The length/condensing is my main issue, the only hope is to something similar the Jackson did for the LOTR make 4-4.5 hour movies and pare it down to 2-2.5 hours for the theatrical release.
The voiceovers of the Lynch film suck, but a lot of what was being read like that are the thoughts of the characters in the book and in many cases it's not like they're in a situation to say to the camera in soliquy, "I really like this duke!"
As a fan of the books after the original (the first one is good don't get me wrong) I liked the way that SciFi handled the second two books in a single miniseries with their second round.

I really liked the SciFi series. You need the book as a companion though. A lot of things go unexplained or are confusing without the text fresh in your mind.

I don't see why we need another version of Dune. I though the SciFi channel nailed it with the mini-series. And the David Lynch version wasn't related to the book at all, story, look, or feel. I would have rather SciFi continued the series with God Emperor, all the way through to Chapterhouse. Ah well, I'll probably go see it anyways.

See, I love the source material so much, I'm happy to have it made over and over again. I'd be happy to see a version of Dune released every year, just like I'd be happy to see a new, different interpretation of Hamlet every year. I loved the Lynch movie for what it was (crazy Lynchiness). I loved the SF versions for what they were (somewhat plodding but lovingly crafted versions). I'm all for a big budget Paramount version that oversells the ecological parts and spends lots of time on CGI sandworms. It's all good to me.
As long as hollywood stops raping Philip K Dick's ouvre for a second to violate someone else's works for a bit, I'm happy. Well, not happy, but slightly less sad.

That's the one where Leto is a giant worm right? So was he or was he not an abomination?

I believe, if I remember correctly, his method of overcoming the stigmata of abomination and possession was to turn into some kind of hive-mind of himself and his memories. But yes, God Emperor is when the transformation that started in Children of Dune with him getting the sandtrout skin is shown to have turned him into a full-sized man-worm thing. He's still got like vestigial human bits, like his face and supposedly some useless arms... but he was, at that point, essentially the only worm left on Arrakis.

I believe he did that to foster the greatest jihad of mankind to overthrow him and overthrow mankinds dependance on spice. He wanted to be assassinated and be so reviled and hated that mankind would never be so co-dependant on a leader again. So he felt he had to live a very, very long time and the only way to do that while maintaining a monopoly on spice was to become the only living sandworm.

I'm crossing my fingers but at this point I'm taking a wait and see point of view and will first screen it at a matinee.

Outside of the g*damned "weirding modules" and overuse of voice over narration, I liked Lynch's version. I think he nailed the baroque visual style.
I'll hold my breath, though. Cutting down a book (and a verse) as dense as Dune to a two hour movie will be a challenge for any writer.
I want some Foundation movies or a mini-series. Why couldn't the SciFi mini-series have been enough for another 10 years at least?

He also had an all woman army/guard. Which for some reason that point always sticks to me.
The acting in the Sci-Fi version was atroscious, but it did nail the story down.
BTW this post is also worth of a *cough*
