Goodjer Artists, Where you at? [NSF56k]
Monday, March 24th, 2008 - 9:46pm
So I was thinking. The Goodjer community is fairly large, we must have a fair number of creative types among us. I know I've seen a couple people post photography in other threads, but I'd like to see all of it in one place, and maybe add some other stuff.
I'm thinkin a thread for us to post our work, maybe get some critique from others would be pretty fun.
I'm not trying to whore our my work or anything, though I would appreciate comments. I mostly want to see what my fellow creatives are up to when feeling...i dunno, creative. Paintings, Drawings, Photography, 3D stuff, Videos, whatever.
Obviously, keep to the CoC.
P.S.- That LOLCat you made, funny though it may be, does not constitute art. Sorry.

Since it was my idea, I'll go ahead and start us off.
Here's a couple of things I've been working on, in various stages of incompletion.

Hmm, do you really want feedback? Not saying that you're work is bad, or anything, I can just be particularly brutal when it comes to feedback. I'm a director at a large art school, so this is my bread and butter!

Rob, some of that looks like the older Magic the Gathering card art. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.
And by art, would you include photography? If so...

It's not much. At all. But it's there. I'll have to update it soon. I have pictures laying around that I need to work on.

Wow Rob thats some sweet stuff. I love the shading on the robot, and all of that last black and white image. Very very cool.
I've never been too good with the illustrative stuff, but when I have excellent source material I can do some decent 3d modeling. My work is all at www.3dchisel.com
I went to school for art but I've mostly settled into roles in QA, getting into QA lead and potentially management down the line.

My girlfriend always amazes me with the stuff she comes up with; often it's inspired by a game I'm playing, so I feel at least a little bit responsibile. ^.^ Here's some stuff she did after getting 'into' the characters of Fran and Balthier after watching me play Final Fantasy XII for about two hundred million hours:
If you like it, you can see more of her stuff: http://razimo.deviantart.com/gallery/
And then... here's my stuff. It's usually nothing more than stuff I doodle while on calls at work. Nevertheless, my girlfriend says she intends to someday arrange all 500+ post-it-notes into a big tapestry and make a wallpaper pattern out of it someday. Sounds overly-generous to me, since to me it looks like stuff a six-year old would be embarassed about. Oh well, here's a sample of 4 squares:

Might as well throw my latest piece up here: Lady Leia, Princess of Alderaan from my Steampunk Star Wars series.
I keep the rest of my art over at my portfolio: http://www.whereismyeyeball.com
I've also got a blog I post my new work, as well as sketches and whatnot, on.
Rob: I'd say the robot is your strongest piece here (it's got a charming design, and a nice action pose), followed by the spiky demon painting (a cool design, original and creepy). Your characters are generally nice and dynamic, but anatomy is definitely something you need to focus on to bring your character work to the next level. Another thing to watch with your characters is that none of them are planted on the ground. It's fine to draw a jumping character, as long as you're not doing it to avoid drawing a standing one. Creating a relationship between a character and the ground is tougher than one would think, but is pretty important. Unless you're drawing a comic book in the 90's. I don't think any superhero touched the ground for that entire decade.
Anyway, overall you seem to be on the right track. Hope this critique was helpful!
My webhost has crapped my site away so here`s some stuff I got on photobucket.

Should, perhaps, a 56k warning be put on this thread? Not that I've known anyone actually using a 56k in the last six years or so, but still... seems polite.
Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.

Wow! I checked out everyone's websites and I'm really blown away by the level of talent here. I have no experience with digital art and I'm really starting to wish that I did. I have to take a digital art class for school, but that won't be for a few years, so I'm thinking about trying to teach myself to use Photoshop and Illustrator. Does anyone know if there are any great books out there to help me? And is there a specific kind of tablet that is better than the rest? I'm pretty much clueless about digital art, so if anyone has any tips for me, that would be great!
I'm working on my MFA degree online through the Academy of Art University right now, and I'm really loving it. The first drawing is something that I did for school last semester and everything else is a little older. The last two are silkscreen prints that I did while I was working on my undergraduate degree. I fell in love with screen printing a few years ago, and I'm really starting to miss having access to the printmaking studio here. I would build my own studio, but it's super expensive!
Anyway, you can see more of my work at http://jessiechrist.deviantart.com/gallery/, but some of the stuff there is embarrassingly old and I haven't put up any of my most recent school work yet.
Some day I'll have something real to show, but so far everything I've done is for work and I can't really share it. I'm hoping to have the beginnings of a decent short animation finished within the next month to show off to everyone in the world and go, "I MADE ALL OF THAT YOU BUY NOW!!!"

