Too many Ds

I've been playing a lot of Odin Sphere lately and I must say I'm in love with the artwork and storytelling (and even most of the gameplay). I'm also waiting with baited breath for the Street Fighter II HD Remix. This has led me to realize that 3D is simply one D too many.
I long for the simplicity and sophistication of some of the old school 2D games, and I was wondering, what old school games would you love to see given a brilliant HD makeover.
Personally I'm imagining Legend of Zelda (NES) with all of it's original gameplay mechanics but with lovingly crafted HD environments and visual effects.

There's so many being done now, it's hard to pick. Bionic Commando Rearmed looks amazing and should be coming out soon. If I had to pick something unannounced, I'd say .... Sky Kid. I loved that game.

I haven't seen anything new with the depth of a Zelda, though. You're correct. Aside from on the DS. There seems to be a lot of side-scrolling stuff on XBLA, but nothing like a Zelda or even Super Mario. Not sure what the scene is like on PSN.

Prince of Persia on XBLA is well done. It's only an hour long, though.
I usually indulge my jones for that sort of game by digging out some of those old games.
Abe's Oddysee from the PSOne was one of my favorites. The game that came out with Disney's animated movie "Hercules" is another good one, but it can be hard to find.

Alas I don't still own anything from generations past. Sigh.
I also am really enamored with the idea of taking those tried and true design and play mechanics and applying them to a high def platform, and taking advantage of all that has to offer.
I just thought about Contra. I've heard the new DS title was classy, but imagine it in wide screen. Imagine how many bullets you could fit on an HDTV.

Wow, looks like it could have some juicy tidbits. I'll definitely have to check that issue out.
The cover mentions Sonic... that franchise is a perfect example of when the leap to the third dimension was a huge mistake. But a nice high res 2D Sonic game could be really cool in my estimation.

A Shining Force 2 remake would be nice since I never got around to playing that one. The first one was great though.

This is a pipedream, but I'd like to see the first 3 Sonic games redone in HD widescreen.

I would love a new, good, megaman game. Even Megaman X remade in HD and some additions would be great.
But if think that there are to many D's now, just wait until Peter Molynuex or Ken Levine bring games into 4D, whatever 4D is you know that they will find a way to do it... . . . .Or at least say they are going to do it and fall miles short.
I'm dissapointed...I thought this was going to have oodles of oogaba and the title was being funny (since there's no such thing).

I'm finding it hard to believe Nintendo hasn't been working on this, or Sony (for the PSeye) & Microsoft (for the Vision cam). Just imagine Mega Punch Out! with head-tracking.
Though, aside from this, makes me wonder when cinema 3d will make its way into homes...

Yes, that will truly be a revolutionary day. Current-gen games with their still images will be completely blown out of the water by games that incorporate graphics that actually change as time moves forward. The cost to make games will go up considerably, though -- they will have to incorporate "animation" and perhaps even develop "physics" based procedural motion.

Did I live like, in an alternative gaming youth? We loved playing Streets of Rage and Double Dragon and Final Fight and all those awesome 2d beat em ups, but no mention of that here. River City Ransom was awesome, at least it has been mentioned =)

The 2D beat em up is indeed a genre that could do with a resurgence. I too enjoyed the thoroughfares of fury back in the day. I'd pay to see that updated.
As for RCR, I had fun with the game, but mostly because it was fairly easy to get the skill that equated to a "win button." I think that one could use a gameplay update as well.

I would die if they released an HD Chrono Trigger with Odin Sphere level graphics. Hopefully I wouldn't literally die, but it's a chance I'd be willing to take.
