Mod to play Planescape, Baldurs, Icewind series in High Resolution

Havent read about this in the forums. And I am using it now for PlanescapeTorment.

http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/

Quote:
The Widescreen Mod allows Planescape:Torment, Baldur's Gate: Tales of the sword Coast, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter and Icewind Dale II to be played at previously unsupported resolutions, like those of widescreen monitors. The project is currently an open beta, and only some engine variants are supported, those these will expand in future releases.

Any resolution is supported, provided that its X axis is greater or equal than 800 and the Y axis is greater or equal to 600 . Fullscreen works for any resolution supported by your graphic card, driver and screen. Otherwise, you can play the game windowed (except in TotSC and Ps:T, where you can't play the game windowed).

Sold! I recently purchased a widescreen laptop and this will be the perfect mod to exploit its assets.

Looks like it's time to bust out Planescape one more time.

Thanks for the link.

I've never played PS:T, and I never see it in stores. If I ever do find a copy, I hope it's not like Fallout, where I just gave up after an hour of each one, thinking "Oh, this must be one of those nostalgia recommendations."

You should really stick with Fallout. It starts extremely slow, making you kill rats and scorpions all by yourself with your crappy weapons (as old games tended to do). Once you get awesome weapons and go into battle with a gang at your back, though, the turn based strategy fighting is really awesome, and the great story and atmosphere start to really shine through.

I do seem to remember Planescape grabbing me more quickly out of the box, though. Probably because you start off as more of a badass right at the beginning.

Hmmm, p'raps I need to fire this one up again. I picked it up for its repuation and the fact that it will play on my laptop. But I rolled a heavily magic-oriented character, because folks said the key was to pick up as much of the memories and story as possible. I think I overdid it and gimped my character because I get my arse handed to me before I can pick up any real magic.

Any suggestions for rolling a character to get the most out of PS:T?

We all know that there is no quicker way to empty a joke of its peculiar magic than to try to explain it -- to point out, for example, that Lou Costello is mistaking the proper name "Who" for the interrogative pronoun "who," etc. - D.F.Wallace

You should give Fallout 2 a go beyond the initial hour ducki. The temple of trials was a last-minute addition because marketing demanded a tutorial, and it's really, really awful, and not indicative of the rest of the game's quality.

Thanks for the heads up, anyone! This is just the thing for my BG2 replay.

High wisdom/int/charisma really is the way to go. I like to get two of them up to 16 at least. The opening fights gan be a bit tough, but you *are* immortal, so if you get knocked down, you just get up again. And if you run away you regenerate. That, plus cunning use of Morte's Litany of Curses should see you through the opening fights.

Once you get into the hive, you can find Mebbeth (in Ragpicker's Square, iirc) to get started on the path to magic. Also find Porphiron, the follower of Erit-Agge, and do his quest to get training in the various weapon proficiencies before switching from the fighter class.

I'd be interested to hear how this looks. With 2D art you can't really scale it that well, so I would think you'd simply end up with all of the original art stretched across the screen. Sort of like stretching an 800x600 wallpaper to fill the screen.

I'd assume it scales it down and shows more of the background at a time.

It's pretty new, eh?, I remember that we had a little chat about mods in Planescape thread recently, and no one has brought this one up.

I wouldn't bother with classes, just because... tou don't have to. I've finished game as a warrior, without increasing STR or AGI. It's because I hate level grinding. Also, I decided to play a devil's advocate in there, and for one time try character with low physical and boosted mental attributes to talk my way out of troubles and use others to kill for me, rather than doing it myself.
It's the first RPG that surpassed my expectations in that matter. I've finished it without any trouble, not caring for character stats development and inventory even for a minute, putting almost all upgrades into CHR and WIS and still playing as a warrior.
Level grinding and building UBAR boosted characters was fun when I was... well, eleven? It's just that at some point all you want from game is compelling story/roleplaying and possibility not to bother with any stats. Planescape delivers.

Ummm, but why would you? Haven't you ever wondered that devs have been making titles that could simoultaneously run at widescreen and 4:3 resolutions, for a couple of years now, and those don't seem to be stretched? ;]

Yeah, this is the case. BG2 looks lovely at 1440x900 on my 22" widescreen.

He should give Fallout 1 a go beyond the initial hour - until he gets to Shady Sands, or, more importantly, Junktown.

Fallout 2 was rather juvenile, boring for a long initial stretch (far longer than the Temple of Trials), lost the post-apocalyptic atmosphere, direction, and world consistency. Bigger isn't always better, and F2 was direct proof of that.

Although this is true I still had a lot of fun with Fallout 2. I treat it like a sandbox game that I can pick up and do some stuff without worrying about the consequences.

Edit: The first time I played Fallout I got killed by giant mantises on my way to Shady Sands. The first time I played Fallout 2 I got killed by a small group of giant ants. Both events taught me to save often.

Oooh, nice find. The later Infinity Engine games supported pretty good resolutions, but the early games in particular would benefit from high-resolution support.

I would still like to go through and try co-op at some point. I did a little bit of IWD2 that way, but only got as far as the start of Chapter 2.

You know, I've had this thing bookmarked forever - it's the reason why I stopped playing BG on GameTap, and instead have been waiting until I could secure a normal copy that would allow for compatibility. Don't know why I never thought to post it...

Both Baldur's Gates and Icewind Dales, and Planescape, are all looming large on my pile of shame.

Excellent! Squinting at my old laptops screen trying to play PS:T was an absolute horror. Probably the reason I've never made it much past the hive every time. I always keep the fallouts and PS:T in my old laptops case, which is the computer I drag around with me when I'm not settled down somewhere.

Here's hoping this works on the old fellow.
