Saint's Row 2 with... Gary Busey?

That is a creepy dude.
I dunno why, but I'm more excited to play Saint's Row 2 than GTA IV. GTA looks gritty and realistic and immersive but Saint's Row 2 just looks fun.

Funny you mention this. I was just watching those Saint's Row videos with Gary Busey. I can't tell you how badly I don't want to play it anymore.
That is one demented SOB. Too many bounces off the pavement I would hazard to guess.

How about it, Jack? Would you like a shot at the title?

C'mon, the first one was endlessly entertaining.

I'm just bugged that they've got the release dates for Saints Row 2 and Mercenaries 2 scheduled a week apart.
I figure that a venn diagram of the audiences for the two games forms a concentric circle.
Hahah, too true. You would think two sandbox genre titles would try to stay as far away from each other as possible on the release schedule.

Meh. I'm looking forward to Mercenaries 2. I thought Saint's Row was really well done, but I'm tired of being a criminal all the time. I wish these companies would focus on something other than the bad guy for a change.
Crackdown really showed potential. You could essentially take that concept and apply it to any superhero. Crackdown proved to me there is a way to do something like a Batman sandbox game or any superhero really. I liked other outings, like Spider-Man or Hulk, but they were limited in their own way and too focused on missions.
I really think this genre can grow beyond GTA wannabe-ism.

I think Prototype comes out around the same time too, but I've got a bad feeling about that game.

High hopes for Prototype, while also not holding my breath. Does that make sense?

Yeah. The recent media has made me much more interested in this game. I'm hoping that it'll have some of that vertigo inducing mobility that made Crackdown so much fun.
But, I'll be skeptical until I play a demo. Also, Prototype's art direction seems a bit dull.
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was one of my favorite Xbox games so I will give Prototype the benefit of the doubt for now. These guys know how to make you feel large-and-in-charge in a superpowered urban setting.
The original Saints Row did a lot of things right. The biggest compliment I can give it is that I actually finished the game. I still haven't finished GTA III or Vice City.

What I like about Gary Busey is that while he is patently insane, like the kind of insane that makes you think he's going to jump over a desk like a leopard and claw your throat out, he's also pretty good about laughing at his own insanity. His appearances on Entourage were HIGH-larious.
Saint's Row, while proficient in most areas, definitely seemed soulless, to me. Too much adherence to formula, too much manufactured "urban" crap, too many star voice actors, too calculated an approach, overall. Saint's Row 2 looks to be at least trying to differentiate itself.
But GTA4 looks to be the first GTA I might actually like. So... there that is. The first Saint's Row sold reasonably well because of its status as the first next-gen GTA-alike of any real merit. This one doesn't have that, doesn't have great mindshare from the first game, and is releasing in the same decade as GTA4. I smell... flop.

I don't think the choice is binary, Morrolan. I think a /lot/ of people are going to get both (like me!). In fact, given what I know about both games I'd say that Saint's Row 2 is probably going to have more that appeals to the traditional "GTA demographic." Namely, more "gangsta" stuff and more over-the-top violence.
Me, I'm a character customization whore.

Yeah, I've never quite gotten that reaction from gamers. If I see two good games in the same genre, I'll get both of them. This is even easier if they're not even released in the same month.
Granted, having more than one does dilute the market, but there is nothing saying you can't have both unless you just tire of that sort of game.

I plan to get both. The character customization and more importantly CAR customization of Saints Row was fantastic and I'll be coming back for more. GTA 4 looks to have fantastic story and plenty to do in Liberty City, and I am a sucker for open world action games. 2008 looks like it will be a bumper year for my favorite genre.
