I have to say, I watched a movie streamed through my PS3 from one room in the house to the other last night. Just happened to be wide awake in bed with the headphones. The fact that I could turn the PS3 on, watch the movie, then turn it off, all from bed was pretty cool. The ps3 is first and foremost a media machine in my house, and that's just fine.

Amen. It's quiet, and mighty versatile now. Unfortunate that the new 2.2 firmware appears to break long video file playback for me, although it also fixed the problem of playing certain DIVX codecs. Still, it's the bomb-diggity.

Nice! With this update, Blu-ray discs now have the same functionality that HD-DVDs had at launch.

But seriously, I agree with the consensus. Even if I never play another game outside Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank due to my other systems presenting too much competition, I'm still happy with my purchase. Whisper quiet, well-designed hardware, fantastic as a blu-ray player and as a DVD upscaler, and now subtitle support for DivX files. Heck, even the upscaling it does for PS2 games is pretty impressive. Plus, I find it insane that it was and is easier for my PS3 to connect with my Windows-based PC than the 360.

How so? The reason I ask is because I notice some issues few days ago with viewing couple of the movies I had on my PS3.

Am I reading this right? Are they allowing you to burn Blu-Ray discs? Or maybe just read BD-Rs recorded using that method?

No, it's just bad formatting. It should look like this:

Strange thing. I had the reverse problem. Every time I tried to stream a Divx from my computer using WMP11 sharing, I had many connectivity problems, so all I use now is the 360 for that and it works great.

That was a while back though, I'm not sure what Firmware version I was using. I will definitely give it a try tonight one more time.

Before the update, I could play my 2 hour movies ripped into mp4, now every one I've tried has stuttering every 2-3 seconds. Before the update, many of my short (< 1 hour) DIVX files were seen by the PS3 as corrupted, those files now play fine.

I haven't tested the patch yet but plan to when I get home.

I've had major issues with streaming Divx to both the 360 and PS3 via WMP11/Vista the past few months.

- Files are "Corrupted" but they play fine on the PC. However, when I turn off the system, reboot the PC, or simply try 15 minutes later and they play fine. Sometimes they work on the 360, sometimes they work on the PS3, and vice versa. The swapping back and forth just to play content has become tiring.

- Files get the "stutter" and "audio skips" before completely crashing on both 360 and PS3. this again is random, as the same file will play fine at times.

- No heavy multitasking on the PC when this happens, also no insane network traffic. Hard to pinpoint.

Hopefully this does fix a bunch of this..

Sigh, I guess I might have a different issue. When I play a movie it would tent to skip about 4-10 min ahead every few min. It wouldn't really stutter, the transition is smooth. However, at certain point, it would stop the skip and restart the movie. At that point it seemed like it was playing fine but I didn't let it run long enough to say for sure. Just to note, I also have them in mp4, 2GB file.

I just remembered that my PS3 is using Wi-Fi and my 360 is hardwired. I'll have to do some tests tonight because that may be the solution for my problems on the PS3.

It sounds like your PC may have a problem. Have you ran a diskcheck or memtest lately? I've experienced very good wireless performance streaming from Vista to the 360.

I'm streaming directly from a NAS device running on *nix. I am doing it over the PS3 wireless, though, i'll try the wired connection tonight to see if it makes any difference in playing back the 2Gb files.

FYI, I've been reliably streaming to both 360 and PS3 via Vista/WMP11.

Just to throw my two cents in:

I have been using both WMP11 and WMC to stream to the 360 from Vista via wired network successfully.

I have also been using WMP11 to stream to the PS3 via wired successfully.

I haven't tried any divx files greater than 2 gig yet though on the PS3 side. I'll give that a shot tonight.

I just use Tversity, works AWESOME for everything. I'm not having it doing any transcoding though. I went through and re-ripped everything to a PS3 profile in either Nero or DVDFab Platinum.

There are lots of solutions that will be a DLNA server, I just think there's is easier than using WMP or something.

Sigh... 2.20 didn't fix anything. The video still skips few times and then resets. As if it can't buffer it quick enough. Hmm, I wonder if I pause it at the start and let sit for few min and then start playing.

I doubt it will make any difference. I've also tried viewing the files from USB device and PS3's HD, with end result being the same.

I'm not sure if I got it figured out yet, but I tried Tversity again on Rabbit's suggestion. I tried two methods.

I chose to convert it all with Tversity. The shows that didn't play before did. The shows that DID play before DIDN'T. I thought that was very weird. Also, like I expected, the Tversity conversion softened the picture up way too much. Even after adjusting the resolution and every option possible. I guess I could play with ffdshow filters and what not but I didn't feel like investing even more time into it.

So I turned off the conversion in Tversity and just used it for sharing. The shows that worked before did. The shows that didn't work before, didn't. I even tried creating a separate tag/folder for the shows that were culprit, and applying conversion only to them (best of both worlds) but for some reason that made the old shows NOT work again.

So I went back to WMP11 sharing and realized that both the 360 and PS3 are very finnicky with the type of codec being used. Standard Divx/Xvid with no tricks, no funny business. I was hoping for the glory days of XBMC on my modified Xbox, but I guess I'll put up with what I got to work with (or try to do mass batch conversions... ugh)

Still, can't complain too much, the stuff that does work is lovely, and having Divx in the living room again is wicked.
