Is he planning on continuing his Greenspeak columns online? Maybe posting up an archive of them as 1up.com is doing with the Tom vs. Bruce articles? I really enjoyed reading those and would love to see him continue them.

Do you think the challenges of appealing to an entirely on-line market will be greater or less than working in print media? How do you intend to compete with existing online media outlets for gamers' attention? That is, what will you do differently (the established formula being reviews with number ratings, cheats, hints, tips, walkthroughs, etc.)?

Will we be seeing more conversational style previews like that Fallout 3 one? Because that was probably the most interesting preview I've ever read.

Will the GFW/PC section on the 1up site have it's own identity, or will it look like every other section on the site? Without the mag, they really need to separate how they present their articles from the rest of 1up.

Has Microsoft ever asked for input on how to improve the GFW system? I'm guessing no by how they talk on the podcast, still would like an official answer.

Also what are the benefits of still keeping the GFW name now that all the articles are going online? I believe they said it would help the magazine initially because Microsoft would muscle it onto more store shelves.

Totally agree. Of all the FO3 preview coverage last week, 1Up's was the most interesting.

What changes are you making in regards to editorial process are you considering? With the rapid publication of web content as it is writtten, are you guys making any changes to prevent another Neverwinter Nights 2 debacle (that thing where the D&D hater reviewed a D&D game)?

The GFW crew has joked in the past about making a non-gaming podcast, any chance you might actually start it? You guys have always taken some fascinating tangents into the realm of TV, movies, books, comics, etc which could be an interesting complement to 1UP.com.

Are you guys going to still accept non-staff articles & reviews?

Any new surprises?

Yes. Yes. Please iterate that this was an excellent piece - Sean and Jeff have an awesome dynamic on air and it really came across in writing too - they need to exploit this.

Agreed - but especially because 1UP's layout is a cluttered mess of stuff - they really need something more elegant and simplified. The content is kind of everywhere.

So essentially I'm just iterating other people's questions, but those two are exactly what I was thinking.

Oh, and a comment - he mentioned that the pageclicks on "Tom vs Bruce" were low - maybe instead of calling it "Tom vs Bruce #4" in the link, they should have the game name be more evident.

I know it's nothing to do with the current issues that the GFW crew are facing, but my question is which game are the whole surviving GFW podcast crew looking forward to this year? Last year was pretty packed and i see a number of big console titles coming in 2008 but not many i'm really interested in on the PC - any unusual titles he may have heard about that aren't on many people's radars?

1. I would like to reiterate this. I can not abide the epileptic inducing layout of that website.

2. Will we be seeing any greater presence of PC gaming coverage in EGM?

3. What are the plans of the online only version of GFW regarding the articles we began seeing in the print version over this past year (not just from the remaining editors)?

4. The podcast is quite successful. Any plans for a video version -- can you see any benefit to having one?

5. Now that you do not have to put out a monthly magazine, is your work day considerably less busy? Does providing content to a website significantly reduce the workload, or is there not really that much difference? If it is less busy as a result, do you see more time for delving deeper into the gaming industry?

6. Moot point now, but before the closing of the magazine, had GFW moved to less than 12 issues a year?

I think, just as a broader stroke, what of our favorite aspects of the magazine will be making it onto the site, Tom Vs Bruce is on there, but will we still be getting Greenspeak, Crisis on Infinite Servers, and so forth? Will you still be putting up those group pieces, like the Three Wishes article?

I went to GFW because, unlike all of your on and offline competition, you did more than just write the easy articles. PC Gamer might as well been called "Previews and Reviews for our advertisers." Will you keep putting up the great, unique, editorial content?

Also, could this be the final stroke to get the CGW/GFW archives online?

Lastly, what will the podcast be called?

I'm partial to 'The Brodeo'. After all they only talk about gaming for maybe 50% of the podcast, and that is not a slam of any sort. The non-gaming banter is usually pretty funny..................

Gotta be Jeff Green

There were many instances in the podcast when they did not go into a topic because it was in the magazine, e.g. The best of 2007 discussion. Now, will there still be some holding back to pimp the website? What does he feel the role of the podcast should be?

