Did they improve the D-Pad with the newer DS Lite models? The two-tone models?

I've purchased a DS Phat to play Pokemon and Advance Wars, ostensibly. With an eye on Disgaea this summer. I'm not terribly fond of the D-Pad, though. Kind of uncomfortable. So today I tried out a friend's DS Lite and the D-Pad actually felt good. I was surprised. I remember hating the DS Lite D-Pad. Partially because of the size and partially because of the lack of place to grip the DS Lite. So the question is, does any have a newer DS Lite and can you comment on any differences in the D-Pad?

The difference is that your friend didn't sell his DS Lite and got the D-pad all nice and broken in.

Searching the intarwebs, there's been plenty of people who complained about D-pad performance (especially diagonals) only to find the problems gone after further breaking-in.

I did, but returned it. I really really want a modern system. I just prefer the DS currently. Mainly because of Pokemon/Advance Wars Days of Ruin.

But it was one of the two-color DS Lites. Those haven't been out for long, have they? I thought they were newish, thus he wouldn't have much chance to break it in.

They came out last August. I don't know when your friend bought one, but there's more than enough time in there to break a D-pad in.

Doh! That was a typo. I meant to say I don't prefer the PSP. I jumped in with the DS because I want something I can just toss in my backpack and something that can play Pokemon right now.

I just bought a two-toned DS Lite about three weeks ago and I really haven't had any noticeable troubles with the D-pad. I just get hand cramps because my hands are too damn big for the Lite.

Give a man a bag of gold and he'll complain about how heavy it is...

Yeah, my hands are too big for most controllers, period. The two most comfortable controllers I've ever used have been the XBox 360 and the original XBox. Who knew MS would be the one to get ergonomics so so right. I think 3rd on that list would be the GBA SP. I had absolutely no problems with that machine.

I picked up a DS Lite tonight. I can return the Phat to Gamestop within 7 days, so I'm now doing a side-by-side comparison of the two with regards to ergonomics. So far my opinion is that the Lite has the more comfortable D-Pad in so far as it's less clicky. On the other hand the Phat is more generous in size and thus easier to hold. But then it's harder to hold because it weighs more. I think the Lite will be what I stick with, but with the idea that this is something I won't play a whole lot. Just a game here and there with an eye on Disgaea this summer.

Oh, and FFTA2.

DS, maybe you should check out the Nyko charger/grip for the DS lite:

My hands are also too large for the DS Lite. When playing without the stylus (like MarioKart) I find the system much more comfortable this way. It does add a significant amount of weight, but the shape is a close approximation of a standard controller. When playing a stylus-heavy game (like Puzzle Quest), I take it off because the extra weight is a little too much for just one hand.
