Mass Effect PC System Specs Released
Bioware just released the system specs for PC.
Recommended is Vista... I found that odd, specifically
because DX10 is not mentioned. I would recommend
XP in that case and not Vista. Maybe I am missing something.

As with all PC games, computer performance varies from system to system and adjustments can be made via the Config or through the in-game options to tailor your experience.

It says XP or Vista recommended. They're just copying what the minumum is.
Also, this is one of the few times I'm thankful that this is on UE3. I love BioWare games, but the engines they have built have been problematic on running their past games on dual-core systems.

12 freaking gigs?
Wow.

We're living at a time where these games have to account for all high-res textures at different resolutions and aspect ratios. I don't see it as too much of a big deal. Of all the parts of modern gaming computers, hard drives tend to be the cheapest value wise.

Wow I could run that on my laptop!

According to systemspecs.exe, my system has:
Windows: Windows XP5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2
Memory (RAM): 1471 MB
CPU Info: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MT-32
CPU Speed: 1788.7 MHz
Sound card: Conexant AMC Audio
Display Adapters: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series | ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M
Looks like I fall short in the CPU speed and graphics card dept.
Guess I'll just have to wait until I a) upgrade to a better PC or b) get a 360. Neither of which will be happening any time soon unless I can finally get a new job. *sad panda*

Theres no advantage of XP over Vista in games except for the following:
By default most Vista games with Directx10 support try to use Directx10 which can
cause reduced performance (with next to no image quality improvements). If you can turn this off through either command line or in game options you will be fine.
Company of Heroes is a good example of this, defaults to use Directx10 which it performs horribly with.
When I installed World in Conflict and updated to the latest patch it picked very high settings for my Radeon 2900XT but left the Directx10 off.
Bioshock I use with -directx9 in the commandline (I get better framrates than just turning off the dx10 option in game).
Hmmm, delete porn...

Would you have a second option?

My laptop might be able to run this.

Ouch. I might have to play this on the 360 then (when I finally get one), which is a shame, as the PC version seems like it will benefit from a later release date. Any idea if they're adding any story or mission related content to the PC version?

When they say 2.4GHZ+, does that mean single core or core duo or what?
I've got a 1.8 core duo (not core duo2 ... no idea what the difference is) anybody out there have a clue as to whether I can run this?
Or is it time to buy a console or three?
The PC version is getting the download content of the 360 version for free. Everything else is the same other than the new PC-style interface and ability to manage your companions better.

I did that to make room for more porn

'...
Leading video game developer BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), has announced that “Bring Down the Sky,” the first piece of downloadable content for the award-winning space epic Mass Effect™, will be available for PC gamers to download free* of charge when Mass Effect for the PC releases on May 28, 2008 in North America and June 6, 2008 in Europe.
Fully optimized for the PC, “Bring Down the Sky” is the first in a series of planned downloadable content that will further expand the Mass Effect story and universe. It includes a new uncharted world that introduces the deadly Batarian alien race, approximately 90 minutes of new gameplay and an original soundtrack.
Batarian extremists have hijacked a mobile asteroid station in the Asgard system, setting it on a collision course with the nearby colony world of Terra Nova. Only Commander Shepard can save the millions of innocent civilians before the asteroid completes its deadly descent.
Originally released for the Xbox 360™ videogame and entertainment system, “Bring Down the Sky” has received critical acclaim as one of the “must have” downloadable expansion packs. Mass Effect has also received critical acclaim throughout the world with more than 80 awards including Console Game of the Year and Role-Playing Game of the Year.
The “Bring Down the Sky” downloadable content for PC will be available at the launch of Mass Effect for the PC, and will be free of charge to registered BioWare community members.

So let me get this straight. First, the PC version will no doubt cost almost half of what the 360 version did. AND now they get a free download of what cost a 360 owner. Well I guess the 360 folks are still ahead money-wise in that they don't have to throw hundreds of dollars at getting their machine upgraded to play it...still...
These specs seem very reasonable to me. My compy can easily run it...and its going on 4 years now.

Yay!!! I can run it on my laptop. Glad I upgraded my hard drive to 200 gig

Would it be reasonable to expect the Bioshock demo to give a reasonable indication of how Mass Effect will run? They're on the same engine, and seem to have near identical minimum specs.

By and large I would say yes. I have the PC versions of Bioshock and Gears of War and both run about the same (E6850, 8800 GTS, 2GB RAM, Vista).
