Digsby Released!
I am currently loving Digsby
It's probably one of the best IM clients I've used, it's like all the good features of Pidgin and Adium X combined into one awesome package.
Instant Messaging* One combined buddy list for all your AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, and Jabber Accounts.
* Manage multiple conversations with tabbed conversation windows. You can drag tabs out into their own windows for important conversations.
* Rename contacts with an alias so you don't have to remember buddy names like 'giantsfan123'.
* If one of your friends has more than one IM account you can combine them into a single merged contact to eliminate duplicate buddies.
* Send your friends SMS messages right from the IM window.
* The InfoBox lets you check everyone's status message and profile just by moving your mouse down the list.
* Changing your status has never been easier. just one click right on the buddy list!
* Multitask while you chat. Minimize the IM window and you see popups of new IM's. Best of all, you can reply right from the popup and get back to what you were doing.
* Log conversation history and find the information you need our search-enabled log viewer.
* And so much more.* Manage your Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail, IMAP, and POP accounts right from digsby.
* Get popup notifications when new email arrives. Clicking a popup takes you right to the message with auto-login into webmail accounts.
* The email InfoBox gives you a snapshot of your unread messages with just one click
* Perform actions such as "Mark as Read" or "Report Spam" right from the email InfoBox.
* Send emails to your friends right from the IM window. The email is sent directly from any account digsby is tracking for you.Social Networking
* Stay up to date with everything happening on your Facebook or MySpace account (other network support coming soon).
* Receive alerts of events such as new friend requests, messages, group invites, etc.
* The social network InfoBox gives you a real time NewsFeed of what your friends are up to. Everything from new photos, to status updates, to upcoming birthdays is just a click away.Personalize
* Customize digsby with application skins to give it a personal look and feel.
* Change the way your conversations look with themes – everything from simple AIM-style windows to 3D conversation bubbles.
* Complete control over the layout of buddies on the buddy list. Change everything from buddy icon size to whether or not to show a snippet of their away message.
* Sort your buddy list how ever you want! You can organize buddies manually, by status, by service, by name or by log size to place those you communicate with most at the top. You can even choose a secondary sorting method.
* Customizable notification system lets you choose what events you want to be alerted about and how.Other
* Digsby offers complete synchronization between computers and installations. Everything from the skin you chose to your pre-defined status messages follows you from place to place.
* You can place a widget on your blog, website, or social network profile so you can chat with visitors right from digsby.
* Manage multiple simultaneous file transfers from one simple transfer manager.

am giving it a try right now, and liking it so far.
The only thing I have against IM is that ppl start
talking right away. But I guess that's why you turn
it on or not lol

So you turn on all the bells and whistles, decide it's too busy, then uninstall it? That's kinda like turning on every radio and TV in the house then deciding you'd better move.

I tried it and it looks well made, but I just feel more comfortable with miranda at the moment, I kinda like messing with all the available plugins ![]()
will keep an eye on it though

Well, close. I didn't uninstall it. Otherwise, yeah.

Thanks for the heads-up Pyroman. I currently use Pidgin on my N810 and it does the job rather well for a portable client, however, my laptop is running Trillian which is very long in the tooth at this point. I've been holding out for Trillian Astra but apparently that'll be out by the time the sun dies. I've tried Miranda, which is good, but kind of the Foobar2K of IM clients, i.e. infinitely customizable and needlessly complicated. Hopefully Vista will play nice with this beta. ![]()
I tried to use it, but the installer gives me a BSOD. Then when I reboot it looks like the program installed anyway but it doesn't run.

How does it compare to trillian? Does it have iRC built in?

I switched from Trillian to Digsby and I'm not going back. I was even able to get rid of witty since this now handles twitter! Memory usage is high (91.5Mb) but they haven't even optimized the app yet.

I used a pre-release version, and didn't really see anything as a must-have for replacing Pidgin.
But if someone writes Pertelian support for it, we'll see.

Ohh IM is sooo 90's!!1
I quit IM long ago because I got fed up with that crap
But if this Digsby has a small enough foot print I might use it, but Steam and xfire cover everything I need now

Whaa? If I didn't have IM, I'd hate my life. You've made my heart cry emo tears, dude.
Just installed Digsby on the work laptop of infinite sadness. Not too shabby. Don't know if I'd want to replace Adium on my Mac, though. Facebook and Twitter integration is going to be dangerous for me.

It's rather convoluted but it's not a measurement of how much memory your app is taking away from other applications, especially if it's .NET.

Ooh, that would be pretty nice. Something to keep an eye out for. Thanks, man!

I JUST switch from trillian to pidgin this week... I was tired of having to load trillian AND Gtalk at the same time (I couldn't figure out how to use trillian to connect to jabber, but I might have just been missing something).
Is it worth ditching pidgin for this?

I jumped ship from Pidgin and swam over to the Digsby boat a few days ago. Pidgin was working decently well but I'd have a crash once a week or so. If only Digsby would come out with a SIP/LCS plugin I'd be super happy. The Trillian LCS plugin (or just Trillian) is buggy.

I've used both this and Pidgin, and for some reason I prefer Pidgin. Maybe because it's "cleaner" and doesn't feel so bloated. I like there this is going though, and who knows it might win me over after enough usage.
So Digsby is .NET on the windows platform? Nice.

I switched back to Pidgin today.
Digsby is an excellent concept that I'm not ready to subscribe to. One app for messaging, email, social networking, blending and pureeing is a great idea. It might even be the future. But all that sh*t popping out at me at once was freaking me out.
At this point, I need these services to be separate so I can filter them out. I've already fallen off the GTD wagon lately at work, but finding out that Lunabean poked me on Facebook, Edwin tweeted about getting too much "exercise" on Twitter and iTunes spammed my Gmail account - all while trying to decypher what my boss is talking about in an MSN chat - is too much input. Nevermind that I don't have the patience to update all those services at once right now.
My Pidgin setup at work is fantastically simple, paired down to essentials. I'm not running on 30 different protocols here and I'm not loading a ton of addons to make it look and feel like iChat or something. I need one window with tabs that I can switch between, to tell all my co-workers, supervisors, and employees that they need to leave me alone so I can refresh Digg.
Maybe I'm just set in my ways, but I think my brain might need to be slightly re-wired to make Digsby work in my life. Once the Mac-native app comes out, I might give it another shot.
EDIT - "what" not "why"

Switch Task Manager's columns to show Virtual Memory-- that's a more accurate view of mem usage than the regular Mem Usage column. I open that up every time I use ZBrush so I can see where all 4Gb of my RAM are going
Maybe I don't have enough going on that it's overwhelming, but it's really nice to have the facebook and gmail integration for me so I can keep up with it. Even without that though, I say it's a better IM client than Pidgin.

Just turn off the pop up alerts in the preferences and check whenever you feel like it. Or you can just alter the alerts to only show certain things.
