There are two current raid zones in LOTRO, The older which is a 24 man raid, is relatively easy except for the end dragon and which can be cleared to said dragon in 2-3 hours.
The other (and more fun and challenging) raid zone is a 12 man instance which can clear to the Balrog in 3-4 hours.
Both of the zones operate on locks, so many kinships (guilds) will work on the zones over a couple of nights in smaller chunks of time.
Additionally, there are several 6 man instances that groups can attempt from the mid 20s to level 50. Several of these are shot, less than 2 hours, several are longer, and the most challenging one also operates on locks, so that groups can complete it over several days.

This game just wasn't fun for me for more than ~3 weeks. I signed up for a 7 day trial a few weeks back and was bored out of my mind. I know all classes can solo effectively but they are really bland. I can see where a few of the classes (burglar in particular) would light up in a group but the combat is still very stilted and not satisfying.
LotRO has better story and story infused quests but, gasp, Vanguard has much more and more interesting classes and better combat. Believe it or not, I payed for a month sub of Vanguard when I could have continued with over half the days left of my free trial of LotRO.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
I haven't heard much about Vanguard. Actually, scratch that. I had never heard of Vanguard.

I wonder if they still have my old account... If there's a decent GWJ community there, I might consider popping back in.

I think most of the really active GWJers are in this guild.
A friend and I are playing around with LOTRO while we wait for AoC to be released, but the old GWJ kinship is pretty quiet.

The Lotro combat system is like the rest of the game in that you don't get T3h sHiN3Y at level 10 and then just have incremental additions slapped on. While your options are reasonably limited through the first 20 levels, at that point the game begins to open up, and it just gets more interesting as you go along. Whereas in WoW, by the mid-20's you have all the *types* of combat abilities you'll ever have (judging by my Shaman experience), and they then get more powerful, in Lotro there are late-blooming abilities that structurally alter how you fight. It keeps things fresh and interesting - provided you like the base system, of course.
Just my thoughts.

I love LOTRO and this is tempting. Probably would have done it if I had not just auto-renewed on the 9.99 plan.
Personally I think Turbine know's where it stands in the MMO market. They are kind of a hold over while people either, 1.) Get tired of WoW. 2.) Are waiting on the MMO they want to play 3.) Both. For Turbine it is in the best interest too get the cash now. Really it is a soild marketing plan. Plus they have an expansion in the works, typically that means you are doing very well and holding your own. Actually I think Funcom stated they 200K subscribers to start making a profit. Pretty sure LOTRO is around that mark plus...
Again I would do the life plan, but I fall into the (2) area where I am preparing for AoC for Life! Still I do plan to keep my LOTRO account active. I will say this Turbine does not get enough credit in the post WoW world. If you stack LOTRO up to WoW they each have there strengths/weaknesses. However, at the end of the day LOTRO is the MMO and not the evolution on the aciton RPG.

Well actually, this is the very reason that I've stopped playing my hunter at the moment. I went and looked up my skills that I would receive for the rest of the run up to max level and found I already had every combat ability that I would ever have. Upon seeing this I lost interest because I knew that the game I was playing at 30 would be the same game I was playing at 50. This is a real shame because I was really enjoying my time with this game and was looking forward to finishing the epic quest line as I was having lots of fun with it.

Right. Whereas Loremasters mature in the mid-40's. So I read that as different styles of play. But with LMs and Champions, anyway, there's a long run-up to the final build.

If I sign up for a 3-month plan now, it will cost $30. I'm wondering, will I always be able to keep this rate, or will it revert back to $15/month in August?
Currently I believe it will continue at the $10/month rate for as long as the account remains active. However my only confirmation of this is an IGN article. Second to last paragraph: http://pc.ign.com/articles/869/869198p1.html
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
This seems to be the official page. Still not 100% clear. Maybe check the terms you accept when you sign up.

It's clear, and I did the $10 deal for a few months. Unless you fail to pay a month, or cancel, or change plans, you'll get the special rate in perpetuity.

Funny thing is I wish I would have went with lifetime but not after playing for a year at 9.99 is paid for in 2 years of playing. I am not sure if jumping to lifetime is the right move and I still have trouble saying 2 years from now this will be something I will be playing even if in a casual fashion.
With my track record, it's a good bet.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, maybe for the start of year 3 they will give founders who have stayed current a $99 option.

I will open one of my six mouths, and sing the song that ends the Earth.
