So are there distance limitations on how far you can trade? I wanted to send a ship to Tannhauser but I only get the diplomacy option, whereas I get the send goods option for dudes on my island.

I believe the more you upgrade your Trade Depot (?) the greater your range.

If there are distance limitations, we should try to colonize a group of islands in close proximity so we can all trade with each other.

Built my trading post yesterday, so that isn't it. I think transporting goods is limited by the range of your trading post, I can send goods to anyone on my island or to settlements on islands next to my own; but I don't have the option to send goods to any settlements further away than that. Considering that the current state of my trading post only has a range limit of 1, I think that is the driving factor.

In order to be able to pick and choose what and whom you trade with you need a market, and also to set up trades you need an Embassy which is received after researching Foreign Cultures in the Seafaring trade.
I have found there is a lot of desire to run and set up a civilization like that, but the restriction of these research times slows you down considerably.
I pass the time by pillaging other villages on the island. So far I have pillaged successfully twice against two civilizations with troops. Not very sporting I know, but trying to get a feel.

You cannot start harvesting your resource until wealth is researched correct? If so I should be free to start harvesting wine in a few hours...

'zactly right. However, while wood is harvested at a 1:1 rate to the workers you set to the task, the other island resource has a 2:1 ratio. So if you set 10 workers to harvesting wine, you will be taking in 5 units of wine an hour.
I have been raided. I lost 200 wood.
Apparently 5 slingers and a level 1 wall isn't enough defense.
