STALKER question
Thursday, March 27th, 2008 - 11:07am
I picked up a copy of STALKER a while back but have been shying away from installing it since I heard it needs a lot of unofficial patching. Could someone give me some links to what I ought to install to get the most out of the game?

I ran Stalker of Steam with no problems.. dunno what people mean by unofficial patches?

No sure about that mod, Lobster. When it was first released I toyed with the idea of installing one of the overhaul mods that added more guns/ammo/armor to the vendors. I can't remember, but I think one of the official patches fixed some of the complaints.
The game is sort of like Oblivion, in that the vanilla version is good enough that you don't need mods to have it be a good game, but maybe someone else will know what you're talking about.
Anyone thinking about starting up a STALKER: Clear Sky thread?

There are quite a few mods out there to change what some viewed as deficiencies in game design: Quests that time out, gimped merchant inventories, crippling weight penalties. There probably were a few that fixed honest-to-god bugs, though I don't know which of these have been addressed by official patches.

I remember what seemed to be bugs in a few quests, but nothing major. Aside from those headaches, the only big issue to me was that you needed to frequently replace your gun but couldn't always find or buy the ammunition for a replacement. So I'd end up with 3 different guns, picking up every bit of ammo I saw to keep from running out. Even then, in one mission I was down to a pistol with a single clip.
The mod i installed added true darkness for the night time which really added to the environmental ambiance. It also got rid of the mission time-outs.... not that i really used those missions much.
[edit] I'll look up which mod it was that i installed as a lot of the mods made have overlap but some have (what i considered) unwanted effects on gameplay.

Do you happen to know the name of this mod?

I've played Stalker from start to end without mods and it works just fine. The weapons are a bit more lethal then in your average game which will put you through a reload and safe cycle at the end of the game. Aside from that I didn't notice anything that irked me so you can probebly do without any mods.
Cool, a new Stalker thread! I just started playing it last night, and I have a bug question, too. Should I pay any attention to the descriptions of places on my map? They seem to refer to quests which I haven't received. I've picked up a few info things from dead bodies, and taken quests from living people ("Got any work for me?") but the descriptions don't match the quests at all. Bug, or feature?

I had to switch from my laptop to my PC.
The mod i got was called the OLmod: Bolm's STALKER Mod (OLMod 1.3)
It turns out that it's a compilation mod (been a while since i played) and it probably has a new version available. I downloaded the mod after playing the game in its original state for about an hour... and never went back. It's really good.

I'll have to try some of the mods out. The thing that stopped my was the horrible weapons accuracy + never-ending enemy spawns. That and fact I'm such a little wussy I have to play with the lights on.
If it involves selling my first born children to get my hands on the game, I'm there. Looks amazing.

Speak of the devil, I just reinstalled this a few days ago and loaded up the Oblivion Lost mod. I love that the game runs like a champ now, and some of the changes seem good. However, Oblivion Lost makes the game much more difficult, with extra roving packs of dogs and mutants. I got absolutely crushed by a rampaging mutant within about 10 minutes of entering the game. I've uninstalled the mod, I'm going to go for something a little less invasive to tweak the annoyances out rather than overhaul everything.
Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles
The thing that made me stop was crash to desktop bugs. The incompatible saves after patch did not help.
Weapon accuracy was bad at first, but improved very quickly in the game. It wasn't really an issue by the time I left the first zone.
The side mission descriptions tended to suck bad. The map took a while to figure out as well, but mission locations made more sense when you figured it out.
Off the cuff, I remember installing a mod having to do with armor repair, as non-sucky armor was very scarce and non-repairable.
Maybe it's time to revisit Chernobyl ...
Float32 is by far the best mod you can get for Stalker. It makes the game look and run so much better. You do not want to do without it.
I am actually surprised because I also just recently re-installing this game and it seems many other people are doing the same. This game has the best atmosphere. The only other games made me feel like I was really there were Deus Ex and Bioshock.
Thanks for standin' still!

I ended up playing the game unpatched for a review. I loved it, but when I play through it again I'll be looking first and foremost for a patch that lowers the rate & frequency at which bandages need to be applied. Bleeding out all the time was really tiresome. Managing inventory weight was also a pain. Other than that, I'd be looking for bug & quest fixes and performance enhancements. Anything else would be gravy.

