Sony Asks: Does Hackin' That PSP Make You Feel Like A "Big Man"? Huh? HUH??
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 - 11:37pm
Apparently Sony sent out this survey to try and figure out why people are hacking their PSP's.
An honest attempt to reach out to the community? Going to meet people halfway? Listen to what the consumer actually WANTS?
Hell no.
Take a look at these questions:

Could 90% of those possibly be more leading/insulting/loaded?

The sad thing is that those questions were probably generated after focus groups were conducted. I can just picture the kids that made those comments.

Some of them are even misleading. I don't believe it illegal to hack it. It might be illegal to use some software with it but thats all.
How about, booting games off the memory sick is TRUE portability and a camera should have been built in instead of the useless UMD?
Man, I don't hack my psp, but after reading that questionaire I kinda feel like it just to piss sony off. Wow, what an absolutly awful thing for them to publish.
You almost get the feeling they wanted to include something like:
"I hack PSPs to get the money I need to fund my heroin, ice and hooker addictions."
or
"I hack my PSP because I hate God, America, and puppies."

Damn straight, Cod.
I wish I got that questionnaire. I want to put a big fat "1" on the "I won't get caught" question, and send them a link to my guide for them to visit.
(Hey, why didn't I get one? This "Gamer Advisory Panel" card indicates I should be consulted on these matters!)

That said, this is bull. If I want to crack the case and fiddle with a device I own in order to expand its functionality, then that's what I'll do. If they'd stop deliberately denying features that the PSP can easily handle, they might have a case, because at that point modding would be useless for anything other than playing pirated games. As it is, modding a PSP is incredibly useful for any number of reasons. And they can kiss my ass.
Disclaimer: I don't have a PSP, modded or otherwise.

No joke. This should be an option.
"I hack my PSP because I paid for the hardware and I should be able to do anything I want with it, as long as it's not illegal."

It makes me want to buy a PSP just to hack it. Buy it, hack it, sell it, rinse and repeat.

I haven't even considered hacking my PSP. I guess I'm too lazy. If there was something I'd really benefit from it, sure. It's weird though. A couple of years ago, I was all over this stuff, but now I haven't even done the digging to find out what would be possible. The "games off memory sticks" thing sounds cool... hmmm.

Reasons to hack your PSP:
* Games from memory stick - turn lengthy UMD load times into absolutely nothing, and prolong battery life from not having the juice-sucking UMD motor spinning
* Improve performance of some PSP games by running PSP CPU at 333 MHz (Wipeout @ 333 MHz is just sinful)
* Play tons of old games with emulators (like I like to say, it's the best GBA I've ever owned - and having LucasArts adventures in portable form is ten kinds of awesome)
* Play any PSX game, not just the few that Sony chooses to sell you on the PlayStation Store
* Have a way of restoring your PSP yourself should you suffer a bad firmware flash
* The hard part has been taken care of for you.
To me, it's crazy to own a PSP and not race to hack it. An unhacked PSP is just... gimped. UMD load times by themselves are all the reason anyone should need.

I would think they would appreciate "The ability to hack my PSP allowed me to justify the purchase of a system that had no games I really wanted to play".
$200 for the ability to play Monkey Island on the go is an easy win, for me.
This thread is totally broken - it's an anti-Sony thread by SommerMatt!
I hack my PSP for the reasons Legion mentioned. Frankly, it works better that way, even for legitimate purposes.

Thanks Mystic. Almost made me spit my coffee AND wake up the little one.
While not a PSP owner, I now want to buy one so I can hack it. I like feeling like a rebel ... and hey, if it impresses others, WIN!

I hacked my PSP because the regular update failed and semi bricked it. Called customer support and they basically told me to f*ck off you broke it, it's not our fault.
Got the unbricker and went to M33. The PSP is so much more fun when it's hacked.
Then I hacked my brothers because the UMD laser stopped reading disks.

Ah, Sony. If they had any sense at all they'd do what MS did with the original Xbox, and tactfully turn a blind eye to the hax. Surely they realize that it is one of the main selling points of their hardware.

I was gifted an unloved Dell Axim. SCUMM ran just fine on it, and traveling touch screen Monkey Island goodness was enjoyed.
Just FYI for those who might have an old PocketPC lying around.

I'd also like to point out that a lot of CFW hacks have been done FIRST, and then ADDED to the official firmware.
Like the 333mhz option. CFW unlocked it, Sony finally allows it... but ONLY to developers. CFW also unlocked the 480x272 screen resolution on created videos, homebrew gave us internet radio... Sony has added some crappy "play any PS1 game through remote play on your PS3" thing, but the ability to run PS1 games YOU OWN is also a fabulous use of CFW. The Sony Store is GARBAGE. None of the big third party hits have been released, and the US store is much worse than the offerings at the Japanese store.
