Recommend me a movie with resistance fighters
Thursday, March 27th, 2008 - 10:11pm
I need footage of resistance fighters and civilian militias, and want help brainstorming movies that can provide me with those images. Goodjer minds activate, and tell me what to watch! I'm mostly looking for roughly contemporary fare (Spartacus is too old). So far I'm looking at:
28 Days Later
Children of Men
12 Monkeys
Land of the Dead
Battlestar Galactica (Cylon occupation scenes)
I'd love to know if anyone can think of any films depicting some of the conflicts in Africa or South America over the last 50 years or so, preferably form the view points of the resistance or local fighters.

Starship Troopers.

"Dhelor + intarwebs = Great ideas." - wordsmythe
"Do I what I do: hate everyone." - Quintin_Stone
Latter episodes of the TV series Jericho might work.
But then I can't vouch for the authenticity in any of it.

"Never know when you might need a tank." -Johnston Green, Jericho
Blackhawk Down, but that's more US military with some scenes of "resistance"? Maybe Three Kings, but I don't remember if there was any resistance group in it, in that case you could also take Kelly's Heroes. The Running Man(Mr Spock, you have the comm..","who is Mr Spock?"), but that's not Africa, but neither is Total Recall. Those two do have resistance fighters, though. They Live, there is an African American guy beating the snot out of Roddy Piper. IMDB says there's a movie called Resistance, about resistance (literally!).
I don't think authenticity is a priority, 28 Days Later, 12 Monkeys, Land of the Dead don't seem to be!

Red Dawn
Damn, beat me too it!

My first thought on seeing the title.
How about BBC America's news program. Seem to be a lot of resistance fighters/militias shown there these days.
Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.
Blood Diamond depicts conflicts in Africa.
Terminator has scenes of resistance fighters. Of course, it's futuristic and they're fighting robots.
And then, Equilibrium has resistance fighters. Again, it's futuristic.

I came here just to post Red Dawn, too. I saw it pop up on Xbox Live Video Marketplace the other day and I just had to watch the trailer for it. Man, the 80's were a different time.

I recommend Dead Weekend it's pretty awesome. Plus it has an alien chick that turns into different women and has sex with Stephen Baldwin.

What kind of resistance fighters are you looking for? Good guerillas or bad guerillas? Old eras or modern? European or African or Middle-eastern? Hollywood-looking, or realistic? Black & white, or color? Guns, or bows and arrows?
The big question is does the footage have to include Patrick Swayze? Cause if so, you're going to be limited to Red Dawn.
A few episodes at the beginning of Season 6 of Deep Space Nine, during the Dominion occupation of DS9, and later on in Season 7, after Damar forms a Cardassian resistance to the Dominion. The season 7 episodes might be especially helpful, as there is a lot of explanation of how to run a series of resistance cells.

The granddaddy of them all and still used today at the Army War College as THE movie for entering the mindset of the resistance fighter is.....
Battaglia di Algeri, La (1966)
Everything else is pretty much just Hollywood romaticized claptrap.

The Great Escape has a scene at a cafe with the French resistance. That's all I got other than a scene in Africa from Monty Python's Meaning of Life. But I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Mostly semi-modern era, and ideally civilian militia or guerrilla type groups, from their point of view. I'm looking for inspiration about tactics, lifestyle, and mindset, as well as dramatic images and moments of revolution (think masked man throwing a Molotov cocktail, or an overloaded truck covered in AK-47 wielding Sandinistas).
Additionally, images of riots and civilian uprisings would be good, if anyone can think of movies featuring those.

If you are looking for realism, I can not think of a single movie I would recommend as highly as the one I mentioned above.
