Quickie trip to Calgary
Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 - 4:17pm
Just learned I'm going to Calgary for a couple of days for a conference. I'm staying at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel. Looks like it's right downtown, on 9th Ave. . I'll be in the conference for most of the trip, but I've got some time to kill Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. I won't have a rental car.
Can anyone recommend any nearby bars or restaurants or sights to check out?
We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.

Murph's is a damn good pub, down the street on 8th ave and 6th st., I think. By the Uptown Theatre. Which you can google for.
There's also Vicious Circle, which I've heard is good.
In fact, I can walk to both. Woo, downtown living.
Edit:
Don't go to an internet café. You can do that at home. Go and get drunk with a bunch of northern cowboys, it's much more entertaining.

Just remember that the city is split into 4 quadrants so there is 4 of every address. God I hate that town.

Switchbox is not your ordinary "internet cafe". But, point taken, Calgary night life is pretty awesome. There's a lot of great folks down there. You won't hear that coming from too many Edmontonians!

I have been in Edmonton for almost five years and never made the trip to Calgary. Its on my short list of places to check out this summer.
I hear you can see the mountains from the city.
Calgary does have that beautiful mountain scape in the distance.
Should you find yourself in Edmonton, come visit me at Absolute Power! I'll buy you a coffee. OK,...I'm done plugging now!

Is Cowboys still there? You could definitely check out the...ummm..."sights" there
If there's a hockey game on, definitely go find a bar to watch it at.

Same here. I've only been once but I have very little nice to say about it.

My friend used to frequent Cowboys whenever she went. It closed down about 2 years ago.

If it's this weekend, then you could checkout the Juno Awards.
That can be annoying.. but not as annoying as trying to cross the river in Edmonton. My gods, does no one there have a single point in Correct City Planning?
And you all are slandering my home

Was Calgary founded by Mormons? Why is it in quadrants?

Well they figure if having one of something is good, having 4 or it would be even more awesome.
Oh and they've seemingly run out of addresses with the standard street/avenue structure so all the newer parts of town have addresses like "151 Amber Crescent". Well excuse me but how the hell do I know where Amber Crescent is!?
Stupid Calgary *grumble grumble*
