Twenty greatest fight scenes

Found this pretty cool article (complete with youtube clips!) over at rottentomatoes and thought I'd share:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/1722234/?spotlight=1

It's an interesting list with some unconventional and original choices. Was pretty stoked to see the ten minute final blow out in Fist of Legend make the cut. Also don't forget to check out the honorable mentions, the Star Trek fight is hilarious.

I'm sure we all can think of scenes that didn't make the list, and quibble with some of the choices (Bridget Jone's Diary??) but I thought they did a pretty good job. Certainly a good way to kill thirty minutes or so.

They excluded any fight that used weapons, so things like Kill Bill or Matrix Reloaded weren't on the list.

I got to give a shout out to one of my all time faves. The final rooftop fight in "Who am I?"

The jacket and tie gag was priceless, and my god, those legs.

Sure I first saw it on VHS in high school (when I was less discerning), and sure it's a silly movie but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

There is a fight in DRUNKEN MASTER at the start of the film, under a train, with Jackie Chan and another guy and bamboo poles that is just an astounding tour de force of choreography and camera technique. My favorite of all time.

I agree, I clicked through each page until I got to "They Live" just to make sure it was there, then I stopped.

Oh, come on. The sequels blew mightily, but the original is sill a solid film, and an important milestone in moviemaking history.

The only one realistic one in the bunch (well, after the flying through the window bit) was that scene from Bourne Ultimatum. I must have viewed that scene at least two dozen times and am still impressed by how both fighters make the correct counter decisions.

If Bond was half the fighter he thought he was, he would have ended that fight in the first 5 seconds with a series of vicious elbows to the jaw.

Legend of Drunken Master is filled with great fights. Both Ong Bak and The Protector have amazing fight scenes, particularly the four-and-a-half minute long single-shot fight in The Protector, where not a single word is said for the entire duration, followed by the main character screaming, "WHERE'S MY ELEPHANT!?" just in case you forgot the entire plot and needed it summed up. And then the rest of the movie has almost no dialogue.

But one of the greatest all-time fight scenes ever is in Anchorman.

While a joy to watch the Bourne fights are nothing more than elaborate sinawalis or lock/flow sessions. Still amazing to watch.

Nah, the Fist of Legend fight ends with a guy's throat being slit by a sword.

I've got to shoot out to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's fight in the bamboo forest

also the Lightsaber duel in Empire Strikes Back

and the best fight scene in the Matrix trilogy has got to be the Morpheus vs Neo dojo scene.

I tend to prefer fight scenes with character development in them vs pure action, although Fist of Legend is the best movie ever made.

EDIT: This is another great fight from Fist of Legend, the blindfold scene.

We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Personally I've always enjoyed the fights in Fight Club, especially the beating with your own shoe part.

Actually, one omission for me is the fight between Mad Dog and Chow Yun Fat and the undercover cop in Hard Boiled, which I thought was really cool. Cooler than the They Live fight, which I find very dull, or the end fight in Kung Fu Hustle, which I found pretty silly. There are some very cool fights in that movie though.

There is a recipe for an fight scene that I find exciting, and it involves the combatants being fairly equally matched, and without the cliched "hero loses/baddy gloats/hero gets motivation and wins" narrative.

Really? I thought that movie was extra-boring...

The Bourne fights are awesome, but the weird camera ruins them. I would not say they are realistic, tho...

Not to belabor the point, but thats only like 20 seconds in a 10 minute fight. In the comments the list creators say they excluded weapon-centric fights, and actually plan on doing a 'best weapon fight' list in the near future.

They also mention they tried to avoid one-sided fights, which pretty much leaves out anything with Seagal.

Ok They Live is the best hands down! just because its a bunch of Brawlers destroying each other over a request to put on sun glasses! CLASSIC!

Also Snatch with Pit taking tons of damage only to come back at the last second FTW! The Music and camera work are top notch!

Fist of Legend.. a given but I still prefer Bruce lee vs Chuck Norris!Irresistible Force Meets An Immovable Object!
