Student claims to have induced as many miscarriages as possible for "art"

Saw this on Fark. The story is this "art" student artificially inseminated herself as often as possible, then took herbal drugs that caused her to miscarry. She filmed the miscarriages and smeared the... results... on plastic sheets.

Honestly, this sounds like a hoax to me. At least I really hope it is.

I'm with Staats. Whatever happened to just using your imagination and painting pictures of miscarriages like artists used to do in the good old days? Norman Rockwell used to do like 3 illustrations of miscarriages a month for the Saturday Evening Post, and people loved him for it.

I'm also calling BS, primarily because I don't think it's as simple as taking a few herbs to cause a miscarriage without any other negative effects.

Well it depends upon what you consider a miscarriage... and yes it can be that simple anything that effectively kills the baby will generally cause a miscarriage, and honestly if you want to define it broadly enough, the morning after pill also causes miscarriage (the one that prevents the fertilized egg from attaching to the wall).

I object to people resorting this when they could just as well showcase a messy bed or a dog cut in half! Honestly, where's the creativity?

It wouldn't surprise me if there are herbs that can trigger a miscarriage. I just doubt that there's a way to do it safely or reliably.

The label "art" can be applied to anything, including the results of mental illness. And even the mentally ill can produce great art. But in this case? I think she's a very troubled individual.

The story's been repudiated.

This story did strike me as way too conveniently inkeeping with the Fox Nuisance portfolio to be for real.

There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

It's the press release that's the art piece. Or part of it, anyway. I thought it was a quite clever one, really.

Quote:
Statement by Helaine S. Klasky - Yale University, Spokesperson

New Haven, Conn. - April 17, 2008

Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman’s body.

She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art.

Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.

Yeah, the link has already been updated to reflect hoax.

Why am I tempted to treat "artists" like Britain handled criminals. Pick some island, send them all, and let them be "artsy" there. I don't mean painters, sculptors, writers, etc. I mean "artists", you know, people like this.

I know it's supposedly a hoax, but...

Here's a proposal: Before anyone like this person is taken seriously, make sure she takes a painting, writing, sculpting, acting, dancing or music test, something that proves she is indeed an accomplished artist at one of the major recognized arts.

Let her prove she is awesome at a classical art before she calls herself an Artíste.

Otherwise, she is just an attention whore, and the media is giving her all that she wants.

Artists like Picasso or Dalí earned the right to draw and create however the f*ck they wanted because they had the technique down when they were 12 years old. This person with the miscarriages? Just an idiot. Same with the dude that did Piss Christ, and the guy that let a dog starve to death, and the dorks with the toilets in the museum. Because as far as I know, doing creepy stuff you think up while you're taking lsd is not a recognized art.

I think the hippies got too carried away with the "Yeah, art is subjective and it's all about how it makes you feel man", and now we have this crap, and we don't have an equivalent of Pollock or Dalí for our times.

edit: Yeah, I guess this sort of bothers me, I'm not against abortion but this is just crappy.
