Where the hell did this whole "Rick roll" fad come from?
I guess the internet needs something to replace "LOLcatz," but I just don't get how lame crap like this spreads around.

I haven't noticed a sudden spike of Rick Rolls here but I've definitely been KKD'd a hell of a lot more.
Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

No, I'm not saying it's been going on here at GWJ. I've just started sudden (over the last few weeks) seen people constantly using the phrase, and more and more links on sites going to these videos ((I think seeing the "look at Lala from tikibar take a shower!" thing making it to the front page of Digg today is both sad (people thinking they're going to see some boobage) and lame at the same time)).
I dunno. My point in bringing this up is just amazement at how really stupid crap seems to come out of nowhere and then become everywhere (lolcats, the whole Chuck Norris thing, ORLY, etc.) on the internet. There's gotta be a dissertation in there somewhere.

The best "Rick" gag I've seen was the episode of THE FAMILY GUY, where Peter and Brian travel back to Peter's past... a total parody of the scene from BTTF... "Hey Rick! It's your cousin Marvin... Marvin Astley?" Classic.

If you can explain Internet Memes, then you can explain everything. Most of the stuff you listed started either at 4chan or SomethingAwful, those two forums are responsible for pretty much 90% of your internet fads. Both places are, by their own definition, really stupid so, YMMV.

Aye, a lot of these internet memes start on SA or 4chan. The rick rolling in particular was a 4chan spawn, but SA is responsible for others. As far as them being stupid, it's like a really big high school. You just gotta find your cliche that you fit in ( Let's Play forum, yay! ). I'm sorry if my latest TF2 post spawned this thread. The most I try to do are just Youtube videos or such. If it bothers you guys, I'll put a halt to it. I just always get a good laugh out of it ( Like the Tiki Bar video on Digg, I believe most people just upvoted it for the fact that it was a REALLY good Rick Roll, since there was a pic of her up on the front page earlier this week. It was a big setup ).

I totally understand where you're coming from, but ultimately all we could do would be to have a window pop up when you open your browser that says:
"Welcome to the internet. Browse at your own risk".
It essentially all comes from your expectations. Your expectations of humanity and it's behavior on the internet is far too complementary. If you start browsing and expect lame crap at every turn, you can never be upset - you'll be constantly pleasantly reminded that your expectations are accurate. This is how i've learned to love the rickroll.
(PS - I still think lolcatz are funny. I am to the internet as Survivor viewers are to network television. /suicide)

Despite my initial tone in the OP, I'm more interested in the SPREAD of this stuff than annoyed by its use. I'm online a pretty good amount of time each day, and apparently this has been around since 2007... yet I've never come across it until recently. I suppose there might be some sort of Malcolm Gladwell-ian "tipping point" article to be made of these sorts of "internet phenomenon"... where it starts, how long it takes to propagate, how long until it starts being referenced by Jay Leno, etc.
