DVI & VGA Question

I installed a new video card for a friend last week and had bought him a DVI cable so that he could utiilize the improved quality with his LCD screen. However, his LCD is old, and it only has a VGA connection! Would he see any beneift to using the DVI-Out connection on the vid card, a DVI cable, an a DVI-VGA adapter to connect it to his LCD? Or does the VGA connection on the monitor act as a "weakest link" barrier to getting improved video?

Well, if the video card you bought him has the DVI-I connector, it integrates the analog signal, so using a DVI-to-VGA adapter will give him the analog signal, period. How well that will look depends entirely on his LCD monitor.

Yes, the only thing you're trying to decide is if you should carry the analog signal to the monitor via the DVI cable or the VGA cable. It's possible the DVI cable might do a better job, but I'd doubt it.

New vid card probably came with a DVI->VGA adapter, I'd use that with the existing VGA cable and call it a day... or perhaps draw his attention to a new LCD monitor on sale somewhere.

The analog signal will be the same quality from either connector. You just add cable complexity and cost if you convert from DVI to VGA instead of just plugging into the VGA directly.

Luckily, the GeForce card has both DVI and VGA ports, so he's currently using his old VGA cable and VGA connection.
