Hmm i don't see how this would be that much different from getting any hair trimmer and using a specific attachment to get a uniform height. I bought a clipper for like 12 bucks that I use on my beard, and it could do the tope of my head no problem, if I decided to go super short.

Agreed. I bought a clipper and have used that for about 2 years now. Its more than paid for itself and I can keep my hair short without having to make trips to the barber every other week.
That looks really cool, actually. I've been buzzing my own hair for the last 5+ years with a pair of clippers I got from Frys for $12. It's not always pleasant due to the shape of heads and the shape of clippers. I make sure to remind my wife of this sometimes when a video game purchase comes up. $15 x once a month at Great Clips x 5 years = money saved.
Plus she likes the way it looks better. But the clippers are definitely getting long in the tooth.
My only question is this. Can anyone tell from this ad if it does no-guard level clipping? I don't use a guard. I sometimes even take a razor to it. So this would be awesome, however of now use to me if it doesn't cut it as close as possible.

I've tried using beard trimmers, and they are not good for hair at all. They don't cover enough, so you get a pretty uneven cut. I had problems with my wife doing it, let along trying it myself. I think this looks like a much better way of doing the crew cut, especially doing it yourself.
I am so getting one of these. My wife uses some cheap clippers (#1 guard) on me. It always feels awkward when I try to do my own hair. This is perfect for letting me take over the task. Thanks for the tip, Edwin.
I've got a DIY hair-cutting kit that I've been using for over 4 years. I put on a 3/4 inch attachment, do most of my head, then put on the ear attachments to get around them. Then I have my girlfriend give it a once over for any spots I missed and to trim up around the ears/neck.

Actually the clipper I have is a hair clipper. I just use it for my beard because of the coverage issues you mentioned. I don't really like the small beard trimmers as they take too long to trim my entire face. I also had my old roommate cut my hair with this trimmer as well, and it did great.

Instead, I offer the Hot Wheels Razor, the Headblade:
I can't stand those things. Two blades isn't enough to shave my face, let alone my head. I use the same razor I do on my face; a Gilette Fusion. 5 blades of sheer hair removal, with that nifty reverse blade for edging around the ears(I have hairs that grow in the crook where my ear meets my head).
As for this thingy:

$43.95 after shipping and should be here in 8 to 12 days.
All I can say is that if it works as horribly as it appears to in that video clip, DO NOT WANT. Dude seemed like he took freaking forever to cut his hair with that thing. I'll stick to my $20 barbershop grade hair clippers with no guard for when I want to reshave my head after being lazy for a few days.
I had long hair for years and years, then the older guy who sat near me grew out his pony tail. I looked at him, thought "I'm going to forget to get a haircut before I turn into that guy" and went and got a professional haircut for the first time in eight or so years.

Wait, a 2 minute, overdramatized (and thus likely extended) cut's too long for you? Damn, must be nice. That'd take a good 5 minutes (if I did it myself) or 10 minutes (if I went to a barber) off my time.
Thanks Edwin, I might just end up ordering one of these.

With these implements, how do you make sure that the hair growth edge and your neck/back of the head is trimmed neatly? I think you'd still need someone to do it properly.

Cut it short enough that's not an issue But yeah, for detailed work like that you'd likely need someone to at least spot check the back of your neck.

Since I go to the barber for me short cut, they use a straight razor to trim the edges. I think you would still need someone else to clean this up, if you want it to look good.
It's kinda surprising how many other self-hair-cutters there are here. I typically just use a cheap $15 pair of clipper with a #2 guard and have my girlfriend do a double-check. I don't think I've gone to get a haircut from a barber in 7-8 years.
Thanks for the suggestion Edwin. I'll have to check it out when it comes time to get a new set of clippers.
I don't shave my head very often anymore (used to do it daily). Now I just use a rechargeable beard and mustache trimmer with the guard off every few days. That's short enough that there's no need have someone square up the back. I just have to make sure I get the narrow runners that go down the neck to the end of the trapezius so that I don't have funky trails.

When it shows him hitting the same area 3-4 times as many times as I do with my clippers(single pass with my hair as long as his was, to a much, much closer cut than he got), yes, that is far too long. Especially given that the thing costs 2.5 times what my clippers, which I already have, mind you do.
Where was this for the 4 years that I kept my hair really short! I had to go to a barber every 2 weeks.

I usually keep my hair at a long 2/ short 3 guard.
I've let it grow out for the past two months and I am not pleased.