I have no problem with constructive crit. I don't like people that are negative without some sort of explanation. "Thats sucks" does not go over well with me, and I enjoy basking in the adulation of other just as much as the next person, but "Thats pretty" doesn't help me much either. Anyways, I really just wanted to see what some of the other people around here were up to.
So, yes. Critique welcome, but only if you want to.
@0kelvin
Okay, Steampunk+StarWars. I'm in love. My two most favoritest things in the world. I love you.
Seriously, well done on the whole site. You have a lot of stuff going on in your work, but it doesn't look cluttered. And your fine details are excellent. I loved all the little cogs in the one of Vader.
I don't think I had been consciously avoiding feet. The steambot guy is actually supposed to be sliding down a hill of rubble, I just hadn't got around to putting in the ground yet. It make cefect pence in my head, I just get easily distracted and lose interest before I finish anything.

Eric, I stumbled over a link to your blog some time ago on RPG.net. Wonderful idea, very well executed. Also, your blog has the quite likely coolest name ever.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
About the only thing I've been doing lately that's anywhere near the realm of art are these little decal stickers I've been making for my GH3 Les Paul. I make one every month or so and stick it on the face. They've become almost therapeutic to make as it usually only takes a couple hours to go from concept to sticker, and they liven up the big black monolith look of the controller a bit. I'm hoping to have it filled soon.

@ Aramina:
Awesome work. I wish I had the level of dedication to keep practicing my traditional artwork. Anyway, for digital art, I would suggest the Wacom Intuos3 graphics tablet. Since you are more into traditional work, and if you can afford it, maybe try the new Cintiq (sp?) by Wacom-- it's a monitor that you draw directly onto with a stylus, basically like a graphics tablet. Good stuff, and a lot of fun.
Also, try getting a Print Gocco for screen printing. I used one for my wedding invitations (pictures of them coming soon) with good results. It is a lot smaller than a traditional screen printer, and a lot simpler, but you can produce some wicked stuff if you really try. Since your at the AAU too (I'm graduating in May!), go to Arch on Missouri & 17th Street-- they have Goccos there, you should check it out.
@0kelvin:
Dude, your steampunk Star Wars stuff is friggin' awesome. I was checking that out a while ago when searching for steampunk reference for an old website design I had done last year.
@ Most:
Your stuff is cool beans too. I would suggest getting into sharper detail, as your work looks very loose (which isn't bad). I should heed my own advice though... I need more detail/less-cartoony work in my portfolio as well.
@ Rob_Anybody:
Seph will definitely give you some good criticism. He's the co-director of the Animation/VFX department (is that the right title?) & Games Lead at the Academy of Art, so it's his job to criticize people's work

Some really great stuff here! I especially like the Steampunk Starwars stuff - didn't know it was a Goodjer who had done those as i'd previously seen them featured on another site such as Kotaku.
Here's a few things i did literally 7 years ago... a bit embarassing really and i should get back to drawing again once i have more time.

I've spent many years doing paint jobs on race cars for the various games I play, and for the longest time I only used Paint Shop Pro. After being brow-beaten enough times to ditch PSP and learn Photoshop, I found: http://www.lynda.com
They have a wonderful team of instructors. I took one of their basic lessons on Photoshop which consisted of 3 CD's and a weekend spent watching and doing. They include files in the disks that allow you to work along with the instructor and do what he/she is doing at the same time. I won't say that after that weekend I was a pro, but now, I can easily move around in Photoshop and really understand what needs to be done in order to achieve the desired outcome. There are more advanced tutorials you can get as well, but as limited as my artistic needs were, I never felt it necessary to do more.
Hope this helps.

Hey, I posted a picture of a plastic guitar. If you like it then don't be afraid to show someone. Just because someone is better at something doesn't lessen you're own expression.

@Aramina, the Cintiq is probably the way to go. And apparently don't get the small one as you can get a used big one on ebay for not much more.
Also, look into Painter instead of Photoshop. Its probably more in line with what you want as it is solely a digital paint app.
@Rob - There was an exercise I did in figure drawing where we were supposed to take a master's work, copy it and then layer tracing paper on top of the drawing. While looking at a hanging plastic skeleton for reference, on the tracing paper we were supposed to insert a skeleton into the figures in the drawing underneath. It was to check the masters to see if their subjects were anatomically correct or if they used models for reference.
You've undeniably got talent. I think working on your anatomy or some skeleton studies would push your work over the top.