I did pick this one up when it first came out and Modd'ed the hell out of it with all sorts of fancy skins and weapons mods and got real bored real quick. I did start from scratch about a month back and run all the way to the end with no mods and LOVED it. It makes the game more challenging and gives you the added "WOW" effect of finding that harder to find weapon/armor not bought with mods fro any-Ol' trader. The one aspect of the game I truly hated was the armor durability decrease with damage and no way to repair. Many many very nice sets had to be trashed as time went on because of the decrease in stats and protection with loss in durability.

I don't mind the inventory yet, because I don't have any big items, but I definitely dislike the bleeding out. More radiation damage, less bleeding. I love radiation. I also need to get rid of the head bobbing. It's making me sick. This whole game is so perfectly tuned to my interests, but I can't play it for more than twenty minutes before I have to lie down and rest. Stupid, stupid head bob.

I personally played it vanilla, and loved it. Granted, I played a couple months after initial release, so it wasn't buggy, but I'll probably do the same with Clear Sky (but sooner).
Here's the Clear Sky thread.

This is the truth. Even if you don't want to mess with the mods that change gameplay aspects, FLoat32 is a must if you have a decent rig. The game looks a lot closer to more recent games with this on and for some reason gets better performance too. It's why I'm excited that the team/guy behind it is now making one for Crysis.

Does anyone have any experience with the mods and the latest 1.0006 patch? I've had this installed for months and haven't gotten around to playing it but was going to start with a couple of weather mods and the OLmod to take out the quest timers. From what I've been reading, almost every time they release a patch, most of the mods break and have to be updated which not all of them are. Anyone know if that's a big issue with the latest patch?

I'm only going to update to 1.0004 since it looks like that's the last patch that adds significant changes. I'm going to install Faiakes' Mod instead of OLmod since OL only seems to work with 1.0003 and 1.0004 adds some optimizations.
Someone needs to teach them how to name their versions. They're doing it wrong.

The version of OLmod that i use (1.3) is compatible with ver. 1.0004 - the last patch i installed.

OK, I got killed because I didn't know how to switch between throwing bolts and using my weapons and stuff.

Also, the headbob is making me nauseous. That's never happened from a game before.

Use the scroll wheel on the mouse or the number keys (1-3 I think) to change between bolts, sidearm and main weapon. And maybe don't sit so close to your computer monitor?
I don't know, I just sort of got used to it after a while. But yeah, early on I couldn't play for more than 20 minutes at a time before I would get sick.
That's really weird. When I had the bolt equipped I couldn't switch to anything else. When I had a gun equipped I could switch to my binoculars and knife, but not the bolt. It's like it existed in some parallel alternate inventory.

I'll have to try one or two of the mods, but w/ STALKER, some of the so-called "annoyances" end up being game play advances. The weapon accuracy and deterioration issues and the inventory capacity, for example, made it hard for me to learn how to play the game. I tried playing like I was an FPS action hero and was rewarded with a bullet ridden corpse. I had to learn how to be sneaky. I had to learn how to make hard choices about weapons. I had to learn how to manage my caches of goods.
Once I un-learned some of the video game standard behaviors and let STALKER teach me how to survive in the Zone, the game really blossomed. It is, sadly, flawed with a bunch of bugs. Still, I'd caution against neutering the power of the game by "fixing" things that aren't broken. Well, you should play the way that is most rewarding for you but after playing the COD 4 Chernobyl and Pripyat levels, I realized even more strongly what a triumph STALKER's gameplay was. It was just so much more fun to play STALKER in those levels, while COD felt so gamey and arcade simlated.
We all know that there is no quicker way to empty a joke of its peculiar magic than to try to explain it -- to point out, for example, that Lou Costello is mistaking the proper name "Who" for the interrogative pronoun "who," etc. - D.F.Wallace
Yay, I literally just beat Stalker like 5 minutes ago. I got stuck in freaking Chernobyl, right at the wierd dogleg around the chainlink fence and through the hole in the wall bit and hadn't touched it in 2 weeks cause I was so frustrated. I only started it up to test my new monitor.
I haven't used any of the mods, but a friend of mine kept bugging me to install Float32. I wasn't having any problems with the regular patches. It only crased to desktop like one time, so I didn't want to take the chance of losing my saved games. I'm thinking now that I've beaten the vanilla version it's time to install some of the mods.
I am having a hell of a time figuring out which mods works with which patch and which ones interfere with other ones. Ye gads. All I really want is a higher weight limit, a smaller reticle, some weapon accuracy tweaks and a slightly more realistic damage model.