So did microsoft completely wash their hands of the magazine or are they still involved?

- How come this decision was made without even you knowing of this? (stopping of the printed version that is)
Doesn't this show lack of respect? A full office working its ass off only to hear 'uuuhh we are not going to be publishing this anymore...' Shouldn't at least the chief editor be involved in this proces?

- Not even a goodbye edition, how does that feel?

- Your job has been cut back considerably of course. Any chance of working for a real paper publishing magazine? (or get GJW to do this )

- The name 'CGW' was traded for 'GFW'. There were two major points why this still was a good thing, considering dropping such well known name. One thing was, the editorial staff would be independent (as they already were) .... the other thing was that MS would push the sales of the magazine in paper. This by putting it out there with all the games etc etc etc. Now there is no printed magazine. Did MS fail in your opinion? And there for maybe also Ziff Davis?

- Instead of switching to another print magazine, maybe another career path that you are thinking of?

I liked the "cover story" style James Meilke used to do (panzer dragoon one). Will the GFW staff do similar things?

Also, the 1up Search only seems to look for main game pages. Can that be expanded so we can search for writer-names, and article names?

Could you ask Jeff to elaborate on his comments in the recent GFW podcast regarding EDGE and it's covers?

He mentioned that their higher costs and subscription base meant they have less need to compete for newsstand presence, but I find the opposite to be true. I've been picking up EDGE for the past few years at the newsstand (although I should really get a subscription), in part because of the awesome visual design. EDGE really sticks out on the stand amongst all the other gaming magazines due to the clean, uncluttered and stark design, and lack of extraneous slogans.

In short, why couldn't US print gaming magazine get away with using better design rather than overloading the cover?

Can you be any more specific as to why the magazine had to be shut down? was the readership not there? did microsoft pull their funding? not enough money for those bastards? as a quick side note when I read Jeff's blog I had just finished reading the Sims 3 issue that I picked up off the news stand and was entering my info for a subscription......would Jeff and the other GFW staff ever think of starting a new PC gaming magazine? perhaps with a different company other than Ziff? or are all plans for online content at this point?

Yeah, I really think you have to ask him about the PC site having its own style/identity. If it is going to be digital only I think they should hire that art staff back and do thing for the PC section.

That conversational preview was very very good.

I think they were trying to say that the low circulation and reputation that lets them charge more per issue makes up for the fact that they aren't prominently featured on as many newstands as mags like GamesTM and Game Informer are. America is so much larger geographically, combine that with less of an awareness to the type of reader they were trying to attract, and the fact that people are less likely to be willing to pay for media content, and that leads to a magazine to a need for more newsstand presence, which leads to a need for larger circulation, which leads to a need for more advertising dollars in a medium where advertising isn't very attractive anymore.

Which I guess is where my question comes in, although in hindsight it may be navel-gazing nonsense:

You vocalized a lot of ideas in several interviews a couple years back on how you felt gaming magazines should try to embrace their differences to online media, instead of making futile attempts to compete with it. While some of these ideas came to fruition, it seemed some changes you implemented moved very conservatively or even was retracted. Examples include the in-depth, scoreless reviews and the unorthodox feature articles that sometimes touched on political or cultural issues within the gaming landscape, both of which seemed to receive a lot of negative, even hostile, responses from your readers who wanted meat-and-potatoes previews and reviews. Knowing what you do now about the fate of the magazine, do you wish that you had experimented with the concept of a "PC gaming magazine" more and worried about alienating your established subscriber base less? Do you think GFW would have gotten a better reception to the ideas and a wider audience if, like EDGE or The Escapist, you didn't have to deal with pre-conceived notions of what type of magazine people might have assumed it was?

I would think the first rule of PR is to ignore forum people, because they vacillate between crazy and liar. - Elysium

Any thoughts about doing more audio content besides the main podcast?

For example another weekly show that just reads and discusses articles written by the PC staff, with a focus on the author's perspective, rather than the usual roundtable.
