Games For Windows Magazine Moves Online
The end of an era, but the start of a new one.

This morning the 1UP Network, in conjunction with Microsoft, announced that Games for Windows: The Official Magazine will be transitioning from a print publication to an online-exclusive destination here on 1UP.com. The move is being done to help focus our efforts to where PC gamers spend most of their time: on their PCs. Over the next few weeks 1UP will be ramping up its efforts to become the premiere destination for PC gaming content on the web.
So... any thoughts on this? I hate to say that I rather enjoy my digital versions of GameDev Magazine and the Escapist's format but I am really going to miss having a print version of this magazine handy.

The more I think about this, the more it really really sucks.

I'm still addicted to print media. This blows like none other.
I really need a tablet PC or something.

Yeah, it sucks. Sad to see it go.

Tons of console-inclusive and console-focused magazines, including Next Generation, OPM, and GMR, have become worm food, so let's hope no one draws such inane conclusions.

They don't even get a "final issue". That blows. Now EDGE is the only gaming magazine for me to read.
Your favourite game is over-rated.
I wasn't even enjoying it that much lately, but my damn subscription goes for another year. Have they mentioned what they're going to do about that?

This is a sad day. I just reupped my own subscription last month. I enjoy both print and online for different reasons.

Yeah, Game Informer is only still around because of its iron lung, GameStop. They'll be losing me this year, as I have found that buying used games from Amazon is all-around a better option.
As sad as it is to see the print magazine go, the on-demand nature of online publications that cost the end-user nothing is hard to beat. GFW Magazine will not be the last to fall, by far. I think they're tremendously lucky to be backed up by a network like 1UP. I wish good luck to them all.

Online isn't very conducive to bathroom literature for me.

gahhh, I love print magazines. And I still rather read a book in printed form than digital form
I really enjoyed GFW magazine too
Sigh... Best luck to the crew nonetheless.

You can transition your subscription to EGM or PC Mag.

f*ckin hell. It is an end of an era.

I'm sort of shocked. I don't know anything more than anyone else at this point. I'm happy to see that the Sheawns, Ryan and Jeff seem to still have a gig (at least, Jeff's blog suggests that), but obviously talking to us freelancers is going to be a wee bit further down on the scale of things to do.
I feel like this is all Lara and My fault. We've killed THREE magazines now. We'll never work in this town again.
Sigh. Is it too early to start drinking?

sh*te. It may be curmudgeonly, but I like the printed format. I'm on a trip right now, and I've got GFW in my bag to graze through at 35000 feet. Kuddles said it, guess I'm subscribing to Edge now.

Yes, rabbit, please work for Maxim.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.
Exactly, write for Maxim and FHM too while you're at it.

Jesus. Well. Um. Hmm. There goes that. Crap.
Seriously. It's like we're the Goodjer kiss of death. I'm beginning to think they just don't like us, and would rather fold the magazine than hire the advancing GWJ horde.

It really sucks, I prefer the printed format but it was getting harder and harder to find here
I will support them but it sucks they are now online only version, hopefully the podcast will continue.

Damn. Not a good day for PC gamers. I might not always have agreed with everything in the mag, but they were always a class act, with a strong editorial vision and a willingness to take risks regardless of advertiser pressure.
I hope they take consolation in the fact that they're an innocent victim of poor corporate financial choices and seismic changes in how people receive information. The demise of gaming magazines is only the tip of the iceberg for print periodicals as a whole.
This is depressing. After reading PC Gamer for years, I jumped ship to CGW a few years back when I could take PCG's declining quality no longer. I've been a loyal reader since then and I am sad that I won't be finding any more copies in my mailbox.

Screw you guys, I love Maxim and FHM, what's wrong with you?
Edit: Wow, I didn't know GFW was Computer Gaming World. Maybe that helped kill the magazine.

The worst part to me is that I know GFW was a paying gig for a number of Goodjers, as Rabbit and Kat have both indicated above. I always made sure to read their stuff; in fact, in a recent issue I was reading an article that started talking about text adventures and I immediately thought, "Lara wrote this, didn't she?" Sure enough, she did!
Edit: I take some of the blame. I'm somehow still mooching off the free subscription offer.

How are you to blame? Magazines make their money mostly because of advertising revenue, don't they?
Anyway, hope you guys that worked there don't have any trouble.

From Jeff's blog it looks like they fired the art dept. So no chance of the look & feel moving to 1UP. Bah.

Great, so I recently subscribed to GFW but now get to change it to one of two trash publications I've purposefully avoided. I'd rather get the outstanding months paid back which I've written and asked for. I didn't subscribe to EGM or PC Mag. This really sucks because it has in a varied way confirmed the other half of one of my bold predictions for the year. I predicted that ZD would go bankrupt (which they did but for a different reason) and that at least one of the game group magazines would die which this basically is. Really sad to see this as GFW was one of the best print mags in the gaming enthusiast genre.
