Behold you vile Wii haters, the day of your judgment is fast approaching. Repent and all will be forgiven.

I usually don't preorder, but gamestop is having a deal where you get a free wheel if you do. So I did. Beats paying $15 for a piece of plastic.

What's the release date on this??
Currently on a gaming hiatus until the fall.
Does wiggling the wii-mote/plastic steering wheel really give you the same precision as an analog stick or a D-pad?
Never used a Wii, so I'm asking honestly.

I'm not sure we can answer that for sure before playing, but in general its very sensitive to motion, so I would expect it to actually be more precise (then again, I've always hated both d-pad's and the sticks).

April 27. Yes, that's a Sunday.
I guess it may depend on the programmer, but I know "excite truck" used the exact same mechaninc.

Mario Kart will let you use ANY control scheme you wish a la brawls.
I was under the impression that the wheel came with the game whether you preorder or not.

This made me laugh, and my wife roll her eyes. I tip my hat, good sir
As for controls, if it handles like excite truck, then the wiimote shouldn't be horrible to use. Otherwise, gamecube controller all the way

Soo... I was playing it last night.. and my first play session I decided to use the default controls, knowing well that I would quickly be changing to a mote-chuck setup or GCN controller.
However, to my surprise, the game plays great with the tilt controls. I had feared we would see an excitetruck style implementation with the cart spinning all around and constantly having to over steer to correct problems. Fortunately this is not the case. They finally implemented tilt steering that actually mimics the analog control to which we are all accustomed. In fact, I won 1st place in every race I ran.
However, having played my fair share of "kart" before, I turned off the automatic sliding in favor of controlling my power sliding myself. This was the only problem I found with the tilt steering. While most of the time things worked exactly as I had planned, I often found my kart sliding facing the opposite direction of a turn. It seems like something that I can fix as I know it's simply that while I didn't realize it the controller was tilted ever so slightly in the wrong direction as I jumped for my slide. Even as I was in the air and changed the tilt of my controller the game didn't really recognize that and I found myself sliding in a straight line right off the course.
Overall, I can recommend the tilt steering method and am looking forward to playing more of the game. I just know it's something I'll have to get used to doing. But as much fun as I had playing the game, I don't see that as being a difficult thing to get past.

Have you had a chance to play around with the multi-player?

If you're really keen to see Mario Kart, someone recorded two hours of it in action:

The link is worth a click even if you don't want to watch the video, since it lists all of the tracks that appear in the game. Of course, if you're wary of track spoilers, don't click

I picked this up yesterday, and it's been a lot of fun so far -- the gameplay tweaks (new drifting system, tricks to boost on jumps, bikes, etc.) all seem to work well, and there's a huge selection of tracks on offer. I've nearly finished working my way up through 50cc and 100cc so I'll be on to 150cc soon.
The tilt controls with the crappy plastic wheel surprised me by not being awful, though I had the same problem with the game drifting the wrong way that lancejt described above. It seemed to get better with practice, but I soon went back to an analogue stick. I tried the Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and Wavebird, and the Wavebird seemed best overall, though they were all great.
I haven't played online yet, but the Mario Kart Channel with its leaderboards and downloadable ghosts is a nice addition, and there seems to be some way to invite your Wii friends to become Mario Kart friends, though I haven't tried that yet.

Penny Arcade of the day.
I didn't actually laugh. Instead I simply yelled at my screen, "I know, I hate it when that happens!"

Got this in today. So far I really like it. It's basically Mario Kart DS on a bigger screen and prettier graphics. I played an online battle with a bunch of Brits because it couldn't find any people in my region....guess cuz offical street date isn't till tomorrow. The online is definately no xbox live, but it's alot better than Nintendo's online offerings up till now. Basically if you like Mario Kart you'll love this. If you're one of those people who've never really had thing for MK, don't expect this to change your mind.

I will be playing all kinds of Mario Kart Wii for two days, and then will leap into GTA IV with great enthusiasm.
Mario Kart is possibly the best party game ever, and it's certainly been my favorite.

Suckers. We've had it for weeks.

It appears to me that this game also makes use of the moronic practice of generating friend codes for every game.

The game is incredible.

Aside from the friends code thing, I'm impressed. The wife and I paired up for some random online battles and cooperatively kicked some Canadian ass. Hopefully the ability to play with big groups (10+) will encourage some GWJ nights (with Xbox Live chat, for those with 360s).

Make with the friend code, Staats!

Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles
I gotta get some work done first! Soon though.

I played some online earlier today as well, and I was surprised by how well it worked, if a little simplistic. Like Staats, I think it's a bit silly for the game to require a separate code than the actual console one to play online, but what can you do.
Anyway, my code: 0473-8174-1509

hey all. Picked mine up earlier. Its been a fun game. A few differences that are good some that aren't but over all is Mario Kart.
Add me into the list.

My code is 12 digits. Just type in any 12 digits and then yell my name into the Wii. That should work.
I'll get my actual code later on, but first I want to say holy crap I've been having fun with this today. This may be my favorite Mario Kart, yet. The only thing I don't like is that I don't see any way of customizing the Battle Mode. What if I don't want to play 6 Vs. 6 for 5 minutes? What if I want classic Battle Mode? Do I need to unlock it?
