Can someone explain to me what the hell I'm supposed to do to defeat the first boss? I must have hit him with my weapon about 100 times and nothing's happening.
God, why do I always have to understand some developer's dream logic just to know how to play a game?
The first time I played the game, I guess I had an outdated version of Flash and the game was playing at a ridiculous speed while the ending credits music played over top and I thought it was one of those surreal, indecipherable, artsy games. As clever as the game is, I almost preferred it that way.
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
The game plays impossibly fast on my machine. The little guy moves so fast that I don't even see him move; he's just suddenly bumped against the opposite wall.

I'm reminded of what Certis once said in a fit of Portal-hate. Putting a cute song at the end doesn't make it a great game.
A fit of what? I didn't understand what you wrote there...
Don't you understand, Cliff? We put a chainsaw on a machine gun! That's it! It doesn't get more awesome than that! We've peaked, man! We've peaked! - ctrl-alt-del on Gears of War 2

Game of the Year. People complain about games being too short, but You Have to Burn the Rope proves that a great game can be packed into a tiny package. Lesser games would have padded out the experience, but not You Have to Burn the Rope. They know what pacing is, and they know what gameplay is. It's not a thousand different options to choose from mapped in an intuitive manner. It's honing in on a single mechanic, polishing it to a shine, and not over-using it.

The cute song at the end of Portal was the culmination of a fantastic, wonderfully crafted experience.
Just because it had a cute song didn't mean that's what made it great, but that was the cherry on top.

Yeah, that conversation's been had many, many times and that's the consensus. I was just suggesting that the fact that THIS game has a cute song doesn't make it all that fantastic.

Exactly. What makes this game fantastic is the rope burning.

I don't think you're seeing the genius at work here. You have to learn to use the environment to your advantage, finding emergent uses of advanced physical simulations. The rope reacts properly to getting burned by weakening its tensile strength to the point that it can no longer hold the weight of the chandelier, providing a new path for lateral-thinking players to take towards victory. And think of how much it helps immersion to have the player, probably a weak-armed nerd, play a character on screen who can't throw an axe hard enough to break a rope, requiring the use of a torch!

Don't forget the realistic stick physics. Wood burns, just like it would in real life! They made it that way, and it just makes sense.

Despite the title, you don't have to burn the rope unless you feel like it. I just sat in the hall for a few hours.
Thanks Nyles, you've just injected a hefty bolus of replay value into this gem of a flash title.

Well that was a good way to kill 60 seconds.

Did you listen to the ending song? It's pretty cute, and easy adds another two minutes or so.
This reminds me of Pick up the Phone Booth and Die. I love wierd little minimalist games.
